MICK MARS Says 1994's Self-Titled CD Is MÖTLEY CRÜE's Best Album - Sep. 19, 2012
On September 18, Jacky Bam Bam of the 93.3 WMMR radio station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania conducted an interview with MÖTLEY CRÜE guitarist Mick Mars. You can now listen to the chat at this location.

Asked about MÖTLEY CRÜE's 1994 self-titled album, which featured John Corabi on lead vocals instead of Vince Neil, Mars said, "I thought that was probably… To me, and I can only speak for me, I think that was probably the best album we've done. Musical-wise, the songs, I felt, were strong. And just musically, to me, it was, I guess, my BEATLES 'White Album'; that's kind of how I feel about that one. I'm not saying that any of my other albums are crummy or anything like that — I love every album that we did — but that one just has a special thing for me."

Mars also spoke about his long-rumored solo album of R&B, soul, and blues songs, which he had asked American R&B and soul singer-songwriter Macy Gray to guest on. "I would love to have Macy Gray sing stuff for me," he said. "What I have in mind is not like your shuffle beat kind of blues, it's more of an Etta James kind of blues. If you listen to the first Paul Butterfield album, with Sam Lay playing drums, there's not a shuffle in it. He takes the drums and he does a whole different thing with them. I want lots of movement in the rhythm, so you can't help but move. Like a Macy Gray voice on it, or Andy Garcia — people like that are, to me, they're fabulous singers. Not that I wanna do a hodgepodge of singers and stuff, but to [have them] guest on a couple of songs would be very cool."

But For Me-Too Fast For Love- Is A Perfect Punk Hard Rock Record- The Sound Was Raw And The Vocals Where Spot-On. Almost Every Song Kicks Ass. I Love Cranking That Record Up To 11- The Corabi Record #2 But It's Close- I Love That Record AS Well.

he and everybody else who claims that only do so because it is the least popular among crue fans and was a complete bust sales wise. it may have been a great record but it was a crue record in name only! I love corabi's voice just not singing for a band like the crue. the songs were nothing the like sound that made the band rich and famous to begin with which is why fans rejected it. they may have gotten away with replacing vince had they made a record that sounded anything the crue but did not and fans like me never bothered to buy it. does not mean I did not hear it or like it but it was called motley crue and it wasn't. besides what do you expect him or the other guys who made it to say? we made a record that sucked? let me know when any band does that!

I see your point, and I actually agree to a certain degree, but, because all of their record have such varying sounds within the rock genre (TFFL was punk/pop/rock, Shout was hard rock and Dr. Feelgood was mainstream rock) I still think it is their best release overall, and a big reason for that, IMO, is John's participation.

Let's just say all AC/CD without Bon isn't AC/DC or All Black Sabbath without Ozzy isn't Black Sabbath. Just a stupid and old argument. It's all Crue with the musical freedon not having Vince around to narrow what they could do.

The guitarst for the band has come out and publicly stated it's his favorite record. What don't you understand? Fans of the band already know of the album,do you really believe their is going to be a big jump in sales of a 13 year old album that did not sell to the fan base in the first place?

Cool to hear Mick praise the S/T album. It's prob my fave as well - although TFFL is up there, too. I really wonder what more MC could have done if Corabi stayed on board. He blows Vince away in every sense possible.

They are different, all 3 pretty good in their own terms. I also like a lot those first 2, I played them until the stylus almost went through the other side, mostly TFFL (a hungry/raw album). However, IMO, as a hard rocking/heavy/fat sounding record, this album just destroys, and overall, to me, their best work. Maybe as others said they should have changed the name instead releasing it as a MC album, that would have made a difference back then; I'm afraid we'll never know.

I'm proud of Mick for having the balls to say what he feels. Vince will always be the lead singer of Motley Crue until the band folds, due to the almighty dollar. It's like an open marraige between the band members. Due to public outcry, Neil had to return for Generation Swine. That's what the fan base demanded. That doesn't take away the fact, that the self titled album w\ Corabi has the band playing at its peak. Tommy and Mick's playing are standout. John Corabi's vocals really do stand the test of time. 18 years later.

Shout at the Devil is one of the biggest albums of my youth. That album is so raw, and so perfect; bulletproof! The energy that they had on that album was never matched again thereafter. And as Mick said, not that all their other albums were "crummy", Shout at the Devil was just that good!

Shout at the Devil aside....I was really surprised that they never re-recorded the self-titled album with Vince. Especially since they left it in print. They must have actually liked the outcome as opposed to the masses that panned it.

I agree Shout kicks ass...I read a story about the Crue in Hit Parader and bought the record the day it came out, but I think the playing and songwriting are better on the self titled record, which I believe, if it had been released in the late 80's instead of the mid-90's, would have sold very well and Vince might have never been brought back in!

Are they trying to sell overstock of that record?
Is he trying to make people realize how talented Corabi is?
Is he telling the truth and really appreciates what he did there?

TFFL was great and SATD was a masterpiece (at that point in time, anyway). After that, I quit paying attention to them. Mick is the only sane guy in the band, so maybe I'll go back and listen to this one.

Mick to me is the musical glue/intelligence in that band. I only liked their first 3 albums but will definitely give the self titled another chance in his honor. I haven't heard it in ages.

Let's get a solo album going Mr. Mars! Unlike any of the crap the other 3 have done I'll bet it would have some actual substance.

I'm not a huge Mötley Crüe fan. I'll admit that I have never really given them much of a shot. I have SATD and TFFL but in my opinion, I just didn't love them when they came out. And in recent times, with the amount of bullshit that comes out of Vince's mouth and the slowly declining quality performances I haven't really felt the need to revisit their history.

But Mick Mars I have respect for. He seems like a dude who has kept it together unlike his bandmates and a guy who's modest about his talent. And for that, and as this is his opinion, I'll give the S/T album a shot.

I think the first two albums are actually better and at the time when they came out (most of you weren't even born lol) I was in high school - and they were monumental, huge, and game changers in hard rock and metal. Nobody sounded like them, nobody had that attitude, and few rocked harder. It was a different time and place. The NWOBHM and European hard rock was huge during this time (Maiden, Priest, Scorpions, Def Leppard, Krokus) and we now had another American band bringing it. Sure Van Halen were already massive, but the Crue signaled a new path for heavy music that was coming, it unfortunately turned into hair metal, but at the beginning of that trend it was exciting and different.

I like the Corabi album as well. I've seen Crue a few times in the early days (Shout at the Devil tour - opening for Ozzy on that infamous tour and then solo a few months later headlining a little theater) and they were awesome in those days. Blew Ozzy away. But I did see them on the tour with Corabi, they did a radio festival and I knew a local DJ and got free tickets up close to the stage. I remember walking out and telling my wife that they were on top of their game and that was the best I'd seen the Crue - and that I didn't think it would last. I was mostly right, I even said Corabi was to good for the Crue and would leave and move on to something bigger and better. He left and did nothing as good again lol.

I was in high school too, and you're completely correct when you say that when those albums came out you could tell that something different was happening. I've been always a huge VH fan and when they came out (MC) there was a buzz everywhere, somehow everybody made space for them among AC/DC, Scorps, Maiden, Judas, VH, Ozzy, Saxon, etc. Great times where those.

I wish they were putting out a new Lp. this year, but they aren't. s/t CRUE record has that great CRUE guitar sound and Corabi fits nicely with it, great bass and drums, too, on that one and yes it's nice to hear him defend it finally!

I still love the self-titled album with John Corabi. Musically, it's pretty epic and way cool. Had the band gone under a different name, I think the album would have done much better than it did. The accompanying 'Quaternary' E.P. was also awesome. Mick plays some mean blues on his solo song "Bittersuite". An underrated mofo on the guitar, Mick Mars is.

I used to flat out love Motley back in the day, but other than a couple tracks, the music just doesn't hold up anymore. All of the records are very much of their time and just don't have the substance to remain vital. Add the fact that they can't play very well live and I just don't get how they are still so much of a draw.

Too Fast is still in heavy rotation around here. The punk and the cheesy pop touches are something they never had again. It was probably unintentional, but it was brilliant.

I agree with Mick on many levels, and Corabi has the way better voice..and to the guy up above..have u watched Vince sing live in the last 5-10 years?? VOICE OF CRUE or not..he misses words, sounds like hes got helium in is voice and theres no melody..nothing..and for the record he does skip lyrics live..its been very well documented. Watch Corabi Live he doesn't miss a beat or LYRICS.. that being said I love Vince love crue and the S/T album is stellar,up there with Shout and Too fast..and I think Theater is great too..not bashing Vince I am a fan,but when u cant get the words right or skip them give it up or do what halford does..TELEPROMPTER PEOPLE ARE PAYING $$$ they should be able to hear the lyrics..\m/

Say what you like. I have to admit its one of my favs too. Has nothing to do with its sales either because I am an old school crue fan of the true lineup. But the heaviness of that album is just so cool.

I was a big fan of the Scream too which made the whole period sh*t.

Not now, because we all know Vince is struggling to sing but at the time, Id be interested to have heard Vince sing some of those songs. His range would certainly still have nailed it.
