Is 'Broken Bones' DOKKEN's Final Studio Album? - Oct. 2, 2012
During an interview with Eddie Trunk on yesterday's (Monday, October 1) edition of the "Eddie Trunk Live" show on SiriusXM satellite radio, DOKKEN mainman Don Dokken revealed that the band's latest album, "Broken Bones", will be its last. According to EddieTrunk.com, Don explained that he wants to move on, spread his musical wings and do something different. He also told Trunk that he would like to make a very "heavy" metal record, featuring a musical direction that the singer described as "a cross between TOOL and SLAYER."

In other news, DOKKEN has parted ways with drummer Mick Brown and has replaced him with Jimmy DeGrasso (MEGADETH, Y&T, ALICE COOPER, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES).

DOKKEN's new video, "Empire", can be seen below. The clip was directed by Devin DeHaven (WHITESNAKE, P.O.D., BUSTA RHYMES) and features a post-apocalyptic take on the band's signature sound of catchy melodies, hot riffs and monster production.

"Empire" comes off DOKKEN's 11th studio album, "Broken Bones", which was released in North America on September 25 via Frontiers Records. The effort was made available in two configurations: standard CD and limited-edition CD in digipak with a bonus DVD, which features a comprehensive "Making Of The Album" documentary.

"Broken Bones" was produced by DOKKEN frontman and namesake Don Dokken and was mixed by Bob St. John (EXTREME, DURAN DURAN, COLLECTIVE SOUL) and Wyn Davis (BLACK SABBATH, DIO, WHITESNAKE) and mastered by famed engineer Maor Appelbaum (HALFORD, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, SEPULTURA). The new set features a return to the band's signature sound of catchy melodies, hot riffs and monster production.

"Broken Bones" track listing:

01. Empire
02. Broken Bones
03. Best Of Me
04. Blind
05. Waterfall
06. Victim Of The Crime
07. Burning Tears
08. Today
09. For The Last Time
10. Fade Away
11. Tonight

Don Dokken stated in a recent interview about the "Broken Bones" album title, "[It] is a metaphor that we all have broken bones, be it from an accident, failed relationship, or a broken heart. Everybody gets wounded as we go through life, but, as they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

Dokken previously described the band's new material as "very uptempo and heavy." He added, "We know our fans like the classic DOKKEN sound, and this is where our new music is headed. It's been a band of brothers doing what we love: 'music.'"

Regarding the new songs' lyrical approach, Dokken said, "I write what comes from the heart, I don't believe in writing music trying to repeat what you've already done. I understand what the fans want but as an artist I see no point in painting the same picture over and over."

The cooperation between Frontiers and DOKKEN started with the European release of the group's "Lightning Strikes Again" CD in 2007. The album marked a return to DOKKEN's signature style with melodic hooklines and blazing guitar riffs that epitomized the band's sound on such records as "Tooth And Nail", "Under Lock And Key", "Back For The Attack" and "Dysfunctional".

Don is 59 years old. The record buying public isn't looking for him to reinvent himself at this point.

Kick ass song though. Look as if they will go out with a bang on this one. Looking forward to it. At least it was Mick Brown on the recordings.

Don knows it wont be Dokken anymore with just him in it. Smart...

Plus I've always thought if any of the 80's LA style bands could go Heavy... well Dokken would do pretty good.

Actualy Tommy Lee laid down the drum tracks for this one because Mick was out touring with Ted Nugent and recording with T&N.

Great new CD from Dokken. If it is in fact the final album, It's a good way to go out. But Don won't ever stop making music, Don't buy that for one minute.

but i liked the solo in this.

Don's voice was never strong back in the 80s. now in 2012, he's sounds like he's talking throughout the song, with a little vibratto thrown on to make it "singing."

song isn't bad but it needs a powerhouse singer to do it justice.

To start over with the original band.

Don is a dumbass, but can't be diluted enough to think that anyone would care for his 'Tool/Slayer sound of the future. Or can he?.....

Dokken already tried to sound like Tool on..the dysfunctional..album i think it was called. It sucked. Plus, back then he bitched about lynch trying to sound tool-ish. Reb beach said Don wanted to write Beatle-esque songs all day.

Don already said BB was the last Dokken cd on Rockline weeks ago. I think he's earned the right to do what he wants. I'm glad he wants to go in a heavier direction. Since his voice is shot, maybe he's gonna growl his vocals, but he likes melody too much to do it exclusely. I wish he would get in better physical shape. I just watched my Live From The Sun dvd from 2000 & he looked & sounded great!

if Don's voice is shot, how in the hell is he gonna sing like Tom Araya? thrashmetal vocals demand much more from a singer than hardrock.

A Tool-Meets-Slayer album would be fucking rad. I don't think he's capable of that though. Doesn't hurt to try I guess...

why would he want to keep working with brown who is working with lynch and the others? and hate Don all you want but the these last 2 cd's prove he was the sound of the band that bears his name. lynch is a good player but nothing he or the others have put out solo come close to the Dokken sound.as for future projects good luck Don but old fans like me are not interested and fans of the bands you want to sound like hate your music and won't buy it.

Erase The Slate with Reb Beach was sick! Sick grooves, riffs & melodies! Better than screamo/whine-O. Whatever...Dokken wrote Tooth & Nail, one of the heaviest Metal albums among their peers & nobody can take that away. Drama or not (it runs in all of our families), Dokken is still better than screamo/whine-O. \m/\m/

They stepped it nicely on this record, so it is a good way to go out; on top. I do agree Dokken's voice was never up there with Bach, Halford, Dio, Dickinson, etc..., and it's definitely on a steady decline; but I must say, I'm excited to hear the new project. Maybe he plans on trying something new vocally, and it's not going to fit with the Dokken sound...it could have possibilities...I won't knock it without hearing it first. That's a good mix though, thrashy heavy Slayer-type with great Tool-like production and song structures...I would enjoy it that pulled off to perfection.

And yes, Don may be 59, but all those singers I mentioned before are around the same age and are still delivering great, and doing new things...it's not reinventing, it's wanting to heavy it up a bit for a change...Dokken was already pretty heavy, so it's not like a genre switch or something. I don't think it's going to be THAT much different from albums like "Hell to Pay", "Dysfunctional", or "Long Way Home" (I think it was called). Song's like "Sunless Days" were riff heavy songs, so it's not going to be brand new to him. I just hope he tries something that works for him vocally, because he's sounding half dead lately.

Probably the best Dokken song since Kiss of Death! However I have heard the rest of the album and unfortunately it's just not very good. I don't understand why they don't keep up that kind of intensity throughout the album? At least they went out with 1 killer track..........

I have mixed feeling about this. I mean, the current Dokken was pretty much a cover band but who will play their stuff live now? Reckon only Don can and should sing and if he cant then its the end of a great era. They should reuinite before calling quits.

Dokken has been Don's solo band for some time now...the lineup really hasn't been stable since 2004 or so, lots of people coming and going for touring purposes or one off shows or whatever, Mick's hardly been the "true" drummer for the band for a while now, what with his Ted Nugent bullshit going on (and anything related to Ted Nugent is bullshit, let's be honest).

The last two albums have actually been pretty fantastic, and while I'm kinda sad to see it go, I mean...a final album and tour with Don and hired help just doesn't seem like the right way to send DOKKEN off into the sunset.

I'm kinda hopeful that, since George, Jeff and Mick and all doing the TAN Band thing with whoever-the-fuck's singing, there's still hope for the real lineup to get back together. I don't really care about another studio album out of them, per se (because I don't honestly believe in my heart of hearts that George Lynch has what it takes to make a Dokken album anymore, I just don't)...but it would be nice if they could just get themselves on the same track pattern and go out on a final farewell type tour, that'd be pretty outstanding.

It'd make it better if they'd just kinda do the first four albums only, too, and throw in some REAL obscure and rarely seen stuff live in this day and age...I'd shit myself if they'd bust out Night Rider, Seven Thunders, Don't Close Your Eyes, Back for the Attack, Turn On the Action, Til the Livin End and Lightning Strikes Again...

That'd be seriously fucking awesome, and I'm pretty sure there'd be a real, real, REAL good payday out of it for them - at least enough to make sure that the fans would be happy and Don and George would never have to speak to each other again, lmao...

Make it happen, guys!
