Former DEEP PURPLE Guitarist RITCHIE BLACKMORE 'Couldn't Care Less' About ROCK HALL Induction - Oct. 11, 2012
DEEP PURPLE is among 15 finalists for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame's Class Of 2013.

"Personally, I couldn't care less," former PURPLE guitarist Ritchie Blackmore tells Billboard.com. "I would never go. I'm not really a fan of that stuff. Considering some of the people that are in the Hall Of Fame, I'm not sure if it's a good idea, so I don't care one way or the other, actually."

He adds, "I think our fans seem to care more than I do. They're always saying, 'You should be in the Hall Of Fame. You should be in this, you should be in that...' If I can pay the bills, that's all I care about."

For the first time, the public gets to vote alongside the artists, historians and music industry insiders of the Rock Hall voting body. From now until December 5, fans can vote on RollingStone.com for the nominees they'd like to see inducted. The top five acts will comprise a "fan's ballot" that will count as one of the more than 600 ballots that determine the Class Of 2013. The results will be announced in mid-December.

The April 18, 2013 event is set for Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, marking the first time the ceremony will be held in the city since 1993. HBO will tape the show for broadcast at a later date.

Artists are considered for inclusion in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 25 years after the release of their first recording.

Speaking to VintageRock.com, DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan recently stated about the possibility of one day being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, "You've got to take this with great respect. We don't have anything like that where we come from, over in Europe or anywhere else. It's an American thing. It's so completely different. In America, you're great and really do support and show appreciation for your artists, musicians, film stars, whatever it may be. And you give them visible signs in accolades and all that sort of thing. And you cheer and…you're very supportive. It's the completely opposite in the U.K. They want to kill you. [laughs] The moment you get up to any form of success, they just want to wipe you out and deride you. It's part of the culture. At the same time, we've just focused on the music."

He added, "I honestly can't tell you whether or not we should be there or not. It could be because of the fragmented nature of the band that they wouldn't know how to deal with it.

"To us, with the greatest respect, it doesn't mean a lot although it's rather like an award in the U.K., if I were to get one. I probably wouldn't accept it. But then again, after a week of thinking about it, I would accept it because it would be on behalf on the family and friends and everyone who supports the band and who's looked after us after all these years. It's kind of a recognition of everyone. But whether we deserve it, I don't know. I always get embarrassed talking about this stuff."

Former PURPLE member Glenn Hughes recently said of the Hall Of Fame: "We know the people in charge and we know how they think. It's become like a joke in a way. Gene Simmons [KISS] will talk to me about it, and go on a rant and all, and he is exactly right. But I'm not gonna hold my breath. DEEP PURPLE, KISS, YES and especially RUSH should obviously all be in."

I agree with Ritchie.

Doesn't this mean that Joe Lynn Turner gets in to the HOF too?

He's his own worst critic so if everyone says he's great he cringes. Both Allan Holdsworth and Jeff Beck are the same way. It would be more important if he were less successful but he is not hurting for cash. He has never liked the fashionable aspect of the music industry. This guy had done it all and seem most of it by the time he was 20.

"'Considering some of the people that are in the Hall of Fame'"

Yep, that phrase sumarizes pretty good the kind of double standard that rules RARHOF. Besides, his work as guitar player speaks for itself. Jeez, just to think that Deep Purple's name (along other great ones) may be stamped among LL Cool J's just makes me cringe; sacrilege.

I love what RB says. That's fucking cool. I think any rock artist worth a damn should tell the RRHoF to stick it up their collective asses. Please Rush, tell them to stick it. Show them Canadians aren't always polite! Put Milli Vanilla and Kelly Clarkson in that fucker instead! FOR FUCK SAKE!

Tony Carey is who you're thinking of.

I don't think it really matters unless the bands think it matters. In general I take a dim view of the RRHOF but you know for people like the Stooges who didn't get the love the first time they were in existence it might mean a lot.

I was happy to see the G&R pseudo reunion but that's an exception to the rule.

Why can't it just be about celebrating a band and getting them to reunite and have a good time?

SO many great reunions and performances at these shows, I wouldn't give that up just because some bands havent gotten a nod yet, or because it's all bullshit behind the scenes. Who cares?

Just shutup and play your guitar with your old friends at this one stupid gig and then go back to your fuckin castle.

There's no really good way to objectively gauge music the way you can football, baseball, etc. As a respecter of all genres, I'd just prefer a more basic Music Hall Of Fame or nothing at all. There are too many bands that are hugely influential that I despise yet I would agree to place in simply by respecting their place in the music pantheon regardless of personal taste.

There isn't a hall of fame that can hold Blackmore. Blackmore is one of the few and far between in rock: a real musician. Hell, some guitarist today still don't even know their fretboard. They're literally pattern players with absolutely no theory knowledge. Is it mandatory for good rock? Nope. But that's what elevates Blackmore above the average. A lifetime of virtuosity that fit into the 'mold' of rock. A great player that sold records. Deep Purple is not only hugely underrated but completely ignored by the younger rockers today. Purple is a lesson in heavy, guitar music. Purple should be mandatory listening in History of R&R college courses.

And goddamn right, Ritchie. Balls to shrug off this 'institution'. RAP IS NOT ROCK AND ROLL, PERIOD.

STARGAZER. PERIOD. IF YOU KIDS DON'T KNOW IT, LEARN IT.

I love the way he doesn't give a fuck, he's one of the best, and fucking wails with great tone and style when he wants to. But you can tell he's had it with rock and roll. He's to busy dressing up like Sir Lancelot from Monty Python and The Holy grail and banging that hot wife of his. He knows where his bread is buttered.

Nope. I teach music, and 17-year-old kids couldn't give less of a shit about yesterday's heroes like Deep Purple if they tried. In order to inspire a young hopeful through the music of an established band you have to give them something they can relate to. Deep Purple is their dads' music.

There are many insanely brilliant musicians in this world that either never caught a break or were just unlucky. I heard an awesome interview from the late Tommy Bolan. The interviewer asked Tommy what it was like playing with the great musicians in Deep Purple? He said it was great but added in every major city in the worls there are a handful of guys who can play as good as anyone. He then rattled off about ten jazz musicians. It was profound. In the case of Mr. Blackmore, he is indeed one of my all time idols. Not making comparisons to the likes of Beck and Page, BUT I think after Jimmy Hebdrix, Ritchie was the next in the line of influential hard rock/ metal guitarists...followed by Edward Van Halen. Blackmore = genius. If he wasn't such a prick to the press, they would worship the ground he walks on.

Ritchie and/or the guys in Rush should buy a full page's worth of advertising space in Rolling Stone or some other major music rag and have published in it an open letter to the RnR Hall of Shame, telling them to fuck off an die, and the reasons why.

Say what you will about Eddie Trunk, but he is right in stating that even when the Hall of Shame finally relents and decides to nominate one of these legendary bands, it's still disrespectful because they nominated them so much later than they should have.
