METALLICA Pays Tribute To Fallen Bassist With Free Concert Download - Sep. 28, 2012
On the 26th anniversary of METALLICA bassist Cliff Burton's death, the surviving members of the band have paid tribute to their fallen friend, who was killed in a bus crash in 1986.

METALLICA posted a photo of Cliff on the band's official Facebook page accompanied by the caption "We miss you" before adding, "While you're remembering Cliff on the 26th anniversary of his passing, give a listen to this free download from the 'Ride The Lightning' tour."

METALLICA's entire November 22, 1984 concert at at Le Riff in Toulouse, France is available at this location.

Burton, best known as a heavy metal bass player who made use of distortion and special effects, was killed in an accident on September 27, 1986 at the age of 24, four years after joining METALLICA. It was Burton's early influence that helped create METALLICA's unique musical style for which the band has become famous.

Burton's huge talent and achievements were chronicled in book form with the 2009 global publication of "To Live Is To Die: The Life And Death Of Metallica's Cliff Burton", written by U.K.-based author Joel McIver and published by Jawbone Press. The foreword has been provided by Cliff's close friend in METALLICA, Kirk Hammett. Other interviewees who spoke to McIver for this book, many for the first time on the public record, include Cliff's bass teacher Steve Doherty; legendary reporter and photographer Brian Lew; Bay Area headbanger Harald Oimoen, the subject of "The Ballad Of Harald O" by the infamous SPASTIK CHILDREN, in which Cliff played; that band's frontman Fred Cotton; EXODUS founder Gary Holt; the Metal Blade label founder Brian Slagel; photographer Ross Halfin; Cliff's first guitar tech Chuck Martin; METALLICA's first fanclub manager KJ Doughton; "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets" producer Flemming Rasmussen; the last reporter to interview Cliff, Jörgen Holmstedt; roadie and ex-METAL CHURCH guitarist John Marshall, who was also in the bus crash which killed Burton; Lennart Wennberg, the photographer at the scene of the crash; and Cliff's girlfriend for the last year of his life, Corinne Lynn. After Kirk Hammett's foreword, separate introductions are provided by a range of musicians influenced by Burton, including Mikael Åkerfeldt (OPETH), Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE), Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT), Dave Ellefson (F5/ex-MEGADETH) and a host of other musicians and writers.

An Italian-language documentary on Burton can be seen in two parts below. According to Overkill.pl, the film was produced by the Italian METALLICA chapter ZonaMetallica and was shown for the first time in 2010 at Rock'n'Roll Arena in Romagnano Sesia (near Novara) at a ZonaMetallica party.

Cliff is one of the big reasons I play bass, so I definitely support this! Tragic what happened, and they could have been so much better if he were around.

Also, Ellefson is in Megadeth again, and has been for about 2 years. Come on Blabbermouth!

I was like 12 or 13 when Cliff was killed. I was on my way to school when my buddy was walking out of the store with a daily news little article about the accident. Fucked my whole day up, didn't even go to school that day, a few of us got together to skate and blast Metallica on the boom box in tribute. I cant believe that was 26 years ago already. RIP to the major rager on the four string mother fucker!

Very, very cool of them to do this.

But remember, everyone...

According to true metal fans, the guys in Metallica are all greedy sellout assholes who enjoy fucking their fans over, especially Lars.

Wonder what he'd be like today. He had great taste in music and brought virtuosity with hardcore edge to the band that made all the difference. All this while dressing like a hippy. Definitely and interesting character.

Would he still be in this band?
Would they sound totally different if he was around?

Of course, but he gave 100% of everything he had to Metallica, both physically and mentally.

Rob is a far more accomplished bassist who can replicate Cliff's parts more accurately, but I really miss Jason's intensity, headbanging and backing vocals.

He was Metallica's sparkplug and link to the old school when the rest of the guys were pretending to be alternative in the late '90s.

I think the idea that Metallica would still be wearing denim and leather with hair down to their asses if Cliff were still alive today is HUGELY misguided.

According to the other guys in the band, Cliff's musical tastes were far more varied than the rest of them. He loved classic rock'n'roll, psychedelia, classical, Skynyrd and other Southern rock...you name it.

Metallica might have gone even MORE experimental in the '90s if Cliff had lived.

They weren't really experimental at all except for Lulu. Yes, Cliff would have pushed them in new directions, but simply stripping down your sound and mimicking the worst aspects of southern rock and arena pop isn't really being experimental.

I REMEMBER RIDING MY SKATEBOARD TO THE STORE AND MY FRIEND WAS COMING BACK ON HIS. HE STOPPED ME AND TOLD ME THE NEWS. I WAS IN TOTAL SHOCK. ALL THE TIMES I HAD SEEN HIM PLAY. THE BACKYARD PARTIES IN CASTRO VALLEY. THE MEMORIES JUST FLOWED. THEY STILL DO.

I HAD JUST SEEN METALLICA OPEN FOR OZZY AT THE COW PALACE THAT SUMMER AND CLIFF'S MONSTROUS BASS LINES FILLED THAT PLACE WITH BEAUTY AND ANGER.

I THOUGHT TO MYSELF, "THAT'S RIGHT CLIFF, SHOW THESE MOTHERFUCKERS HOW IT'S DONE".

you're lucky to have those memories of the back yard parties. would have been cool to be on the scene in the early days man, but i had two things working against me, I was only 10 or so and stuck in the midwest. \m/ \m/

I think selling Load/Reload short.

There's a lot of filler between those two albums, but if you took the absolute best songs off both, did a little editing, and gave them all Reload's meatier production, you would have one hell of an album.

I just meant "experimental" by their standards, not in general. There are some really interesting tones and textures that they try out.

Fair enough. I don't knock them for wanting to try different things at all. I just don't care for what they came up with. Everything just felt very predictable to me, especially the lyrics. The production was just fine, if a tad glossy.
