ACCEPT Guitarist: UDO DIRKSCHNEIDER's Reality Has Never Been Ours - Sep. 13, 2012
Jason Bodak of Examiner.com recently conducted an interview with guitarist Wolf Hoffmann of German heavy metal legends ACCEPT. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Examiner.com: ?Now that you got your "comeback" album out of the way with "Blood Of The Nations", and now that vocalist Mark Tornillo has been overwhelmingly welcomed to the fold by fans and critics alike, was it a much more pleasant experience recording the follow-up album, "Stalingrad"?

Wolf: Well, yes and no. "Blood Of The Nations" has been a total freefall for all of us as we just opened up and let it out. [ACCEPT bassist] Peter [Baltes] and I have been writing songs together since we were 16 years old. "Blood Of The Nations" surprised us as much as the fans. After being not in the business for so long, we did not even know if that what came out was "it." Our producer, Andy Sneap, was as much a miracle as us running into Mark Tornillo, when none of us had plans to revive the band again. Two world tours later, the next round was foreboding… lots of pressure. But because we wrote the album in such a short time after the first, it seemed as we just continued where we left [off]. I am probably the biggest "problem" in all of that, as I am a perfectionist and a never-ending critic of myself. So, perhaps we were not that "innocent" the second time around, as we wanted to please our fans. The verdict is out: we got that covered.

Examiner.com: ?Working with producer Andy Sneap has now yielded two exceptional albums. What is it about working with him that brings out the best in you?

Wolf: Maybe that he grew up with ACCEPT as one of his most influential bands. We believe that he brought us back to us, the way we were… and besides many other outstanding talents he has, this was perhaps the key moment in all of this.

Examiner.com: You've written many, many great songs with former vocalist Udo Dirkschneider, and now you are writing great songs with Tornillo. Has the songwriting process changed at all, having a new vocalist, or is there a set methodology for creating a new ACCEPT album?

Wolf: You know, we do not talk about Udo at all. Never. He left the band 25 years ago. People forget that sometimes. He has painted a picture about his role in ACCEPT and we are so very disconnected from the past that we would have a hard time to go back to define his role. One thing I can say for sure: his reality has never been ours. We hope he is doing what he loves to do… really! Mark presented us with a special situation. It is not the question about who is a better singer. The question is: what does the singer inspire the songwriters to do, how far can they go in the moment they are at that minute? I like to compare the relation between a singer and a band to a marriage. Not everybody in a marriage is bringing the best out in the other. That has nothing to do with good or bad, just with what do they inspire and positively bring out in each other. Peter and I are joined at the hips at songwriting — always have been. For us the process has never changed, but the possibilities have, big time! People are different and different experiences make you do different things. Mark is as he is now and we are as we are now: a match made in heaven. We never felt we have to prove anything beyond the songs we are writing and performing. And with great humility. I tend to believe the fans got that. We are who we are and we write songs and perform always with one thought in mind: this is the moment where you get the best we have. You judge if that is what you have been looking for. Seems to me… after a little over 30 months from the very first show we did, the fans said and say yes!

Examiner.com: With your new lineup, do you feel you could go in certain musical directions that you couldn't before?

Wolf: We know now only one direction works for us; the time of searching is long gone. But then you never know… I am pretty sure we are where we want to be and when that is the case, I believe, you do not search for something else. I guess we're busy to better ourselves and therefore we automatically step into new waters. You get cocky when something works well. We can do that freely, as we have Andy who will rein us in when needed!

I was a fan from many years ago with Udo, and now I am a huge fan all over again, but this time along with my children who are singing right along with me as Mark belts it out. Accept is a powerful band, not afraid of their formula that works, all the respect in the world to the might Udo, but this lineup - pure and simple - kicks ass and is taking names with Andy steering the ship.
Wolf is pure class and I'm glad he's getting more attention as the incredible guitarist he is.
Join the Revolution!!

you don't talk about UDO? really? yea you do or did when you whined about how he did not want to return to the band when you decided to reform after years of doing nothing while he was making great music with his band.but he was suppose to drop that because you got bored painting or riding horses? he left the band because you broke up remember? came back and did the reunion shows and then you guys were done. again you wanted him to throw away his career for you because you got bored? I have heard the new stuff sounds good but after listening to you not talk about your former singer have no intention to buy it. first you try and claim all the credit for the accept sound saying he never wrote the songs,if that is the case explain how his band has the classic accept sound even though you do not write the songs? hey whatever makes you happy but if there was no UDO there would be no accept!

Sorry, but UDO has not been making "great music".....cheesy is more like it. And Udo left the first time on his on when he decided to go solo back in the '80's...

UDO's career? Really singing Accept songs? Not much of a solo career I would say.

no he did not, accept wanted to go mainstream and a new singer and failed. cheesy? I don't think so and you can't deny his band sounds more like accept than the current one. not bad for somebody who had nothing to do with making accept sound according to these guys.

what kind of "perfectionist" Wolf is.

One thing I really don´t get why is Wolf so annoyed when it comes to Udo. With the success of BOTN and Stalingrad he could show way more class...

"He has painted a picture about his role in ACCEPT and we are so very disconnected from the past that we would have a hard time to go back to define his role." ...uhhh....come on, Wolf...

While I happen to live miles from their founding place, I am neither a big fan of Accept nor U.D.O.
I even think U.D.O. last few albums were ridiculous and cheesy.

But give the man justice where justice is due... the guy I saw at 2005's Rock Hard Festival did not look like Tornillo and I remember some album from the mid-90s with Dirkschneider on vocals.

Mr. Hoffmann better takes a look at wikipedia.

Haha, same here brother! My ears are still ringing! The show was absolutely fucking awesome, both bands were amazing! Only complaint I have is that the Kreator sound mix was off...guitars were way too low and drums were too high, you could barely hear the guitars for over half the show. Not sure if that was just me, but that was a little disappointing. Accept mix was great, lol though they could have put more volume into the vocals...

It's gonna be real sad when both sides pass away with bitterness in their hearts...I hope they do sort it out.

Balls to the Wall was one of the first records I ever purchased, and it still stays in my top 10 of greatest metal records ever.

Apparently Wolf forgot about Udo being in the band when they reformed in the early 90's. I guess those three albums have been erased from history.

Wolf is class and a guitar god. Tells it like it is, Stalingrad & BOTN are modern day metal classics. Cannot wait to see Accept again in a few months.

We all know he plays very well, but his disdain for Udo is remarkable. He forgets the fantastic 90?s albums, Udo may not have contributed musically to the songs but he defined the Accept sound for sure. Mark is a fantastic addition to the band and has given them a boost. So, to each their own, things have happened but everytime they ask him about Udo is like when a bull is shown a cape in bullfighting!!!!

There is no point in denying Udo's (important) contributions to Accept, on the other hand it's also clear that the new Accept is way better than Udo's band.

BTW, Frank's new album is good, to many God's references to my taste but still a good album (the guy is a monster on guitar, something you are not able to discover while he's playing in Accept), but to me Loyal to None is way superior.

I loved Accept way back when I first heard the band. I admit that I was a naysayer upon hearing the news about Accept getting together with the new guy. Man - I am very happy to say I was wrong. These last two albums are killer!

The whole thing was win/win as far as I'm concerned. I love Udo's solo stuff and I REALLY love the last two Accept records. You can't have too much great metal and now we have twice as much.

...but I can't stand it how he tries to undermine Udo and his talent, contribution and presence - while uplifting himself with Baltes - each and every fucking time he does an interview. Initially, Wolf was bitter about Udo not wanting to reunite and still shows in his talk. Sure, Accept is great today, they have made 2 great albums with Tornillo, but anyone - Wolf included - saying that they don't talk or think about Udo today, when everything with Tornillo is so fucking great, is foolish and in denial. I think all real Accept fans would have wanted Udo back with Accept, but it was not to be. Today's Accept is almost as good as it could be, they're still missing one of the key elements to a full 100% Accept excellence and that is Udo Dirkschneider.

Accept with Tornillo, Udo with his people...that's 2 great German metal bands, just like Doro, Sodom, Kreator, Axel Rudi Pell, Primal Fear, Gamma Ray, Helloween...Accept with Udo would be THE greatest German metal band. It's that fucking simple, no matter how much anyone likes the new Accept albums. I love them both, and still I stand behind my statement.

25 years ago Udo left, they reformed 20 years ago, 16 years ago Accept broke up so it's not that long ago, Wolf. You had your chance back in 2005, what did you fuck up back then?

The reality is that in 2009 Wolf wanted to reform Accept with Udo, they didn't get to agreement about the use of the name (Udo wanted to have the right to use the name Accept alone as well so that Udo wouldn't have to relaunch U.D.O. for the second time in case Wolf left again), now Wolf likes to talk shit about Udo every time. It's sad that Wolf can't be satisfied with his current success without talking shit.

But I don't get the negative posts. Wolf didn't say anything negative in his interview. He just said the don't think or talk about UDO. Why is that a problem? UDO left on his own in the 80's and at that point after Russian Roulette the band was on fumes. We all gained after that with decent UDO music. Eat the Heat was crap but they tried. Now the new Accept is amazing. Udo made unreasonable demands about the band name at the previous reunion and it wasn't accepted. It's like Halford saying "I will join Priest again, but if you leave I keep the name.".......who would do that?????
