Next Year's WACKEN OPEN AIR Is Officially Sold Out - Sep. 22, 2012
All 75,000 tickets to next year's edition of the Wacken Open Air festival have been sold — a little more than a month after being made available. This marks the eighth time in a row that Wacken Open Air is sold out and it is the event's fastest sellout ever.

The next Wacken Open Air will take place August 1-3, 2013 in Wacken, Germany.

The festival billing is shaping up as follows:

AMORPHIS
ANTHRAX
ARCH ENEMY
ASP
BOB WAYNE
CANDLEMASS
DEEP PURPLE
DIE KASSIERER
DORO
ESKIMO CALLBOY
HAGGARD
HATE SQUAD
IHSAHN
LEPROUS
NIGHTWISH
RAGE
RAMMSTEIN
SABATON
SCOTT IAN
(ANTHRAX) (spoken word)
SOILWORK
SONATA ARCTICA
SUBWAY TO SALLY

Wacken Open Air was first held in 1990 as a small event for local German bands. By 1998 the event had become the major festival on the European metal calendar and has included over 70 bands from all over Europe, North America and Australia.

Wacken Open Air is usually held at the beginning of August and lasts three days, during which the festival-goers camp on several large camping grounds surrounding the actual festival area. The 70 or more bands perform across four separate stages over the course of the event.

Wacken Open Air, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2009, was honored with a Live Entertainment Award in 2008 in the "Festival Of The Year" category. This award recognizes distinguished achievements in live entertainment and is given out by Live Entertainment Award (LEA) committee.

I wished I lived over in Europe. I have wanted to see Rammstein live for a long time. I missed the seattle gig and still have not gotten over it.

Never been to Wacken, or any multiple-day music festival that involves camping.

Put it this way, I take a shower every day. Actually, twice, most often. Sometimes three times. Obsessive compulsive? Maybe.

But the first thought that comes to me is: what the fuck does it smell like in the crowd on day three? After a quick google search, it would appear that showering and bathing is available, but not necessarily taken up by all attendees. There is talk of pity for other commuters who are sharing trains and buses with metalheads who are returning home after the festival.

Then there's the whole "taking a shit" question. Incredibly some say they just dont take a shit for three days. I dont even like taking a shit at work (the people I work with are disgusting scum), and I've always lived in fear of having to suddenly take a shit at even one day festivals.

Yeah I know, I'm weak. I'm not metal enough. Go fuck yourself.

But it's like that Indonesian crust-punk scrubbing incident from earlier this year, where they chucked them in a river because they stank so bad. I actually thought the authorities were doing the right thing.

It sounds good on paper, but in reality 3 days of camping on top of dirt, humid/wet weather, and walking an entire football field length just to get from the stage to the tent, overall it is VERY draining and nearly impossible to catch all the bands. On the other hand - if you go with lots of friends it helps a lot. Personally, being stuck with thousands of strangers - many of whom prefer not to speak English, is not as fun as it sounds. Unless you are just a very easy going person who can stumble around wasted and meet people all day long for days straight. Personally that gets old after 24 hours. Also, the dollar is very weak to the Euro right now. Who the hell can afford it anymore? Also, more posers go every year, that is why it is so big. Not saying all who go are posers, but guaranteed more posers go every year and that is why it sells out. Stop kissing ass on Europe and start YOUR OWN Metal fest in your own town. Tired of hearing how "America sucks." You know, the only reason it sucks is because all the people who can afford to fly to Wacken are too fucking lazy to start their own Metal fest (or they just don't like Metal enough to try)

It's obvious metal is mainly a caucasian thing. We do not have enough caucasians here in America to support something that would draw 75,000 people. Here in Los Angeles, we used to have the greatest metal radio station in the U.S. called "KNAC". Today, there are absolutely no metal stations in L.A. at all. It takes paid advertising to support a radio station. We do not have a metal radio station because there are not be enough white metal-heads to listen to it. Latino radio stations thrive here because there are millions of listeners to the station. This is exactly why europe gets all the great festivals.

Learn to take a shit without sitting down. Problem solved.

Also Glenhetfield you're full of shit. How can you blame foreign people for not speaking English? Maybe that would be the chance to make an effort yourself and learn something new, you lazy arse.

Been there once in 2001. It is a must-see, at least you should go there once. This proves the music scene is very healthy nowadays, that we are the most loyal fans in the world.

...as well as Brutal Assault (2011), as well as ProgPower USA twice (2002 & 2008), and myself being from the USA (Miami, FL), I will be the first to say the trip to Wacken is worth it.

Is it draining, yes it is, but that is part of the experience, like a phoenix dying and being resurrected from the ashes stronger than ever, and god knows A LOT of us need something like that in our lives.

As for people not speaking english

..., you're in their country, meaning its their house and their rules. There is a huge # of people who actually speak English very well, and as long as your respectfu and patient. Plus it helps if you speak a 2nd language (for me its broken Spanish, but I get by fine).

So my suggestion: do it cuz it will be the experience of a lifetime.
