CAGGIANO: JOEY Coming Back Into Band Is Best Thing That Could Have Happened To ANTHRAX - Sep. 14, 2012
Ruben Mosqueda of Oregon Music News recently conducted an interview with ANTHRAX guitarist Rob Caggiano. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Oregon Music News: When singer Joey Belladona and guitarist Dan Spitz reunited with ANTHRAX in 2005, how hard was it for you to step aside?

Caggiano: That was a weird time. I didn't understand what was going on, to be honest. I don't think that [former ANTHRAX singer] John [Bush] knew what was going on either. That was basically sprung on us. I think that needed to happen and ANTHRAX needed to go down that road. I've said this in interviews before: I think that things happen for a reason. I think this band needed to get through all that stuff that it's been through to get where we are today, you know what I mean?

Oregon Music News: While out of the band for that period of time you stayed busy with other things.

Caggiano: Yeah, I did. I dove into my production career. I did a bunch of records. In fact, I recorded an album with CRADLE OF FILTH that was nominated for a Grammy. As you know, I've been producing and writing for years; I just like making music — I like making noise. When that ANTHRAX reunion went down, I shifted gears and went down a different road for a little bit.

Oregon Music News: The reunion worked its course you found yourself back in ANTHRAX. You had a new singer briefly and then Joey came back. You must be absolutely stoked to be a part of this.

Caggiano: I think it's great. Joey's sounding pretty good and we're proud of the new album. A lot of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears went into that record. I think that Joey coming back into the band is the best thing that could have happened to ANTHRAX.

Oregon Music News: Apparently you've recorded some covers over the course of the past few months. There's been speculation that you'll release either an EP or use the covers for an expanded version of "Worship Music". Is there any truth to this? And what is the intended use for these songs?

Caggiano: To be totally honest with you, I have no idea! [laughs] There's been talk back and forth. There has been talk of them being used for a re-release of the album or an EP or something else. I really don't know. We do have various tunes that are in various stages of completion. They are very cool and they all sound killer. They are bands that inspired us over the years. It's definitely cool. ANTHRAX doing cover songs has always been part of what ANTHRAX does. We have two covers in the set right now with "Got The Time" and "Anti-Social".

Oregon Music News: Not to go into details, but how is drummer Charlie Benante doing?

Caggiano: I just saw Charlie the other day; he seems to be doing well. As you know, he went through some weird stuff. He hurt his hand and some other crappy stuff happened. [Charlie and his wife were arrested on July 27 in Indiana for domestic battery in front of a child. — Ed.] He's hanging in there.

Oregon Music News: So at this point is Charlie expected to do this tour?

Caggiano: I can't really say for sure. I believe that is the plan. [But] I don't know for sure.

Agreed 100%.

People or fans who disagree with this (with all respect to Bush and 'the other guy'), are dillusional.

Anthrax was better with Belladonna back then, and today again is better with Belladonna

I don't know why, but that picture makes me think of Silvio from the Sopranos

The new album is great, but I think they have some unfinished business with Neil Turbin.

I'm not trying to read too much into it, but when beanie boy says his singer sounds 'pretty good'...I'm not feeling a lot of enthusiasm there.

Yeah I caught the "pretty good" thing as well. Maybe he just doesn't articulate himself that well, but that doesn't sound very enthused. But who can blame them. Anthrax has a stormy past with singers. In the few years prior they had their issues with Bush and Nelson so to some extent, they probably felt like if its not Joey, there's nothing else. Thats not a slam against Joey in any way, its just about Anthrax's issues with singers, not the singers themselves.

I'm in a good mood so I'll say that caggiano's guitar playing is "pretty good".
In fact, Anthrax is "pretty good".

Belladonna fits the band more in the style of music they are known for, Bush made Anthrax sound like Armored Saint. John belongs w/ them. Just glad Joey is singer once again, Worship Music is awesome!

Bush era Anthrax just didn't sound like Anthrax, they just sounded like generic late 90s metal at its most bandwagon jumping crap.Joey's voice defined the band in the 80s and made them unique among their peers because he could sing! Its no surprise they disappeared into near obscurity with Bush and are popular again now Joey's back.

They were one of my favourite bands in the 80s, one of the first bands i ever saw and like everyone else i was sceptical when they got a new singer, i thought well, that's the end of them.
I loved them with Joey.

But the fact is Sound Of White Noise is as good as anything they have ever done and most of the fair weather fans fucked off without giving it a listen cos a lot of them were narrow minded pinheads that forgot too easily that you whenever you saw a picture of Anthrax, one of them would be in a Public Enemy, Fishbone or Sinead O'Connor shirt. They were a damn sight more open minded than any other metal band of the era and that's part of what made them better than nearly everyone else.

To moan that they weren't a true thrash band from 93-03 is to totally miss the point of the band, Anthrax were and remain always more than just that. I'm The Man and Bring The Noize were nothing at all to do thrash or even metal, they were just great records and all part of their makeup.

They did a Joe Jackson song as a single for fuck's sake!

Another fact is that Bush has a better voice and is also a better singer than Joey. If you can't recognise that you're a misty eyed nostalgist or haven't got a clue about singing.

And if you only ever listen to metal in 2012 you're dull and if you only listen to thrash you're just plain fucking retarded.

I wasn't enthusiastic about Joey's return but he's phenomenal on the new album, he sing's better on that album than he ever has in his life and i love the fact that i was wrong to be sceptical.
I also love that people are coming back to the band but i'm tired of all the Bush bashing from fair weather fans. If you ignore those years you're missing out on two of Anthrax's greatest albums (WCFYA being the other).

Like i said, Anthrax for life.

Belladonna IS Anthrax. John Bush made Anthrax sound like a poppy version of "ArmoredThrax".

And to quote the late great Slim Pickens. - "Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones."

The winter hat wearing thing is sort of odd. I saw them at a summer festival two summers back. It was fucking hot and humid and he still had that thing on.

Maybe it's just the truth, no? Belladonna is pretty good, I'll give him that. The anthrax stuff with him sounds dated, not to mention Ian's pop culture lyrics that kinda dates all that early stuff. John's stuff stands the test of time better, sown is the best thing they've ever done and I've been a fan since spreading. Songwriting is great, it's heavy as fuck and the lyrics have more of a personal thus timeless quality to them. Tell me you don't cringe and roll up your car windows during cry for the Indians!! Come on!!
