MÖTLEY CRÜE's NIKKI SIXX: How 'Home Sweet Home' Became Classic Song - Sep. 24, 2012
During a recent episode of "Sixx Sense", the national radio program hosted by MÖTLEY CRÜE/SIXX: A.M. bassist Nikki Sixx, Nikki revealed the "secret origin" behind the CRÜE song "Home Sweet Home". Listen to the audio clip below.

Said Nikki: "Our record company back in the day, Elektra Records, we turned in [the 1983 CRÜE album] 'Shout At The Devil' and they rejected the album. They said they didn't like it, it didn't sound like [1981's] 'Too Fast For Love', we changed the logo, we changed our look. And so we said, 'Fine. Then we'll go to another record company.' So [Elektra] put it out [after all], and it sold four million copies. Elektra was about to go bankrupt at the time, and that saved their ass. And then when our next record [1985's 'Theatre Of Pain'] got turned in, with 'Home Sweet Home' on it, they rejected that album. They said, 'This is horrible, and you have to take that song off the record. You guys aren't a ballad band.' So we did the same thing.

"We were always at war with that record company; they never really believed in us.

"And so we came out with 'Smokin' In The Boys Room' [as the first single from 'Theatre'], and that album blew up. And then we wanted to release 'Home Sweet Home' [as the next single and video], and [the record company] said, 'No way. No way.' So we funded it, we shot the video ourselves, went on MTV and the rest is history.

"But that song ['Home Sweet Home'] was never a hit single. They never worked it at radio, they never promoted the song, and if it wasn't for MTV back when they used to play videos, that song wouldn't be the song it is today. But that song's kind of like our 'Dream On' [AEROSMITH] or our 'Stairway To Heaven' [LED ZEPPELIN], right?! … 'Dream On' was not a hit single [either].

"It's interesting how a song resonates with an audience, but that definitely doesn't always resonate with business people. They look at things like AEROSMITH, and they go, 'Oh, this is your first record. You don't wanna have a ballad on it.' But that was the song — that was the jewel of that first AEROSMITH record. 'Home Sweet Home' is such a jewel in our career, just as 'Stairway To Heaven' is [for LED ZEPPELIN]. And a lot of bands have that kind of song that really connects with people, other than what they usually do, which is, maybe in our case, we're a rock band and that something was a little bit left of center."

"Home Sweet Home" charted at No. 89 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The song ranked No. 12 on VH1's chart of the greatest power ballads of all time.

"I remember like it was yesterday," said MÖTLEY CRÜE singer Vince Neil about writing the song, "sitting in the recording studio when Tommy [Lee, MÖTLEY's drummer] came up with the piano chords and I almost immediately started humming."

"American Idol" star Carrie Underwood performed her version of "Home Sweet Home" on the 2009 season of the popular television talent show.

Having the record company choose your single is like having your ex choose your next girlfriend or wife. They just don't get it.

This song may compare to Beth,it's slow and melodic not what you would expect from a metal band. But no way does this song stand up next to Stairway to Heaven or Dream On. Chicks made Home Sweet Home a monster hit for them.

Wow, I bought a lot of great albums on Electra. Thanks so much for saving their ass Nikki. I'm sure they never would have survived without you!

At this point in time Nikki is referring to, Electra was close to being bankrupt. It was well know at the time in the industry. MC and a few other bands albums did actually help save them.

Several bands tried to gain control of their catalogs at this point in time. They should have pushed harder for it, they could have made it happen.

Who said this was a classic song? Just because it old doesn't make it a classic.

Home Sweet Home was THE power ballad of the 80's. Regardless of you like Motley Crue or not, that song was and still is the "on the road touring" track and for road trips. No, they aren't Led Zeppelin or Aerosmith but for their style, I agree 100% with Nikki. It's iconic.

Umm, This may have been one of the best, but the ballad, or "power balled of the 80's was not home sweet home. Wait for it, everyone here loves this band.

But hate it or love it, Every Rose has Its Thorn, was the #1 power ballad for hair bands in the 80's by a country mile. you could not flip to a radio station and NOT hear that song. I think it was at those gay billboard charts at #1 longer than any song.

its total fluff. Its like saying "every rose has its thorn", or "Angel" are iconic. its pop rubbish. I like some Crue, but I wouldn't hang my hat on this. Its a sellout. #1 hit or not, its fluff. zero integrity. Not a classic. It just sold a lot. got lots of radio play, so did Walk Like an Egyptian, or you name the 80's pop hit.

The 80's WAS the decade of the power ballad. There were literally hundreds of similar power ballads that came out of the 80's. I wouldn't necessarily say it was THE power ballad of the 80's.

Agree that this was a great song and still is, if I'm not mistaken, the video for this song got so big on MTV that MTV had to invoke the "Crue Rule" as this was requested so much and was over played in the rotation.......ah the good old days..........

Helix-Deep Cuts the Knife was the best power ballad of the 80's.

Screw Poison and their lame pop rock. Home Sweet Home is one of my favorite songs. MC is legendary. Agree with Riot, I love Theatre of Pain.

HSH is admittedly a high score in the 80s on-the-road ballad category, but I'd say Bon Jovi wins it with Wanted Dead or Alive.
