MTV: 'Headbangers Ball' Will Continue As Online Destination Without JOSE MANGIN - Sep. 13, 2012
A spokesperson for MTV has denied a claim by current "Headbangers Ball" host Jose Mangin (pictured below) that the Viacom Inc.-owned cable channel is pulling the plug on the show because it no longer supports heavy metal.

In a recent interview with Horns Up Rocks!, Mangin revealed that the decision to kill the currently web-only series wasn't about saving money. "Right now, it doesn't really cost [MTV] anything, 'cause I do it. I host it, produce it, edit it . . . all myself," he said. "But I guess it's just the odd man out of their lineup. They do a lot of hip-hop, and they support that music fully. They used to support rock."

He continued: "Some day, somebody will be there and they'll be, like, 'Why aren't we doing something with rock music?' Somebody will some day say that. But in the meantime, I've been honored to do it for four years. Just to say those words . . . means a lot for me, 'cause since I was a little kid, that was my show."

In response, MTV released the following statement to SPIN: "MTV is committed to the 'Headbangers Ball' franchise and can confirm that it will continue as an online destination with its hub remaining on MTV2.com. The company's deal with Jose Mangin has concluded. However, MTV will continue to program a weekly playlist for fans of the genre."

Mangin, who took over as the official "Ball" host in July 2011, is planning to launch a new show called "Hard Attack TV", which he says will be "an extension of 'Headbangers Ball'."

"Headbangers Ball" began on MTV on April 18, 1987, playing heavy metal and hard rock music videos late at night, from both well-known and more obscure artists. The show offered (and became famous because of) a stark contrast to Top 40 music videos shown during the day.

However, with the mainstream rise of alternative rock and rap music in the 1990s, the relevance of "Headbangers Ball" came into question, and the show was ultimately canceled in 1995. Over eight years later, as new genres of heavy metal were gaining a commercial foothold and fan interest became unavoidable, the program was reintroduced on MTV2. It has remained in varying degrees on the network.

Jose is like a younger, "hip" version of Eddie Trunk. They both come across as annoying, but they both have very good intentions when it comes to bringing hard rock and heavy metal to media channels. Hope for the best for his new show.

All the metal DJs have a slight annoyance about them. Every city has their version of metal shop, and they always introduce the bands at the gigs, and they usually come off as slightly egotistical and wanting to be respected as much as the bands they are introducing. Funny thing is, the guys that were the metal shop up here in seattle, are nowhere to be found. Fuck em. They're going nowhere. Self-important losers with a dream.

Every HBB VJ has been annoying. Curry was probably the most neutral, Rachtman was definitely annoying but grew on you after awhile. Didn't Jamie Jasta host it when it came back for a bit, also annoying.

The time for Headbanger's Ball has come and gone. You can see metal shows and videos all over the net. Back in the day it was something you did as a metal fan to see stuff you wouldn't normally see on MTV and get to hear/see some new stuff. Other than Headbanger's there was really just college radio at the time. There really were not a lot of options to hear stuff unless you had access to a great indie record store or got involved in tape trading.

I particularly remember Welcome To the Jungle premièring on HBB and lots of people talking about it on Monday in school. Those were fun times, but it's in the past.

Glad MTV is keeping the Ball alive. Hey Jose, stick with you lame day job over at Sirius and keep playing your shitty metalcore bands. Boneyard > your shitty channel.

Isn't MTV now all about Jersey Shore, Pregnant teens and 30 gays and a chick shows?

Jose is well intentioned I don’t doubt that. He loves the music I love; my Problem is his delivery. It’s really like listening to someone that is still 16. I don’t need the faux bad ass voice inflection every time he speaks the word “PanterA” and I don’t need the obligatory “F Yeah” every third sentence. I really hate when people like this play up to the stereotypes of us like that. We don’t need it. We are not all hyped out morons that can’t finish a sentence without cursing. I also don’t need to hear how he wants his pre teen daughter to watch horror movies with him. It’s again just playing up to the knucklehead stereotypes that I can’t stand. Painful.

I agree and it seems like a lot of the other DJs mimic the way he talks. A lot of them I cannot tell the differnce. They also say HELL YEAH all the time.

On a side note the guy also sounds very lispy and feminine. I think he has a wife and kids which was a huge surpise!

Wow, Jose is a trip to listen to on the radio simply because you can tell he has the passion and love for the music. He is different than any other crappy DJ spouting about their boring lives and opinions on crap I don't care about. He is just all metal all the time. All the bands love him for it too because he carries the flag for all of them.

If you didn't get that then I hear Justin Bieber has a new album coming out. You can't possibly be metal if you didn't get it.

Riki Rachtman was actually pretty cool. He SUCKED on Headbangers Ball because he didn't really have control over things. He was told what to play and what to say.

But if you ever heard him on KNAC, he RULED! His radio show there was amazing! Amazing setlists, great, insightful interviews. Great guests. He really did know his stuff.

I'm an old timer as far as Headbangers Ball goes (I remember watching it way back when they’d put an MTV VJ in a leather jacket for a half hour and play “metal” videos) and haven’t watched it in at least 20 years.

I recently watched a clip of this Jose dude interviewing Tom Araya. If that guy (Jose) is like that all of the time then dropping him is one of the very few incredibly wise moves MTV has made since the 80s. He’s one of those guys that needs a good swift punch in his vagina. It still makes me mad that I sat through that interview but I love Slayer and Tom Araya… sometimes you’ve got to take one for the team, I guess.

This guy is annoying and doesnt know metal. He thought Sevendust Cold Day Memory was the best album of 2010. Nothing against Sevendust at all, but no way in hell was that the best. Not even by a long shot. Go wear some more affliction Jose...

Jose is an annoying ass clown. Every time he does an interview you can hear the band just get annoyed with him. He has to put on his stupid fucking 'metal' voice and act like he's in the know with shit and half the time the band or person he's interviewing don't even know what the fuck he's talking about. When I had Sirius I had to change the channel every time he came on because I couldn't stand his stupid voice and even more stupid questions.

He asked Anthrax about what band shirts fans were allowed to wear to shows and they asked him what he was talking about and he seemed like they were nuts. Fuck Jose. He's literally the worst DJ I've ever heard. That gothy skank they had on Much Music wasn't as bad as him.
