BLACK SABBATH's TONY IOMMI Voted Greatest Metal Guitarist - Sep. 26, 2012
According to The Pulse Of Radio, BLACK SABBATH's Tony Iommi has been named the greatest heavy metal guitarist of all time in a new survey posted by Gibson Guitars. The list of the top 10 metal axemen also includes METALLICA's James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, late OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist Randy Rhoads and others. Gibson said about Iommi, "Tony's dark, distinct guitar textures in BLACK SABBATH helped spearhead the heavy metal movement. 'Iron Man' and 'Paranoid' boast some of the most memorable riffs of all time, with crushingly heavy choruses. His playing is immortalized through the generations of bands that have followed."

Incredibly, Iommi had to re-learn how to play guitar as a teenager after severing two fingertips. He told The Pulse Of Radio that he's always been determined to fight his way through anything. "I've always been the same," he said. "I always have to try to get over that barrier, whatever it may be, and do it, you know. And that's continued in what I do with the music. People have said over the years, 'Well, why do you still keep playing and why do you still hold BLACK SABBATH together through the different lineups?' Because I'm determined to do it, I'm determined to carry on. And it's been with everything like that."

Iommi was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, and his treatments forced BLACK SABBATH to cancel all but two tour dates after announcing their reunion last November.

The original band, minus drummer Bill Ward, has also been working on its first studio album since 1978.

Singer Ozzy Osbourne has collaborated with three of the guitarists on the list — Iommi, Rhoads and Zakk Wylde.

Gibson's "Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists":

01. Tony Iommi (BLACK SABBATH)
02. Kirk Hammett & James Hetfield (METALLICA)
03. Randy Rhoads (OZZY OSBOURNE)
04. John Petrucci (DREAM THEATER)
05. Dimebag Darrell (PANTERA)
06. Eddie Van Halen (VAN HALEN)
07. Zakk Wylde (OZZY OSBOURNE, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY)
08. Adam Jones (TOOL)
09. Dave Murray & Adrian Smith (IRON MAIDEN)
10. George Lynch (DOKKEN, LYNCH MOB)

I hope this isn't on technical merit. I LOVE Iommi but he isn't the best guitarist on a technical level. I can play Sabbath...and I'm not that good.

Like Yngwie he may have great talent and be super fast but he lacks any kind of soul/spirit/feeling in his playing. Iommi makes it all rumble.

Your ability to "play Sabbath" is a poor indicator of where Tony Iommi ranks on this list. I've seen Youtube videos of 12 year old kids playing Eruption but that doesn't mean Eddie Van Halen is not an accomplished guitar player.

2- Shaun "Clown" Crahan
3- Dave Mustaine
4- Mike Portnoy
5- Corey Taylor
6- Serj Tankian

Oh wait sorry! That's for the "douchebag of the year" survey.

God, you people...

Are Tony's riffs easy to play? I suppose so...but TRY WRITING THEM.

Try coming up with a riff as great Children of the Grave...or Snowblind...or Black Sabbath...or...or...or any of the literally HUNDREDS of classic riffs that Tony has composed.

THAT'S what makes him great.

It's not just the playing. It's the sound and feel.

I've seen professional Sabbath tribute bands playing the material faithfully, but it's still nowhere near as good as the original.

lol its retarded when people say shit like this, as if tony iommi is the only person who couldve POSSIBLY thought of downtuning a guitar. Its the year 2012 people, give me a break! If sabbath never existed metal would STILL be here, and STILL have the exact same amount of shitty bands and the exact same amount of good bands. Anyone who argues this point is blinded by 'fanboydom'. In all honesty, this comment is technically as stupid as saying the former because both comments imply that you sumhow see alternate futures, but my point still stands.

Clearly this is a list of fan favorites and sentimental picks.

You can call tony the grandfather of metal if you'd like but I'm sorry, he just isn't the best metal guitar player out there.

James Hetfield even being mentioned is a travesty and a joke.

If you're going to include Eddie Van Halen as metal then you also need to include people like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani who would mop the floor with some of the people on this list. Eddie is hard rock but not metal.

Dimebag was a good guitarist but overrated. He died tragically as the peak of his career and a lot of people want to put him over the top because of it.

I really haven't heard anything from Adam Jones to make me think that he deserves to be on this kind of list, certainly nothing that was done with Tool warrants it.

nowadays probably you can find guitarists or musicians generally playing much more technically than most of the players in this list...SO WHAT? The point is who wrote all that shit... Yeah someone could say that quite easy to play most of Iommi's riffs. Yes genius, well the difficult part for him was to compose them not to play them....
At last a list that recognises the highest importance of Iommi for this genre! Yes he's the best guitarist of all!

Ok...Randy Rhoads, EVH, & George Lynch are NOT METAL. Same goes for some of the others you guys have mentioned...Satriani, Vai, Brian May, etc. And personally, I think technical proficiency often impedes creativity. Playing a guitar is one thing, writing music (complicated or just simple and kick ass) is another.

These lists will always look the same. They are always a "fan favourite" list, as someone said above. The featured guitarists are either in bands who were/are influential or are at least very popular. Everyone who knows metal knows that there are a hell of a lot more than 10 guitarists in death metal alone who can play the guitar miles better than anyone on this list.

That list is absurd. Iommi should be there but most of those people will not be remembered historically an any real significant way. One has to have influenced scores of players. One has to have an identity that makes them instantly recognizable. Iommi meets that bar. Eddie van Halen meets that bar.

For all of you stating that "Iommi isn't that great, I can play his riffs" need to realize that just because you can repeat famous dialog from a movie, does not make you a celebrity.

And Tony is revered because he was an INNOVATOR. All parallel universe arguments aside, the reality is that he pretty much is recognized (rightly or wrongly) as the guitarist that started this heavy metal juggernaut a-rollin, who is still active and kicking ass today. Sure there is some nostalgia involved, but when people remember the American space program, they usually remember the iconic 60's, not the mundane 90's. That's just kinda how life works.

And finally to those of you who decry that "so and so isn't metal..." YES THEY ARE! To the general population, EVH, Lynch, Rhoads, et al are indeed metal. These guitarist are not known for playing jazz, pop, country, bluegrass, classical, etc. Most of the record buying public wouldn't know the subtle nuances between hard rock and metal like us connoisseurs on Blabbermouth. Hell, most of them wouldn't know the differences between rock and metal.
And besides, those saying "he's not metal" probably wouldn't have a problem if Hendrix (another innovator) was on this list.

Let the hate commence.

confuse "greatest" with" technically proficient". Tony had both down. To me a monster riff is more fun to listen to than Yngwie Malmsteen masturbate his Stratocaster, Its so fucking hard to listen to one of his albums all the way through. There's no soul or feeling in any of it.

Tony did it first, he did it best and he did it with feeling. We OWE him a debt of gratitude for making it louder and heavier than anyone would have the nuts to do previously.

Tony is the root of all Metal. Just an opinion

I love Tool, but Adam Jones should not be on this list.

And Andreas Kisser is better than everyone on that list.

Davey and Adrian are one entry. Joined at the hips, they is! But they did it with James and Kirk, too. It's a good list, no use arguing about it. Others should be there, some left off, no big whoop.

Replace:
Zakk Wylde (love him, but he doesn't quite make the list)
Adam Jones (Tool is great, but where are the solos? N/A)
George Lynch (moments of greatness, not a catalog of them)

With:
Glenn Tipton and KK Downing
Dave Mustaine
Alex Skolnik

Still not perfect, but better.

Wait... did someone actually say that there are death metal guitarists better than John Petrucci, Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads? And to the deaf prick who said Randy isn't metal: go find the songs Believer, Diary of a Madman & Mr. Crowley, then tell me Randy wasn't metal. Also, Uli Jon Roth should be on any list that would also include Blackmore. His playing in the early Scorps days was a major influence on Eddie, Satch, Hammett and Marty Friedman, to name a handful. Michael Schenker should be near the top, along w/ Uli, IMO.!

Tipton and Downing had more consistent metal output and riffery than all other metal guys. No doubt that Iommi gets mad respect for that dark imagery and metal sound in the very early 70's, but Priest took it WAY further with more consistent albums across the years. Just listen to the guitar work on "Screaming For Vengeance", "British Steel", or "Hell Bent For Leather" albums. That's some seriously razor sharp metal guitar work couple with the very best metal songwriting courtesy of Tipton/Halford/Downing. Priest > Sabbath, let's fact it.

Definitely the most "influential" metal guitarist of all time from the biggest metal band of all time.

How can you leave Yngwie out of top 10, yet include Zukk boy in it? Even Akira of Loudness kicks Zukk boy's butt! If evh is Metal, why Page and the other Classic Rock Top 10 guys aren't on this list?

They mention 2 of his early songs which is all well and good but Tony's middle period is even better in my opinion. Songs like Sweet Leaf, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, just about any song on Master Of Reality, the list goes on...
