ANTHRAX Bassist: METALLICA 'Really Gave Us A Kick In The Ass' To Be A Band Again - Oct. 6, 2012
PureGrainAudio's Mitch Lafon conducted an interview with ANTHRAX bassist Frank Bello and lead guitarist Rob Caggiano before the band's October 2 concert in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. You can now watch the chat below.

Asked about how timing the release of ANTHRAX's latest album, "Worship Music", to coincide with the band's appearances at the "Big Four" concert at the Yankee Stadium in New York City helped make the record such a critical and commercial success, Bello said, "It [was a] huge [part of it]. It put us back in the limelight. I mean, METALLICA's the biggest band in the world. And to be on stage with them, let alone [as part of the] 'Big Four', it was huge for us, and it put us in front of this whole new fanbase."

He continued, "I take my hat off to METALLICA. Not only are their our friends, but they really gave us a kick in the ass, which was what we needed to get to be a band again. And we're bearing fruit on it, which is beautiful. To see 14-year-old kids coming up to, saying they love this record, they grew up on my bass playing from their father, or whatever it may be, I love that. That's what it's about.

"So now we have this whole turnover between the younger kids and our older crowd, which we love … But you've gotta come up with the goods. Nobody cares if you don't come up with the goods. We knew we had something special. It all worked. It was the perfect storm. We knew it was the right thing to do it at Yankee Stadium, to release it around that time; it was big hype thing on that, the 'Big Four.' It all worked nicely, but we knew we had the goods, so to speak."

ANTHRAX recently spent time in the studio recording several cover versions of some of their favorite rock classics, to be included with the upcoming re-release of "Worship Music".

In addition to RUSH and BOSTON covers, ANTHRAX is also recording its versions of AC/DC's "T.N.T.", JOURNEY's "Keep On Runnin'" and BLACK SABBATH's "Neon Knights". The latter song is expected to appear on the upcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album which is being assembled by the singer's widow and longtime manager Wendy Dio.

Good for them.

5-6 years ago, this level of success for them was unthinkable. They ditched Bush, did a hasty reunion with Spitz and Belladonna which fell apart, got Dan Nelson, tried to get Bush back who only agreed to help them out on some festival dates, and THEN took Belladonna back.

I don't like how Charlie and Scott have done business over the years, but things are looking up for them now.

Never was much of a fan until I saw them a couple of weeks ago with Testament and Death Angel. They kicked my ass and now I have to say they actually do have some original songs that are good.

Bullshit, nancyboy, they're the most fun out of all the Big 4, with the others taking themselves much too seriously at times. Underrated indeed!

No Anthrax, no Limp Bizkit. Remember that. Always.

You can have your fun metal music... check out IWRESTLEDABEARONCE. That's probably right up your alley.

Wow... that's quite possibly the douchiest comment I've ever read. I can't stand metalheads who have to take themselves seriously all the time, without realizing how absolutely cartoonish it makes them look. By the way... I'm offended that you would compare Anthrax to those two shit bands.

It is RIDICULOUS that Frank feels a need to say that. Anthrax should have been in the eyes and mind of whatever "new fanbase" Metallica has been in front of all along. Their fan bases overlapped way back in the day, and that should have never changed. It's not as if Anthrax is from a genre or period that's different from Metallica's. They started at the same time, released their debut albums less than a year apart from each other, and made names for themselves at the same time.

just because you think anthrax deserved the same recongition as metallica, doesnt mean we all agree. LETS FACE IT, metallica is a better band than anthrax. .And whats RIDICULOUS about his statement??.....Its the truth, 65% of the people only went to see the big four show was for metallica with the added bonus of slayer, megadeth, and anthrax. Its take slayer, megadeth, and anthrax etc. to sell out an arena show..............Metallica doesnt need any bands, them alone can sell out, an ARENA TOUR and none of you fuckers better bitch, because you know its the truth..........SO STOP CRYING AND DEAL WITH IT

re-release of worshit music??? why?? if not for milking-the-cow-reasons. first: that album is not THAT good. it had a good start but became boring very quickly. no substance. the likes of 13. then: metallica should have kicked someone else's ass, really.

I gotta say the guys from Anthrax are absolutely cool dudes, and I've been a fan of their music for a very long time. I think they're the least respected of the Big 4, and that's just not right seeing as they and Metallica were the first two bands to play thrash metal.

Yeah, I'm glad these guys are back to form and all, but Scott has got to stop trying to peddle his attempts to sound modern, all those sugary, anthemic choruses he throws in there are really quite pathetic and unecessary.
Worship suffers greatly because of this foolish tecnique. I gave it a couple of listens, forced myself to like it but now it's officially a coaster.

I don't know what people are smoking when they say Worship Music is a return to form. It is in no way shape or form a thrash metal album like Among The Living or even heavy like POT.

It is semi commercialized heavy rock with a few thrashy elements here and there. Besides Earth on Hell and Fight Em not much that reminds me of the classic Anthrax.

Not a bad album at all but not a return to form.

I hope Scott doesn't try to fuck up the next album by trying to make it even more mainstream thinking he will get Anthrax to a new level. Keep it heavy, fast, and the fans will buy it. Try to fuck with it too much and you will end up with Stomp 442 or Volume 8 which were disasters.

The guy Rob needs to a serious make over. Leather Jacket with a beanie? It's unbelievable that dude wears that thing 24/7 I bet he sleeps with it and showers with it. I am thinking it may be permanently stapled to his scalp!

And to those that say the guys in Anthrax are cool dudes, you would be correct... except for Scott Ian who is a total cock sucker in person. Just about everyone I know in the industry can't stand that guy

Metalimpression, I couldn't agree more (for once). Furthermore, I'd like to say it's a sad state of affairs when a half-flaccid, semi-commercial metal album like this is praised. Back in the hey-day people would have called WM a sellout. But we can thank Metallica for making metal more accessible, which brought in a legion of Riotacts and now lukewarm metal is completely acceptable and raved about. I'll give them credit for a good production, and Joey sounding great, and the blast beat was a nice touch (amusing that some idiots actually bitched about that).

I kinda agree.

I think it's a very solid album, but I didn't quite get all of the profuse gushing from the metal community over it.

It's got a lot of good points to it, but it's not very thrash, and there a lot of modern metal elements to it that make it sound very un-Anthrax at points.

I wish I could've gotten more into the Reunion they did 5 years or so back, but wish more that Spitz would've rejoined them permanently, but oh, well. The album in question, 'Worship Music' is a great release, to me. If you are asking for a lot more from them, you might be being greedy about it.

Not many bands are putting out albums these days, that can match such an album. TestAment put out a great Lp., so did rUSh, and Over Kill, just to name some. The last few 2 MegaDeth Lp's are really, really good, to me.

Again, not everyone out there is putting out such a quality release as Anthrax did. Listen to it more!

yea a lot of people that only listen to 1-2 songs an album go to Metallica concerts to listen to enter sandman and Nothing else matter and then when master of puppets and songs from that album and before that, lots of these people dont know those songs. saw them few years ago play all of master of puppets and lot of people around me only woke up when songs from the black album got played. it happens with most huge bands. and Metallica is the most likely band of the big 4 to be realy big because they started to play more simple music anmd Hetfield has more commercial voice then the other singers. but all these other bands have been making very good albums in the last 20 years while Metallica has only released crap.
have seen all of the other big 4 bands live and i have to say all of them are much better and tighter. but still Metallica was fine.

Metallica took Anthrax on tour back in the day. Cliff was a big fan of them and Metallica even gave them food from their catering because otherwise Anthrax would have litterally starved to death.

That said, Anthrax are by far the better band today. Their stage presence is impressively energetic (remember they have the same age as Metallica, Belladonna is even fifty or so). Megadeth and Metallica certainly can't hold a candle. They play like robots to hide the fact that they're tired of playing Creeping Death or Hangar 18 every night since before most of their fans were born. Slayer are still entertaining and solid, though they're getting static on stage too.

Never ever will Anthrax be a better band than Metallica, on record or live, that's just ridiculous. By 1989, that's 6 years after the big four started (give or take) Metallica was far and away ahead of the pack. And unlike Anthrax and Megadeth, Metallica weren't all over MTV hocking their shit to people 24hrs a fucking day. Metallica's first video was from AJFA, their fourth album. Anthrax and Megadeth jumped to that shit on their second albums. What I'm trying to say is that back then, Metallica was doing their own thing, paving their own way, not using pop culture to find and cultivate an audience. These other guys, with Slayer as an exception, were using conventional routes that (in hindsight) garnered diminished returns. Saying anything different makes you sound like a clueless kid without a clue of the past or a poser who thinks by saying something as ridiculous as Anthrax & Metallica are equals makes you somehow cooler than everyone else. Come back to reality.
