MTV Pulling Plug On Web-Only Version Of 'Headbangers Ball' - Sep. 13, 2012
MTV.com is pulling the plug on its web-only show "Headbangers Ball", the program's host and producer, Jose Mangin, revealed to Horns Up Rocks!

Jose, who also works as a program director/DJ on SiriusXM Octane and Liquid Metal, says that the decision to end "Headbangers Ball" was not a cost-cutting move. "Right now, it doesn't really cost [MTV] anything, 'cause I do it — I host it, produce it, edit it and do it all myself," he said. "But I guess it's just the odd man out of their lineup."

He continued, "They do a lot of hip hop, and they support that music fully. They used to support rock.

"Some day, somebody will be there and they'll be, like, 'Why aren't we doing something with rock music?' Somebody will some day that. But in the meantime, I've been honored to do it for four years, to be with it, involved with special events, and then since I took it over, producing and doing programming. Just to say those words together in one sentence, or even just by themselves, meant a lot for me, 'cause since I was a little kid, that was my show that introduced me to wanting to bring metal to the masses."

Mangin, who took over as the official "Ball" host in July 2011, is planning to launch a new show called "Hard Attack TV", which he says will be "an extension of 'Headbangers Ball'. . . [It's] just gonna be the same stuff that I'm doing, but I wanna do some more live stuff, maybe do some cool stuff from the 'Man Cave' [Jose's basement-turned-studio], concerts, taco sessions and stuff like that, interviews, get involved and get people involved and maybe get an 800 number and do something cool where I can talk to the fans and just talk to people, whether it's online or just do something cool."

"Headbangers Ball" began on MTV on April 18, 1987, playing heavy metal and hard rock music videos late at night, from both well-known and more obscure artists. The show offered (and became famous because of) a stark contrast to Top 40 music videos shown during the day.

However, with the mainstream rise of alternative rock and rap music in the 1990s, the relevance of "Headbangers Ball" came into question, and the show was ultimately canceled in 1995. Over eight years later, as new genres of heavy metal were gaining a commercial foothold and fan interest became unavoidable, the program was reintroduced on MTV2. It has remained in varying degrees on the network.

Many of the videos that aired on the first incarnation of the series would find a home on the similarly themed "Metal Mania" on sister channel VH1 Classic.

MTV has been anything but a music related TV of any substance for several decades now. In fact, even back in the day, they a rarely played quality metal, it was transparent pop rock and glam, ad nauseum. with Ricki the rat Rackman as host, embarrassingly awful. A friend of mine from Florida and I had a diner in Manhattan once with his cousin, the VP of MTV/VH1/Comedy Channel back in 1998...I asked him why MTV at that point ended the Headbangers Ball a few years prior..He said it comes down t o profit.... what music is popular and sells the best gets aired, simple economics, but a lack of any worth.

MTV should change their name to GTV (Garbage TV) or at least, change it to what they really are: "Reality/horrible shows television."

I wondered this at least 10 years ago. MTV is on its own little pedestal of shit. But they just don't care because they're still getting ratings--somehow, given the utter dogshit they have as programming.

I remember the days of the headbanger's ball and now what do you get...TV reality shows! I don't want to see preggo teen moms, drunk jersey shore fucks, parents picking your dates, or a rip off of Tosh.0! Even when they play a video, you never get to see the whole damn thing! Soon they'll be switching back to a metal/hard rock channel since everyone is getting sick of hearing record player-players! crap and hip hop needs to die faster!

Didn't even know there was still HB. I haven't watched since the Adam Curry days. Maybe a little bit afterward but by that time MTV was already starting to push rock out the door to cater to grunge and rap. Kudos to this guy for trying to fight the good fight, but MTV hasn't been worthwhile in at least 2 decades.

Does any body drive around in there car and accedently hear the music coming from a 20 year olds car holy shit. Dubstepdance (SHIT) mtv does not play music any how. They play there crap only in the morning and you would swear no white people live in america? Metal does not need the respect from mtv suits but it will again dominate the future of music!!!give it time

I'm pretty diverse in my music taste, but I'll always be a rock/metal fan and kind of like Eddie Trunk says in that commercial, it stands the test of time and even though it's ignored by the mainstream, the fan base is as loyal as ever.

Unfortunately, rock has taken a major back seat to pop. Rock is virtually ignored by the music industry right now...I don't think it's because the music sucks or because the market's not there. It just seems that the industry has turned it's back on the genre. Look at the music awards shows:

Billboard music awards for 2012

TOP ALTERNATIVE ARTIST
COLDPLAY, FOSTER THE PEOPLE, FOO FIGHTERS, MUMFORD & SONS, THE BLACK KEYS

TOP ROCK ARTIST
COLDPLAY, FOSTER THE PEOPLE, FOO FIGHTERS, MUMFORD & SONS, THE BLACK KEYS

This looks like nobody cared enough to consider the artists and the genres and essentially just did a simple copy/paste. (This happened with the Top Rock and Alternative ALBUM categories as well.) I like Foo Fighters and Black keys and I can see why those bands would be the alternative category...not the rock category, though.

But then we have THIS....

TOP ROCK SONG
ROLLING IN THE DEEP - ADELE, SOMEONE LIKE YOU - ADELE, PARADISE - COLDPLAY, PUMPED UP KICKS - FOSTER THE PEOPLE, WALK - FOO FIGHTERS

Adele? How? She was in almost 75% of the categories...how the fuck does she land in rock? The kicker is that if you look at Billboard's site..they have a hard rock category...but was there an award for it? Negative.

The grammys were no better...they went from 12 categories for rock and metal down to like 4.

Maybe it's because rock and metal has proven itself capable of surviving without the backing of the industry.

Speaking of which, who TF is that Hall-Of-the-Mountain-King-looking man before you see Frank Hannon of Tesla in that black and white 'That Metal Show' commercial.

To be kind here, that man looks like he's got prosthetic skin and makeup on. Even his teeth are snaggletooth'd. Who TF is that? Straight out of 'The Hobbit', that cat is.

But that's neither here nor there!

Fuck it. If it's only on the internet, then why bother? It was cooler being on t.v. . May as well scrap it. It has music attached to it. MTV is not about music whatsoever, so it stands to reason with their ass-backwards, shitty logic and programming.

They should just launch it again over at VH1 Classic. Let Eddie Trunk host it (or revolving musical guest hosts...like in the old days) and make it a "real" metal/rock show where we can see classic videos from Lizzy Borden, Armored Saint, Saxon, Dirty Looks, Exodus, Overkill (you get the point) and put Metal Mania to rest where all they play are the same tired videos by Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley Crue and Def Leppard

Another company needs to come along and break MTV Networks' monopoly on music on basic cable. The only reason they get away with playing garbage is because they have no competition. If MTV doesn't want to play music, then they need to be forced aside so someone else can do it.

Some fans may like our status as "underground", but I don't. All music, including hard rock and metal needs to be promoted in order to thrive. The best way to do that is still on TV. Until we get a presence back on TV, these genres will continue to wither away. The latest evidence of that is the closing of Hydra Head Records.

I'd ever utter the words " I miss Rikki Rachtman". Saw the show a few times in 2004/05 after Dimebag left us and from the depths of my soul I have to say that they played 85% shit. All Cookie Monster vocals and no guitar solo bands. That fine ass chick over on FUSE was kicking their asses. Just the same HB never lived up to it's potential back in the day as you'd always have to sit through bands like Bon Jovial, Warrant, Poison etc. Not to say I expected it to be full on metal, but at the very least with a name like Headbanger's Ball it should've been hard rock without a power ballad in sight. Good memories though of getting loaded on a Saturday night and cranking up the good stuff.
