MEGADETH's 'Countdown To Extinction' Album Remastered And Expanded For 20th-Anniversary Edition - Sep. 10, 2012
MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine has personally overseen a new 20th-anniversary edition of the band's most popular album, 1992's double platinum-certified "Countdown To Extinction", to be released November 6 by Capitol/EMI.

After wrapping up their "TH1RT3EN World Tour" this fall, MEGADETH will perform the acclaimed album in its entirety on their "Countdown To Extinction 20th Anniversary Tour" this November and December.

Presented in a 2CD lift-top box and digitally, "Countdown To Extinction"'s new commemorative edition pairs the remastered original album with a 1992 concert, recorded live at San Francisco's Cow Palace, which has never before been released in its entirety. The concert audio has been newly remixed for this release. The physical and digital versions both include a booklet with a new liner notes essay by music journalist Kory Grow, and the 2CD box also contains a 24" x 36" poster and four collectible postcards.

"Countdown To Extinction", MEGADETH's fifth studio album, was recorded in Los Angeles in 1992 as rioting raged across the city in response to the Rodney King trial verdicts. American tensions weren't limited to L.A., by any means, as the Gulf War was still fresh in people's minds, the state of the environment was becoming headline news, and President George H.W. Bush was seeking reelection in a heated campaign season.

Out of this turmoil, MEGADETH was inspired to create "Countdown To Extinction", considered by many to be the band's best and most accessible album. The group's previous albums, including "So Far, So Good…So What!" and "Rust In Peace", included songs that tackled topics like censorship and religious bloodletting in the Middle East. But none were as polemical as the sonic missiles launched by "Countdown". MEGADETH laced the songs with acid-tongued commentary about subjects ranging from the futility of war ("Architecture Of Aggression") to the senseless brutality of caged hunting ("Countdown To Extinction"). "Foreclosure Of A Dream" sampled George Bush's infamous "Read my lips" speech, making a statement about taxation endangering the American Dream.

Thanks to a perfect balance of hard-rock song structures, epic choruses, and fleet-fingered guitar work, "Countdown To Extinction" became an instant classic, benefiting from copious MTV and radio play. Spin magazine raved that "Countdown" "may just be the finest thrash-metal album ever made," and before long, songs like "Symphony Of Destruction", "Sweating Bullets" and "Skin O' My Teeth" had entered metal's canon of essential recordings. The album shot to No. 2 on the Billboard chart (it may have hit No. 1, if not for Billy Ray Cyrus' long chart-topping reign with "Some Gave All"), and it was certified double platinum in the U.S. within two years, with sales of more than two million copies.

MEGADETH was in top form, with Mustaine, the band's then 31-year-old singer and guitarist leading the album's assault with lyrics like "You know your worth when your enemies praise your architecture of aggression," not to mention his venomous rhythm guitar attack. His band mates completed the picture, as lead guitarist Marty Friedman blazed with memorable solos, bassist David Ellefson jammed dizzying arrays of low-end thunder, and drummer Nick Menza attacked his kit. MEGADETH sounded hungry, and the band was rewarded when the album earned a Grammy Award nomination ("Best Metal Performance") and when its title cut garnered a Genesis Award from the Humane Society for raising awareness for animal rights issues.

They fucked up Rust In Peace and So far So Good So what. Why fuck up another album remastering it. Not to mention one that sucks and lacks any kind of balls at all. Why make things worse besides a cash grab attempt.

I am giving the $100 that I would have spent on a pair of tickets to the Aurora shooting victims that Dave talked shit about.

There are a lot of albums out there that could stand to be remastered, but Countdown To Extinction isn't one of them.

How about they just reissue the original masters on vinyl instead of ruining a perfectly good album for a second time...

As if dave's remixing butchery wasn't bad enough

Any album that starts off with a burner like Skin O my teeth and ends with a legendary riff classic like ashes in your mouth...is a fantastic album and CTE is certainly that.

Some of you need to learn the difference between remixing and remastering. Rust and Peace sells were both remixed and remastered. In regards to CTE, they are just remastering it from the original tapes, not re-mixing so it doesnt change the original material. when you remix a album, it changes the original material.

next time learn music 101 before making stupid comments. or consult Lars if you can pry him away from his pro tools! LMAO!!!

...but not a great one. I love the Peace Sells remaster (as opposed to the lackluster remixes from the early 00's), but I would've done So Far So Good or Rust in Peace first.

I swear this is the second time that Megadeth has come to Charlotte right around Thanksgiving and, just like last time, I'm gonna be out of fucking town with the wife's family!!

How about scheduling a non-holiday date on your next run, pretty please Dave?

Did anyone even read the press thingy? Mentions of the 92 LA riots? Stay classy, Dave. I'm sure that inspired you to write 'This Was My Life'.

Good Call. I've met all of the above save Joe Elliot and Billy Milano (nor Mitt Romney) and you're spot on. All these guys are douches. Talented maybe, but cordial not so much. Is it too much to ask to have you at least feign some sort of respect for the audience that put you where you are. Yeesh.

Remastering is a good thing, take Death's Human album...you can actually hear the bass parts now. It's almost like hearing the album for the first time again.

Metallica releases Black Album, Dave releases Countdown. Metallica performs entire album for anniversary, Dave performs entire album for anniversary. I'm surprised he doesn't have a 3D movie in the works

Bought this album when it came out and I was at that Cow Palace show and much as I tried to like the album for years, I had to finally admit its shit. Its so overproduced and clean that any balls it mighta had were scraped away with a fine toothed comb. Remastering it is pointless. Let's take more balls away from this ball-less recording! It sold well because it had a really sucky mainstream leaning which shoulda alienated any fan of the hardcore stuff. On the other hand. The Killing is my Biz remix/remaster was a HUGE honor to Gar, because now his brilliant drumming shines on that.

Only one Midwest show on the tour? I guess I'm driving to Columbus because there's no way I'm missing them play the entire album! CTE could have been a perfect album if it wasn't for Captive Honor.

I'm not as old some of you so all I have is the 2004 remix of CTE. I haven't heard the original mix, and I don't really care to hear it.

from what I got at least, the only album in the Megadeth catalog that was deserving of a remaster. Listen to the original mixes as oppose to the remaster.
But I didn't like the remaster of Countdown, Rust in Peace and Youthanasia. They sounded way better in their original form.
If it ain't broke, why fix it?
Just my opinion....

In NJ he went from the PNC Amphitheater down the street to the Starland club in 6 months. In MA he went from Tsongas Arena to the Palladium club. The list goes on and the fat lady sings a Symphony.

I would so buy this remaster, just to listen to it out of curiosity. I'd also like the Peace Sells...but Who's Remastering again CD. I guess if you can't sell with the big boys of METAL, then you can keep selling Remasters, right?

Right? I mean com' on!
