MAYHEM In The Studio - Sep. 29, 2012
Legendary Norwegian black metallers MAYHEM have apparently entered a studio in Budapest, Hungary to begin recording their new album for an early 2013 release.

The band, which made several festival appearances in Europe this past summer, is scheduled to play a special club show in Budapest on October 5.

Asked if MAYHEM has begun working on material for the follow-up to 2007's "Ordo Ad Chao", the group's bassist, Jørn Stubberud (a.k.a. Necrobutcher), told Total Rock Radio in August, "I think that we are not a traditional band in that matter, that we make an album every year and then do a tour with that. 'Cause we don't feel it's necessary to do that — we do an album when we feel like doing an album. It's true — all the guys have some other projects also; like Hellhammer [drums] has ARCTURUS, Attila [Csihar, vocals] has VOID OV VOICES and SUNN O))). It takes time to come up with some good stuff, and we don't wanna rush anything. But we are now, actually, working on some new stuff. It's very hard to say [when the next CD will be released], but we are currently working on some new material and we have a plan to do something that will kick us in the ass a little bit. It's too long a story to go into that [right now]. . . We're waiting for the right inspiration, but having a blast in the meantime, too — travelling around the world and playing."

MAYHEM was honored in the "Metal" category at the 36th annual Spellemann awards (the Norwegian equivalent to the Grammy Awards) for "Ordo Ad Chao".

"Ordo Ad Chao" entered the Norwegian album chart at position No. 12, the band's highest position ever.

And ask BURZUM to get back in the band. no need in denying what needs to happen. even if he says no. you ask all the same. then again maybe they have. he probably finds them jokes now. can't say i blame him.

is a masterpiece. Such a great album. Unfortunately Rune Eriksen isn't there to write the music anymore. Will be interesting to see what they come up with, but I can't imagine it will be even close to the quality of Ordo Ad Chao. Hope they prove me wrong.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. The relationship Rune's riffs had with Hellhammer's drumming style on Ordo was truly terrifying and unique and will probably never be repeated by any other band.

Ordo was cool but I far prefer Chimaira or Wolf Layer's Abyss. Maniac's voice was the shit.

Chimaira was insane for sure, but Attila brings a certain atmosphere Maniac was unable to channel.

Each studio album has been its own experience and an awesome one...

Fingers crossed that the new guitarist can do something with them, considering what legendary shoes have filled that role in the past.

But with Hellhammer and Attila there is huge potential regardless.

It's about fucking time! As a Mayhem fan I won't believe it until I'm holding it in my hand, but I'm looking forward to them working with Teloch and Morfeus when it finally happens. I just hope that Necrobutcher contributes more to the songwriting process this time around as he did in the early days, and is the only remaining original member.

I'm just glad Attila is still with the band. One of the best voices in metal. These dudes need to kick it into gear already!

I would love to see Mayhem revisinting their roots at least to some extent, bringing back riffs in the style of early Euronymous' style, you know, that Deathcrush or Pure F** Arm style from before the time everything had to sound so evil and "transylvanian". I really enjoy the pretentiousness of De Mysteriis, but it didn't work out well after Euronymous' departure from the band and this world, it started to sound like pretentious crap.

I think they would benefit of a less pretentious theatrical approach and a more rock'n'roll, "in your face" approach, which is pretty much the road most Norwegian bm bands took in the mid-late 2000s (that I hate, especially Darkthrone punk albums and all the Motorhead emulation from newer bands like Vreid and others).

It's about fuckin' time!!

The purists will undoubtedly hate whatever they come up with, but to hell with 'em. I'm looking forward to hearing something completely off-the-wall different (as all their albums have been).
