NIGHTWISH Mainman Says Band Has Received Criticism For 'Imaginaerum' Musical Direction - Sep. 17, 2012
NIGHTWISH songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen recently spoke to Artisan News about the band's North American tour; how their latest album, "Imaginaerum", has been received; and the forthcoming premiere of the "Imaginaerum" movie. You can now watch the report below.

"We got some criticism for 'Imaginaerum', saying that this is no more metal, it's just soundtrack, there's too much orchestra, all that," Tuomas revealed. "There is a lot of that; that's what we wanted to do with this album, 'cause it's a soundtrack for a movie. Maybe next album will be total black metal without any orchestras or keyboards or totally acoustic. Who knows?! The main thing is that you always need to do what feels right."

NIGHTWISH's long-awaited "Imaginaerum" film — based on the band's album of the same name — will be released theatrically in Finland on November 23.

The movie will have its premiere on November 10 at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, where the audience will be treated to both a full-scale NIGHTWISH concert and the first-ever public screening of the movie.

Eagerly anticipated around the world, "Imaginaerum" creates a musical fantasy world in the vein of David Lynch, Neil Gaiman, and Cirque du Soleil. The movie is an innovative mixture of story-telling and music, an extraordinary tale of the power of imagination… and what's ultimately important in life.

Shot and post-produced in Canada, the movie was directed by Stobe Harju and produced by Solar Films, and features appearances by all NIGHTWISH members. The screenplay is based on a wild vision that Tuomas Holopainen, the mastermind of the band, devised after the album "Dark Passion Play" came out in 2007.

The official soundtrack of the movie, "Imaginaerum By Nightwish: The Score", will be released on the day before the premiere — Friday, November 9. The album features 13 grandiose, unreleased re-interpretations of "Imaginaerum" tracks by Petri Alanko.

The "Imaginaerum" album was released in the U.S. on January 10 via Roadrunner Records.

...not only did the vocal level drop to forgettable depths with Anette, but also the musical side went down. Sure, the albums Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum are done professionally, imaginatively and with grandiose proportions...but there are no great, memorable songs like they had with Tarja!!! And with Tarja on the helm, they had one of the greatest frontwomen of all time, her vocals and appearance are priceless.

To each his own, I think musically they improved in leaps and bounds simply because they weren't bound by Tarja's voice anymore - with Annette the songs are far more diverse, and still catchy and memorable as hell. Personally I couldn't stand to listen to Tarja for more than a few songs at a time.

I like both Anette and Tarja, so, whatever. Dark Passion Play was a masterpiece where each track was really great, and the album was hard to top or surpass. Imaginaerum was good but not as good, not by a mile. They did such a good job with DPP, and the new one is a "soundtrack". I haven't given hopes though!

I love both eras of Nightwish (Tarja era and Anette era) for different reasons and have been pleased with the progress the band has made in the past few years and Tarja's progress with her solo work.

DDP was a great album overall and while Imaginaerum is a very well done album, it's not a favorite of mine. There are some wonderful tracks and some really awful ones, very few lay in the middle range of so-so in my opinion. I'll be interested to see the movie when it's available and am curious to see what path they take for the next album.

Imaginaerium was a bit of a letdown at first listen, but when you dig into it there are some good songs mainly towards the end, tracks 9 on. Also I want my tears back is killer. Too much orchestration though, and it sounds too much like a soundtrack. And then it says above there is an official soundtrack coming out with reinterpretations!!! Then why the hell did they do what they did on this record???

Why did they have to replace"dead to the world" and "scaretale" with "escapist" and "siren", not to mention playing the worst ballad of all time, "slow love slow"?

I'm sure the next album will be raw Black Metal that puts Darkthrone to shame. Give me a break.

Great band though!! Love the last two albums!

Used to enjoy this band, but Tara's solo material is better than the crap Nightwish is putting out these days. Annette is so vanilla and I miss the powerful operatic sound the band used to have. Dark Passion Play was just plain awful. Slow, Love, Slow... Really? Lounge jazz? Please stop trying to be artsy.

The last album was alright, I didn't think their direction changed much at all really, they've been going down this road for a while now.
