ANTHRAX Guitarist: 'We Had No Intention Ever Of Changing Our Name' - Sep. 12, 2012
On the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian spoke to Steve Newton of the Georgia Straight about the media frenzy that had occured, a few weeks after the attacks, regarding the band's name. One person died of anthrax contamination, and two other people were exposed to the disease in Florida in an outbreak that authorities were investigating at the time as a criminal action.

"We had no intention ever of changing our name or doing anything like that," Ian told Georgia Straight. "But the fact was that all this very, very mainstream media —I'm talking from CNN to the Wall Street Journal to the New York Times, the biggest mainstream media in the world — are suddenly calling our publicist trying to get interviews with us.

"And my attitude right from the start was, 'Well, these guys, they didn't want anything to do with us when our record came out not that long ago,' you know. And now they want to talk to us because they need to fill space because this is the story of the week — which is gonna disappear in the next two months. And of course it did.

"So we just wouldn't buy into it," continued Ian. "Although I think I did do one interview — and I can't remember if it was the Times — but the guy was a huge fan of the band, and said, 'You know, look, if I could cover you in this paper of course I would.' But I was at least able to get the word out that, 'Look, we're not gonna buy into this sensationalism. We have nothing to do with this. Just because we happen to be in a band that has the same name--a name that we had been renting for 20-odd years at the time.'

"So we just really felt like, people have better things to do--or journalists should have better things to do — than worry about whether or not ANTHRAX is gonna change their name. We just thought it was ridiculous."

For more from Scott Ian — including his thoughts on the new album, the return of vocalist Joey Belladonna, and his new online program, "Fangoria's Blood & Guts With Scott Ian" — see the story in next week's issue of the Georgia Straight.

I remember back then that Anthrax put a message up on the front of their website that said something along the lines of "While we respect and feel sorry for the victims of the attacks it had nothing to do with the band or our name. We've had our name for over a decade and had no plans to change it."

And I say good for them.

Then again, it would have been a great idea to change the name to Belladonna, which is another kind of poison like Anthrax ... esp as Bush was the singer then.

Oh wait. I'd better not say anything unkind to Anthrax or Lita Ford will say "Fuck you"... but then she won't actually follow through and fuck me.

Just more manufactured controversy from one of metals all-time underdogs.

Just keep writing good records. That's all you've ever needed to do.

Glad they stuck by their words & kept the name still. Why change it, if it isn't broken.

From the Blabbermouth archives :

Here is a message from the ANTHRAX camp regarding the recent world events that have brought their band name (indirectly) into the spotlight:
...
“In light of current events, we are changing the name of the band to something more friendly, 'Basket Full Of Puppies'. Actually, just the fact that we are making jokes about our name sucks.
...
“In the twenty years we've been known as 'ANTHRAX', we never thought the day would come that our name would actually mean what it really means. When I learned about anthrax in my senior year biology class, I thought the name sounded 'metal'. Everyone in my neighborhood had a band with an 'er' name, like 'RIPPER' or 'DECEIVER' or 'KILLERS' and I wanted to be different. 'ANTHRAX' sounded cool, aggressive, and nobody knew what it was. Until a few years ago most people thought we'd made it up. Even our album, Spreading The Disease was just a play on the name. We were spreading our music to the masses.
...
“Before the tragedy of September 11th, the only thing scary about ANTHRAX was our bad hair in the 80's and the Fistful Of Metal album cover. Most people associated the name ANTHRAX with the band, not the germ. Now in the wake of those events, our name symbolizes fear, paranoia and death. Suddenly our name is not so cool. To be associated with these things we are against is a strange and stressful situation. To us, and to millions of people, it is just a name. We don't want to change the name of the band, not because it would be a pain in the ass, but because we hope that no further negative events will happen and it won't be necessary. We hope and pray that this problem goes away quietly and we all grow old and fat together.
...
“Be safe, Scott, Charlie, Frank and John AKA
...
“PS - If an ANTHRAX member gets anthrax, call Alanis Morrisette. That would be ironic. Don't you think?”

The reason the media didn't give a shit about you before was because you were putting out absolute garbage albums such as Volume 8 and Stomp 442. You should have changed your name as those albums didn't sound anything like "Anthrax"

These guys even today are a shell of their former selves.

It's baffling to me that the same band who put out Among the Living and Persistence of Time also put out shit like Volume 8, Stomp, and We've come for you all.

At least Joey is back now and they sound somewhat like Anthrax again. Though they need to give the beanie guy a boot and bring back Danny Spitz for a true Anthrax album

They need to take notes from Testament on how to put out quality Thrash albums!
