SOUNDGARDEN Drummer Responds To BILLY CORGAN's Comments - Sep. 29, 2012
SOUNDGARDEN drummer Matt Cameron has responded to comments by Billy Corgan in which the SMASHING PUMPKINS frontman called out Nineties contemporaries, including SOUNDGARDEN, for cashing in with their reunion tours.

"There are those bands that are essentially coming back only to make money — playing their old albums, and maybe somewhere in the back of their minds they're thinking there might be a future," Corgan said at a press conference before a show in the Philippines.

He continued: "I am not in that business, obviously. I condemn anybody who's in that business but doesn't admit [he's] in that business. When SOUNDGARDEN came back and they just played their old songs, great. I was a fan of SOUNDGARDEN, but call it for what it is. They're just out there to have one more round at the till; same with PAVEMENT and these other bands."

Corgan later appeared on the Channel 93.3 radio station in Denver, Colorado and explained his beef with SOUNDGARDEN. He said, in part, "[SOUNGARDEN singer] Chris Cornell was somebody I considered a friend, and would never have said a harsh word about.

"When [SMASHING PUMPKINS] came back in 2007, [Cornell] was quoted in an interview saying, basically, he didn't consider our reunion, in quotations, to be 'legitimate.' So that's something that's… I kind of have an elephant's memory when it comes to somebody punching me in the face."

He continued, "Cornell's one of those people who is extremely talented. I was a fan from literally, I think, their second EP. I met them in 1991 and [I] still believe in what was great about the band. But when we're sitting there having conversations about who is doing what, I am no longer gonna shield somebody. If they wanna punch me in the face, I'm happy to punch them back in the face.

"My point is don't lump us in with people who are sort of just doing the reunion lap. Now, of course, fans are lighting up my Twitter saying, 'Do you realize SOUNDGARDEN is doing a new album?' OK, well, if they are, great. That's what they should be doing. [They are] great musicians, [and] they should make new music, and hopefully they'll make great albums, because we need artists to make great albums and great music in this day and age of the robots and the posers and, you know, the 'faux hawk' bands."

In a brand new interview with the WXDX-FM radio station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (hear audio below), Cameron was asked if he was surprised by Corgan's comments.

"I watched a couple of interviews that he did, kind of recently, where he was just talking about the current music scene, and I kind of agree with him on a lot of stuff," Matt replied. "I think Billy's a super-smart guy."

He continued, "I personally would never, sort of, begrudge another musician for having a gig. Because that's kind of what we do this for.

"It's just amazing that SOUNDGARDEN has an audience and that PEARL JAM has an audience.

"Ultimately, we do it for ourselves as artists, but when you can connect with an audience, small or large, that's kind of what keeps you going.

"I mean, I certainly understand why people would question bands that reunite… So, I'll just leave it at that."

Once was enough with Nirvana...

Besides, the old members don't need a reunion. They're doing just fine as it is.

The thing is, if Soundgarden was in it for a huge payday, they've been awfully weird about capitalizing on it. They've taken their time with their album, they've been selective about their dates, and as far as I know, they've only done the one North American tour (which they kicked ass on btw). Cornell did a solo acoustic tour right in the midst of the band reforming. To me, that sounds like a band that's taking their time to do what they want. Either that, or their booking agent has a weird idea of capitalizing and building momentum. Not to mention they were playing a lot of material from their lesser successful albums. Hell, I saw setlists where they avoided most of their singles in favor of lesser played material. You'd think they'd be eager to play Superunknown or Down on The Upside in their entirety.

Maybe Billy Corgan isn't capitalizing on his past in that he refuses to pander to an audience that only wants one thing from him, but how is using the name Smashing Pumpkins when you're writing music as a solo artist any different? I guarantee that if Billy Corgan was marketable as a solo artist, this wouldn't even be an issue.

Yes a Nirvana reunion would be offensive with Cobain's smelly corpse up on the stage.

Corgan doesn't have room to talk, going out as Smashing Pumpkins with replacement members. At least Soundgarden have the classic lineup, cue ball!

Soundgarden reunion...all of the classic lineup & a new studio cd...
Smashing Pumkins 'reunion' ONE FUCKING GUY who hijacked the name like Axl Rose, and fronts a glorified tribute band...going so far as to have an asian guitarist and chick bassist...

YOU LOSE, FRAUD.

If you had any balls, you'd go out under your own name and present your songs as they are...solo material...
but you hide behind the name Smashing Pumpkins because that's the only way to make a buck.

He says that he heard Mr. Bill talk about the music scene, but not necessarily his gripe with what Cornell said.

Matt most likely played dumb. He's drumming for two major bands, makin' crazy n's, and has no reason to get into a war of words.

Both these bands suck. Alternative music was a skid mark on the underpants of music. And people didnt grow tired of the 80's stuff, the media made that up. Lets face it, the hair metal and thrash metal bands were selling MILLIONS of records up to the point the media started marketing GRUNGE. The record companies and the media killed metal in the mid 90s. Then when the clouds settled around 1997 people started to see that grunge was an image and the music and talent itself was a step BACKWARD. The 90s had the most ONE HIT WONDERS in the history of music. Thats why it died so quickly. These 2 bands hit while the iron was hot in the mid 90s and that was it. Billy Corgan and his SP cover band and Soundgarden are relics from a forgettable genre. WHO CARES!

Good thing that they started marketing grunge because bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were a fuckton heavier than those pussy ass hair metal acts and their makeup during the 80's. They actually churned out riffs that nearly brung back 70's Black Sabbath. And while there were derivative acts like Bush and Candlebox that milked off the alt rock scene and essentially killed it, bands like Soundgarden and The Smashing Pumpkins were extremely innovative. But knowing you, you probably took them by their most popular singles and labeled them as "generic 90's alt bands".

He was not only talking about "pussy ass hair metal acts" He was talking about Heavy Metal in general, and for your information most of those "pussy ass hair metal acts" had way more talent and skill then any of those shitty grunge bands. Shit when I first heard the solos in stuff like Stryper's Soldiers Under Command, and Whitesnake's Whitesnake, I was blown away I wondered how people always bashed those kind of bands even though they kept on churning out awesome heavy music. Alice in Chains I never considered grunge they were Heavy Metal, they even stated in interviews how they were not grunge and how they are Heavy Metal, and finally I like how people like you like to say how oh image is not important, yet you'll gladly say glam bands suck just because they wore make up, your just like your username says, you're hipster trash, ya bandwagon jumping mother fucker, cause you know if everybody else liked glam on site, you would too.

thank you very much for this very refreshing comment. Yes, the media tried to kill metal and I believe it was the advent of the internet that gave individuals a way of finding metal again and they did so to the point that the media had to acknowledge once again the relevance of heavy metal. Alternative was crap, IMO.

So basically Billy boy is upset because he did it first and nobody gave a shit. Matt is right, though, gig's a gig and if people want it, what's the harm? The main difference here is Soundgarden and STP are actually good, whereas Smashing Pumpkins put out a bunch of whiney shit people are too embarrassed to admit they listened to in the 90s. Just go away you bald, ugly crybaby.

nobody expected bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam to be as successful as they were. 80s metal was more than a little tired at that point. Even bands like Maiden appeared to be running out of steam.

However, what i resented was the lack of balance displayed by the media back then. Although there are less inventive bands and movements on the whole, the rock and metal press are far more open minded now than they were in the early to.mid 90s.

i still remember when.commercial metal mags like Kerrang and Metal.Hammer dismissed a lot of the European melodic and atmospheric metal at the time because it had '80's influences'.

As a general rule, metal, like horror movies, was treated as a 80s hangover even if it wasn't, with few exceptions.

I'm glad those days are over.

Billy Corgan's just butthurt because no one gave a fuck when he decided to take his solo act on the road and call it Smashing Pumpkins. What's even more stupid is that Corgan looks more like a $ grabber because when he replaced the original members he "ironically" gets an Asian guitar player and a female bassist hoping the people in the back might actually mistake them for the originals. Douchebag.

so right, but you usually get over it when you get older and take things about stuff like this little easier. but every bands has a time when they are the new cool band or whatever, and then some other bands take over, that doesn't mean they are making any worse music, sometimes even better but sometimes its hard to keep up with the nostalgia or some moment in time people connect with an album. and why are people here commenting about billy coragan or smashing pumpkins when they seem to know nothing about the band, it always has been Corgan and Chamberlain, and people have been angry at some concerts because he didn't play enough of hits for the 1-2 songs an album people.
