DEATH: 'Spiritual Healing' Deluxe Reissue Due In November - Oct. 9, 2012
The next chapter in Relapse's DEATH reissue campaign is the landmark, genre-defining album "Spiritual Healing".

Originally released in 1990, "Spiritual Healing" marked a new turn in the DEATH discography, one which ushered in cleaner production, a new level of boundary pushing musicianship and songwriting skills that were previously unimaginable from a metal band. "Spiritual Healing" sets the standard for riffs, insane time changes and of course mainman Chuck Schuldiner's masterful guitar solos. Now reissued as a double CD housed in super deluxe packaging featuring brand new liner notes from DEATH players James Murphy and Terry Butler, Chuck's sister Beth Schuldiner and VOLBEAT frontman Michael Poulsen, Disc 1 features a completely new remaster of the original album and Disc 2 contains 16 previously unreleased rehearsal, outtakes and studio instrumentals.

In addition to the 2-disc edition, limited-edition (2000 machine-numbered copies) triple CD digipak will be available exclusively from Relapse.com. The third CD features a never-before-released live set recorded in 1990 featuring the "Spiritual Healing" DEATH lineup. An iTunes deluxe edition will also be released containing five additional previously unreleased pre-"Human" rehearsal tracks not available on either of the CD versions.

"Spiritual Healing" will be released on November 20 in North America, November 23 in Benelux, Germany and Finland, and November 26 in the rest of the world.

"Spiritual Healing" follows the recent Relapse Records reissues of DEATH classics "Individual Thought Patterns", "The Sound of Perseverance", "Human" and the live collection "Vivus!" plus Chuck Schuldiner projects MANTAS and CONTROL DENIED. Like those reissues, this collection will contain extensive liner notes from previous members and never-before-seen photos of the band.

Pre-order options, including a new line of exclusive DEATH merch and a super limited die-hard fan pack containing an exclusive shirt design, poster flag, and patch, pin, guitar pick, sticker set can be found at this location.

"Remastered" means that this album will be only MUCH more loud - compressed as fuck, thats it! I have no doubts. Don't expect any better sound from this shitty cash-grab remasters.

You're wrong, wrong, wrong. A) this isn't a cash grab - the album has been out of print for years. Instead of a shitty bullshit knockoff of the original, $12 gets you a fully remastered (from the original master) disc with a 28 page booklet and TWO DISCS. That's a cash grab? Go tickle your mother's armpits ;) B) the remaster is hardly overly compressed or limited - instead, it is a killer enhancement of the frequencies for an awesome aural experience in 2012. But then, Godfleshh, you're NOBODY, so your thoughts on the subject are of no consequence. Let's face facts: you've never heard the remastering of Spiritual Healing. You've never seen the booklet for the reissue of Spiritual Healing. You're not connected to DEATH in any way. You're not connected to relapse Records in any way. So, essentially, you're speaking out of your ass. ERIC GREIF

Although their all time best was and always will be Leprosy, every Death album is a masterpiece in it's own way.

hmmm i dont think one can state a "best" Death record....

One can only claim their "favourite" Death record.

For me, it's Spiritual Healing. Fucking love this one.

I know this doesn't even sound possible anymore, but Spiritual Healing is easily the most underrated Death album. This might be the only Death reissue I bother to buy, my CD skips these days. Human was a completely different beast with a remaster. Dat bass. Still prefer the original mix though.

Pre ordering the fan pack right now. Favorite band.

I would love for these relapse guys to get away from the zip up hoodies though. They are kind of cheap and tent badly when you sit down. Love to see them come through with some normal hoodies.

Groundbreaking album for sure and indeed overlooked for some reason today.

That said, it could have been so much better with Chris Reifert on drums or Sean Reinhardt from the Human lineup. Bill Andrews was a tight drummer, but he sounds so much like a drum machine he wouldn't have been out of place on Godflesh's early albums, seriously. The stereotypical Morrissound production didn't help with that either.

I find that Leprosy and SH, despite the songwriting genius, sound dated today because of the drums and production, whereas Scream and Human still sound great.

I agree completely. Bill Andrews played it way too safe on both albums, but he did improve on Spiritual Healing. Apparently they sampled his snare sound on Leprosy, and that's probably a big part of why his drums sound so mechanical.

First off this album has been out of production for many years.

Second, no one takes Death CD's to a used CD store. They are to awesome. Hard to find a copy.

Third, no one is forcing you to buy anything, a lot of Death fans like myself are quite pleased with these releases and the bonus material that comes with it.

This is definitely an underrated album. James Murphy elevated death metal playing back in the day. I always considered him the death metal Malmsteen. Living Monstrosity is fucking classic riffing. Chuck put in one of the most comprehensible vocal performances in death metal history. This album stood out of the pack back then and still does now.

Judging by your statement I think you're just pretending to notice any difference between the original and a remaster.

I hate the I-tune exclusive crap. I don't have I-tunes so does this mean I will never hear those tracks? Hopefully someone will Youtube them so I can at least hear them. I would buy them if they were available! However it does irk me that if they are preHuman tracks why weren't they put on the Human package? etc... grrr!

only because the later albums had superior drumming. Spiritual healing benefited greatly from James Murphy's guitar work for sure. Had this on cassette tape and wore it out. They shouldve included a live dvd from this tour, that wouldve made this reissue perfect.

I remember Devastation opened up for them on this tour. We saw them at The Anthrax in Norwalk, CT where moron skinheads threw vasaline on Terry Date's bass. Saw then again the next night at The Living Room in Providence, RI. Place was packed and it was a much better show. Think it was March 7th or 8th 1990.

This album totally fucking owns.

Brilliant cover art, riffs, vocals, the works. I remember buying this when I was in high school and then seeing them live shortly after and they killed it so bad. They had the most brutal pit and I was in that shit fucking it up with all the fellas. Great pit memories for me. :)

From then on, Death was in my veins. This album is so fucking classic its not even funny. Long live Chuck!!!

I can understand a shitty remaster. Raise the levels and bam you got a remaster. Not always the case. If one got ahold of the original master tapes, a remaster can sound amazing. 2 shining examples are Triumph-Greatest Hits Remixed and the Sacred Reich-Ignorance/Surf Nicaragua remastered box. I thought those two were 100 times better than the original released. Now recent releases like the Pantera CFH remaster and the Nuclear Assault remasters are just horrible. THOSE were done with the levels cranked to the point they were distorted. It is hit or miss with a lot. But these Death reissues have been great. Especially the Human release. There are plenty of good out of print albums getting the remaster treatment but which ones are good or bad is again hit or miss. Check out some of the reissues put out by Metal Mind Productions. The Exhorder releases they did are solid.

It was a day '91 that truly did change my taste in music. As usual, every few days I walked into the local shop in Ocean Beach, San Diego and came across The Tape. DEATH? Who the hell is this? I would have just placed it back in the 'D' section if not for the artwork and title. Intrigued! Listened and loved the hell out of it never knowing these guys already had a huge following. The best listening on the heels of Slay's SOTA!
