MIKE PORTNOY, BILLY SHEEHAN, TONY MACALPINE, DEREK SHERINIAN To Play One-Off U.S. Show - Sep. 19, 2012
Drummer Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD), bassist Billy Sheehan (STEVE VAI, DAVID LEE ROTH), guitarist Tony MacAlpine (neo classical-metal style, STEVE VAI) and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (DREAM THEATER, PLANET X, BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION) will join forces this fall, embarking on an extended tour of Europe and Asia. The virtuoso band will play an all-instrumental set consisting of material from each of their solo records and their previous collaborations as well as classic instrumental covers and extended solo spots.

Immediately following the European/Asian trek, the group will play a one-off U.S. show on November 18 at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York City

Tickets for the concert go on sale this Friday, September 21 at 10 a.m.

Portnoy formed the lineup to perfom at two drum events at the NAMM show last January (footage below). Due to overwhelming response, that band has decided to take their show on the road.

"I knew when assembling this lineup that it would be a magical musical experience that would be a blast for us as well as the fans! I can't wait to play again with these tremendous musicians and share the experience with you all at these special shows!" says Portnoy.

This will rape anything Dream Theatre's doing lately.

It makes me want to see it.

More times than not a singer holds good musicians back.

Buddy of mine worked at the Baked Potato in Studio City. My band used to stop in on our way into town when we'd play L.A. So one afternoon we make this ritual stop and of course the place is empty in the middle of the day, but there's this brutha just tearing the piano a new asshole, he's a dang virtuoso.
'who's that?!?'
'tony mcalpine.'

The guy is unbelievably talented - guess that's why he got tapped to be in this talent freak-show tour, huh?

the upbeat section of that clip with guitar and synth solos (starts at 2:22) is wicked. reminds me of some of the ripping instrumental passages on change of seasons.

Interesting - half the band were fired from Dream Theater.

This where Portnoy should have started and stayed. Adrenaline Mob is a joke. Flying Colors is a nice side gig but a tad easy. Assuming Portnoy can keep his mouth shut (what am I saying?!?), this group holds tremedous promise and I'd love to hear an album's worth of weird shit. Somehow I doubt this has a chance of lasting.

Tony MacAlpine is a freaking genius and a great player. Go grab Maximum Security and listen how guitar should be played.

I don't care about Sherinian, and there are plenty of drummers that I like as much as Portnoy. But any band with Tony Macalpine and Billy Sheehan is gonna be at the top of my must-see list. Let's hope this turns into an extended project of some sort.

Macalpine is the most under-rated musician on the planet. He is on the same level as Vai and Satriani, but doesn't seem to get his due. This is the type of project Pornoy should be doing, instead of his other time killing projects.

Man, They should get Ray Alder from Fates Warning and make an album. That would be bad ass!
