ANTHRAX Drummer Wanted To Make 'Worship Music' A Double Album - Sep. 15, 2012
Roxwel conducted an interview with ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante at the end of last year. The chat has now been posted on YouTube and can be seen below.

Asked about ANTHRAX's current lineup is holding up after the band went through so many singer changes between 2005 and 2010, Benante said, "Actually, for the first time in a long time, it feels nice; it's settled. When we're together, it's a hell of a lot better than we are when we are apart."

He added, "When we're together, we're always together — hanging, talking… It's good. That's all I can say. I'm sure other bands can relate to things that I say. When you're five together, it's like you're five brothers, and sometimes, one day, one of those guys will come in, he's having a bad day, it kind of affects the whole vibe. And by the end of the night, it's done, it's finished — you know, goodbye. And everything is OK."

Benante also spoke about ANTHRAX's latest studio album, "Worship Music", which saw the light of day in September 2011 — eight years after its predecessor, "We've Come For You All". Singer Joey Belladonna's return to the band prompted some of the songs originally recorded with previous vocalist Dan Nelson to be re-crafted with fresh lyrics or tweaked to better suit his overall vibe and energy. Some of the songs were completely replaced with brand-new songs and all have Belladonna's inimitable vocal stamp on them.

"It's hard to take these songs and not listen to it as a whole piece," Charlie said. "Because there's thrash elements on the record, there's definitely newer-sounding songs on the record. But there is a reason for some of the thrashier songs, and that's just what we were feeling — a lack of it. So those songs just naturally came out. Like 'Earth On Hell', I remember having this idea for that song in my head, and it was just this fast riff. And I was, like, 'Woah, here we go. I'm glad it's going back that way.' But it wasn't intentional; it just happened that way."

On the topic of whether there were any leftover songs that didn't make "Worship Music", Benante said, "There was quite a bit of material [written for the album], but believe me, there was a lot more [that we could have recorded and released]. I really wanted to make it a double record, but we didn't go that way. But I had enough material to make it that much. But, you know, we kind of said, 'Let's just concentrate on one and then not take so long to do another one.' So that was fine; that was fine with me. And maybe a double album is too much to absorb right away, you know what I mean?! But I also felt, 'Well, shit, it's been a long time since our last record. Maybe we should give them as much as we possibly could.'"

He added, "Anyway, we got it down to, like, 13 songs that we felt really strong about. And that was it. And again, the record didn't really start to take shape until [the fall of 2010]."

Wow. As bad as one album was, I'd hate to see how thin they stretched those idea over 2 discs.

Great idea! Out of 2 discs they might have been able to mine enough songs for one really mediocre EP!

Maybe the other album would have been spoken word. These guys talk too much...I wish they'd just shut up and play! BTW, it was a great album the way it was.

so they're going to be like Megadeth, where they churn out mediocre albums year after year instead of handpicking the best ones from the different sessions and releasing one awesome album.

...was a kick-ass record. The return of Joey was epic. It made the whole record worth while. Definitely the best album of last year. AND definitely better than the last few they put out with Bush, or anything they put out with Bush for that matter. Joey rules!!

I agree, but Worship Music was just the right length. I hate it when bands make albums with 13 songs and you get bored 75% of the way through it. It is better that they saved those songs for the follow-up.

Worship Music has a handful of really good Anthrax songs on it, but come on, We've Come For You All still blows it out of the water.

do not deserve to be a part of the Big 4. Their last album was tired. They have never written a good album start-to-finish. More filler than a 1970s Austin Allegro.

lol "Big 4". Anthrax could have eaten Taco Bell for a month and shit into a drum and it still would have sounded better than the last Metalicca album.

I agree on the big 4 thing, they have NOT been consistent, BUT their new album is awesome and it sounds fresh, apart from the fact that Joey is back.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, that's true. But my opinion is that if you think Worship Music sucks, you're not into metal.

I'd probably be into a lot more metal like I used to be if anyone but Wolf Hoffmann could write good songs instead of releasing drivel like Worship Music or the last Dave Mundane album.

You mean that derivative mid-tempo alt. rock album is metal? The only thing I like on "Worship" is the snare sound and Caggiano's leads on a few of the songs, the rest if old, tired, boring 3 power chord crap.

Someone above mentioned Accept - I take their two new albums with a lot more enthusiasm than this.

While we're discussing Anthrax double album - they could've done one better, record one with Joey and the other one with Bush :)

Scott Ian is a total prick who thinks he is some huge rock star. He acts all 'cool' on camera but in real life those that have actually met him and hung out in the same circle as him know he is a little bitch who wants Phil Anselmos cock in his mouth so badly he had to hire singers that tried to imitate him

Joey should have never agreed to bail these assholes out and come sing for them. If it wasn't for Joey this band would be long gone by now. I hope at least Joey gets some cash out of this as he is the voice of Anthrax and should have never been fired (twice)

Hopefully they bring back Dan Spitz and do a proper thrash album next time around

There probably is some truth in Scott Ian wishing that Anthrax's career arc of the 90s was at all anything like that of Pantera.

I think Anthrax made some good music in the 90s, but they seemed to loose a bit of direction and they definitely lost some of their focus.

Then i gave the album a chance and was blown away. Best album they have done in over 20 years. Having Joey back is the best thing to happen to them. John Bush is awesome, but i never liked him in Anthrax.

Hopefully Joey stays on. His vocals on WM are the best on any Anthrax album. Just like Bruce Dickinson, he seems to have gotten better with age. John Bush has a powerful voice but for me it's just too bland to sustain an entire album.

He's got better with autotune and pitch shifting, some of these songs are not even in his range, the vocals were tuned down to accomodate it, if you know what to listen for you could actually hear some of the artifacts.

The way I hear it - half of the album (slow to midtempo boring songs in vein of "Only") were written for Bush, while the rest must've been for Dan Nelson and poor Joey had to fit a square peg into a round hole. Killer job on the production though, especially the vocal editing.
