IRON MAIDEN's STEVE HARRIS On Solo Album: 'This Is Not Throwaway MAIDEN Stuff' - Oct. 6, 2012
J. Bennett of Decibel magazine recently conducted an interview with IRON MAIDEN bassist/founder Steve Harris about Steve's solo/side project album, "British Lion". A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Decibel: How long have you been thinking about doing a solo album?

Harris: Oh, forever. Since about ' 93. [laughs] It's been so long, it's ridiculous. I'm just so relieved to get this thing out, really, because it's finally there. I'm really pleased with the results, but it's taken a long while. I think everyone knows that I'm always the one that's the busiest in MAIDEN. When we're not touring or recording, I'm still doing loads of MAIDEN stuff — video editing and god knows what else — so I get a lot less downtime than the others. That's why it's taken so long, really. I was just trying to fit bits in here and there when the other people were available to work on stuff while I was back in the U.K., which over the last few years has not been very often.

Decibel: The press release mentioned that you recorded the album in secret between MAIDEN tours. Why the secrecy?

Harris: Yeah, I suppose that sounds a bit like espionage or something. But we just didn't tell anyone what was going on, really. These days, with the Internet and everything else, it's nice to have a little mystique in something. People weren't expecting this album, and it was a difficult thing to keep under wraps. But it was all done in the quiet, I suppose.

Decibel: Did the other guys in MAIDEN know what you were up to?

Harris: No. Not for a long time they didn't, anyway. I mean, when someone else in MAIDEN is working on another project, no one really talks about it. When Bruce [Dickinson, vocals] or Adrian [Smith, guitar] does stuff, they don't go around broadcasting to the others, and I didn't either. Actually, the only one in MAIDEN who's even heard the album is Nicko [McBrain, drums], because he asked to hear it. So, I played it for him. But the other guys haven't asked to hear it, so I haven't played it for them. Simple as that, really.

Decibel: My impression is that you're the main songwriter in MAIDEN. So, when you were working on this stuff...

Harris: I think I know what you're going to say. This is not throwaway MAIDEN stuff. These are not riffs that I could've used in MAIDEN because, like I said, it was done with other people. As soon as that happens, it's not gonna be used in MAIDEN. And the thing is, I've got a ridiculous amount of ideas that I'm probably never gonna get out the door in my lifetime. [laughs] So, there's no shortage of ideas for MAIDEN. And this stuff is different, anyway. It's more heavy rock than heavy metal, but to me the influences are all from the Well, it seemed like it would portray that idea same era. I have such a wide variety of influences from the '70s anyway. I mean, I think ["British Lion" track] "Us Against The World" sounds a bit like MAIDEN ... maybe "The Chosen Ones" and "A World Without Heaven", because they've got those harmony guitars. But in general it's more riffy, yeah? Well, obviously there's lots of melody, but then there's loads of melody in MAIDEN as well. Sometimes I think MAIDEN doesn't get enough credit for the melody we do have.

The entire interview can be found in the November 2012 issue of Decibel magazine, available on newsstands now.

no, it's much, much worse, Steve. Please don't even compare this to your primary band. This is horrible. Please stop wasting time and get with the boys and make another masterpiece. I still listen to The Final Frontier regularly; it's an amazing record top to bottom, imo.

Hate to think outside the box, but if he has such an amazing surplus of material for Maiden, you'd think one day he'd figure out a way to write a chorus that doesn't repeat the same exact line sixteen times.

OK boys and girls, for the last time, the singer does NOT suck
you have never heard a real singer before so you don't understand it.
Also SOLO albums are not meant to be/sound like the artists "main band" they are for playing something different!
Why are you people struggling with these ideas?

Steve, it sucks, but do your thing, in fact take a couple of years off from Maiden. That'll give Bruce just enough time to get together with Roy Z and record a new solo album. Thanks.

I don't understand why bands do videos anymore. What's the point of trying to look cool or tough in a video in this day and age. Who are you trying to impress, your 40+ fan base?

This song sucks, but there are some half decent songs on the album.

I love Steve Harris and respect the hell out of him as an artist, but I just can't get into British Lion at all.

Maybe the fact that Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding are masterpieces that are as good, or even better, than most Maiden albums has stuck in his craw.

Either way...love you, Steve, but gather the boys up and get a new Maiden album out PRONTO.

the guy's not technically a bad singer-- he's just completely, completely wrong for this album, hell, for this style of music. Art Garfunkel would've put more balls into it than this jabronie.

So wait a second here....bandmates for 30 years need to ask to hear your record? They won't, because their egos are as big as yours and they couldn't give 2 shits about it. That's what the journalist was thinking as you were answering the question.

I must be in the 1% that likes the album and I've been a diehard maiden fan since about 1982. It's not trying too hard to showboat or to blow your doors off, it's just a solid consistent honest rock album. It's not like it's Geoff Tate's latest effort or anything.

It must be part of their overall recording contract with studios.

Nowadays, music videos are almost strictly for online viewing.

It seems like a waste of money to me with no financial upside, particularly for vintage metal bands...their fanbase do NOT care about videos.

Maybe for younger pop artists whose fans are more web-savvy, it makes sense, but not for bands like Maiden or Slayer.

Remember those cringe-worthy CGI videos for Heaven and Hell's "Bible Black" and Slayer's "World Painted Blood"?

I mean...wow. Why the FUCK even bother? Simply embarrassing. Even the guys in H&H complained about what a hack-job the record label did for their video...apparently they had NO input or say on it.

In this day and age MTV type "videos" are a complete waste of money. Unless you're shooting a live show fro Blu-ray release it's not worth the cost.

I like the album.... British Lion, Tattooed Millionaire, Skunkworks, ASAP and Awaken Broken are the albums that save Maiden.

Why?

Because unlike a certain Metallica, Maiden's creative axis like to experiment AWAY from their core band. Imagine if Lulu had been the Hetfield/Ulrich/Reed side project it should have been?

Steve honestly a bit...bitter? in this interview, which is a tone I've never heard from him before.

The whole thing about saying he's busier than the other guys in the band...I think Bruce Dickinson would have something to say about that.

And about the other guys not asking to hear it...I mean, yeah, these guys aren't close friends like they were back in the day, but it's always a bummer when you realize that most of these vintage bands are a business arrangement more than anything.

I guess the one exception to this rule is Rush. Those guys are legitimate brothers-in-arms who love each other, which I think is great.

He said he was busier with MAIDEN stuff and thus gets less time off from MAIDEN than the rest of the band, which is 100@ accurate, silly boy.

As for British Lion - uggghhh.

I didn't mind it but I'm not loosing any sleep over this. The vocals are weak. Get a new guy. The guitars do do anything the bass is just there. If Steve wants to get this out of his system, then let him. At least it not a collaboration with Lou Reed. Could you imagine if someone did that. That would horrible.

I would've loved to hear BLAZE on this record (way better).
However, the album (musically) isn't that bad. I like the guitar sound and the riffs are good, too. The drumming isn't bad.

No, it's not VERY good, but I am not regretting purchasing it. I think it's a 3 star album. I also dare to say that, I don't think he was trying to make an album for MAIDEN fans, as much as we might love to believe.

The singer isn't very Metal, no. However, in defense of the album, I believe it's not awful, like some of you guys are repeatedly saying. If you haven't bought the album and listened to it on a good stereo, then you don't really have any way of knowing whether it sounds decent or awful. I don't think it's awful, just not Great! I will give it a chance, you should too. After a few spins, I dig it enough.

I agree... I think that's the most fair review so far. It's grown on me after a few spins. I haven't bought anything, from ANY "genre" that has blown my socks off in a while... If bands knew that they could go out and get rich again, with a GREAT album, the quality would come back... but, that wasn't Steve's motivation here anyway... I like "World Without Heaven" & a couple more. As a singer, I'm used to "rock" singers. I don't just listen to METAL, although I LOVE Metal dearly... I'm not pulling a Geoff Tate here. LOL I think the singer is really good... He just has a smooth voice... more like Steve Overland, IMO.
