The Drama Behind PAPA ROACH Singer JACOBY SHADDIX's Throat Issues (Video) - Sep. 28, 2012
AOL's Noisecreep has uploaded a behind-the-scenes look inside the world of PAPA ROACH to see the drama that unfolded around singer Jacoby Shaddix's recent surgery to remove nodes from his vocal cords, a condition which forced him to stop singing and led his band to drop off this summer's Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival tour. The video piece features the members of the group, along with famed vocal coach Melissa Cross, Jacoby's wife, Kelly, and Dr. Joseph H. Sugarman, the throat specialist who worked on the singer.

Shaddix earlier in the week said he was bouncing back quickly from surgery. He told Loudwire, "It was a little tough in the beginning; I couldn't talk at all so that sucked. It was the longest silence of my life since I was born; I just wanted to talk so bad."

The singer told The Pulse Of Radio that things have gotten better for him once the initial post-operation period was over. "I'm in recovery from the surgery and I went in for my first follow-up appointment and everything looks good," he said. "So far, so good, so I keep my fingers crossed that nothing's going awry down there. I can talk again, obviously, my voice feels and sounds great, so it's gonna be rad to start singing again."

Asked if there will be any longterm effects on his voice, Shaddix replied, "I don't think so. I'll find out exactly how my voice sounds in the next few weeks. Anything is better than what it was, though, because it was fucking terrible."

Even before his vocal problems started, Shaddix admitted in several new interviews that he came close to committing suicide earlier in the year as he struggled with both marital problems and falling off the wagon.

Shaddix and his wife eventually reconciled, while he also went through treatment to regain his sobriety.

PAPA ROACH's new album, "The Connection", is due out on October 2. The band is scheduled to resume touring in November.

He has been singing wrong for a long time. I remember seeing them perform on Letterman or SNL or something back when Last Resort was big and he sounded horrible. He was extremely hoarse and obviously forcing his voice. I can't believe these supposed professional singers don't figure that stuff out earlier. I sing in a cover band and have to do 4 hours shows switching between different types of vocals. If I didn't sing correctly I would never make it past the second set. These guys only do 1 to 1 1/2 hour sets so maybe that's why they can keep getting away with it for so long. They have to realize something is wrong though way before needing surgery. Don Dokken is another example. Gee you've only been singing for like 30 years and you can't tell when you might be pushing it to much until you taste blood in your mouth? Comon guys get it together! There are many ways to preserve your voice. Down tune as you get older maybe. Always warm up and avoid talking in loud environments. Talking loud is very ruff on the chords; it's worse than singing loud. Obviously use your diaphragm to sing. I don't think Shaddix has ever used proper singing techniques. He's got a good voice, but he needs to learn how to use it properly and how to protect it when it's sore. You can't force through it. You have to make subtle modifications to your performance or simply reschedule.

Totally agree Vox Monster. As someone who has sung up to 12 hours in a day extremely loud with a singer's formant and has had zero vocal issues, people that are getting hurt are flat out doing something wrong. The bottom line is singing is not supposed to be uncomfortable or painful at all. I've read so much terrible advice from trained singers that most of the time it is their fault. The good ones teach themselves and never have any trouble because they take it SLOW. People do not realize how long it takes to learn how to sing properly, especially if self taught.

who is full active and sings almost five days per week for three hours per day, I must say that I totally agree with Vox Monster and Adverser.
The complete lack of sufficient technique is why our otherwise brilliant rock/metal singers suffer after their early thirties losing their range and sounding much more crispier than in their younger years.
The age factor is a little bit of a myth you know...
Explain to me why most classical singer continue to deliver even after their sixties for crying out loud!
It's the lack of technique and some quite simple rules and vocal techniques which many of the professional metal singers seem to ignore or underestimate...
It makes you wonder because there are so many examples (Roy Khan, Geoff Tate, Midnight, Hetfield, Mustaine and the list goes on...). You would expect that singers of this caliber would know how to handle their voice. But no, they don't and their decline is sad...

what a chump. guy looks like a he got lost in a trend 15 years ago & never really found out who he was. How Papa Roach made anything beyond a 2nd record is retarded. and Papa Roach is probably the lamest band name Ive ever heard. I've met NO ONE... literally NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON... who claims to like this bands music. Not even as a "guilty pleasure."

I'll admit, I bought their 1st CD. I was 14. I also remember listening to it with headphones on, then after it was over I switched it over to Pantera's CFH. After CFH, I put PR back in, made it in to 1 song, then decided to listen to CFH again, & that was the last time I willingly listened to PR.
