PAUL STANLEY Says It Was Very Important For KISS To Not Involve Outside Writers On 'Monster' - Oct. 8, 2012
Legendary rockers KISS will release their 20th studio album, "Monster", on October 9 through Universal Music Enterprises. Described in a press release as a "12-track, straight-ahead rock 'n' roll album," the CD features collaborations among all four members — including co-founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons and longtime members guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer — in an album that shows the band at the top of its game.

"Monster" is the group's first studio album since the band's 2009 smash success, "Sonic Boom", and was also produced by Paul Stanley with Greg Collins at Conway Studios in Hollywood, California, and The Nook in Studio City, California.

Speaking to Artisan News (see video below), Stanley said that he wanted "Monster" to be a a true collaboration, and as producer, wouldn't stand for anything but a cohesive, focused band album.

"Ultimately, anytime you involve outside people, you're diluting what the band does, and you're also leaving some loopholes for people to not do their job," he said. "And it was important to me, and basically a deal-breaker in terms of producing the album, that the band wrote all the material."

He continued, "When you have outside writers, it kind of means sometimes that you don't have to do any work. You have somebody else write a song and you slap your name on it. So it gives you the ability to go off and do other projects when you should be taking care of your home. So I wanted to avoid those kinds of pitfalls."

"Monster" track listing (iTunes version):

01. Hell Or Hallelujah
02. Wall Of Sound
03. Freak
04. Back To The Stone Age
05. Shout Mercy
06. Long Way Down
07. Eat Your Heart Out
08. The Devil Is Me
09. Outta This World
10. All For The Love Of Rock & Roll
11. Take Me Down Below
12. Last Chance
13. Right Here Right Now

I hate to say it being a lifelong kiss fan but, I have heard the entire new album a few times and its not good at all. It does sound like the 70's version of the band but the songwriting is weak and nowhere near the classics from them.

Before I heard it, I though Hell Or Hallelujah would be one of the weaker songs. Now it's the best song by far.

Meh, you don't like it because it has a 70s sound yet if they had a more modern sound people would whine that they didn't sound like they did in the 70s any more.

Monster crushes it. Period. Fantastic late career effort from the band. It's netting nearly universal praise from critics...lots of reviews have gone up today. Martin Poppoff 8.5/10, Classic Rock Magazine 9/10, Even the Associated Press called it "scary good". It improves on multiple listens too. I figured we'd be getting a heavier take on the previous cd...but its more than that. I'm sure the usual Blabber-regulars will dismiss it outright. But it truly is surprisingly good.

This is probably the most boring Kiss album I have ever heard. The production sounds like it was done by a 12 year old who doesn't know what he's doing. They need to take off the makeup, Eric needs to use the double kicks again, Tommy Thayer needs to go back to being a roadie, and Bruce needs to come back, so they can start churning out some good hard rock music.

And yes, Sonic Boom was way better.

Would love to see Vinnie Vincent in Kiss again, or do some solo work. The best guitar player Kiss ever had.

I think that they should have brought in outside writers.. because I think the writing on this album is very weak. And I'm not one to bash KISS just to bash them, i actually like them. This album is simply not very good (and i gave it 5 or 6 chances)

Outside writers write generic music which are done by "artists" like Lada Gaga and Pink.

Lady Gaga 's music is far from generic. Plus she writes her own music!

Until Thayer and Singer stop looking like Ace and Peter, it's not KISS for me. Andrew Luck is not wearing #18 in Indy this season, is he? And, Manning is not wearing #7 in Denver. Different field, but same idea.

I'm a huge fan...so I hate to say that Kiss is on their "Rock and roll anthem" kick again. Nothing original. Eric sings an r 'n b, Peter Criss, Hooked on Rock 'n Roll type song. Fake Ace sings an outer space or lightning bolt song. Geno is a devil, blah, blah, fucking blah.
I'm ready for them to take the makeup off, make up with past members, and have a tour that features everyone - without the common set list songs.
Retire with dignity.

You know for a fact Eric can't stand this cheesy lead Paul wrote for him, to play the "Catman". He looks like a bloated dork in the bad wig and vest (with Peter patch on it). All for the money.
I'm sure Fake Ace would play the part for free. He's the ultimate fan boy of the band and Ace. Out of the tribute band, playing lead instead of tuning Acr's guitar. If he was a true musician he would now turn it down - after getting paid. He won't.
It's really sad.
