GODSMACK Frontman Scolds Security For Using 'Unnecessary' Force While Tackling Fan (Video) - Sep. 7, 2012
GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna scolded the security for using "unnecessary" force while tackling a fan during the band's concert on August 31 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Just as GODSMACK had begun to play the song "Awake" while on tour as the headliners of the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival, a shirtless fan jumped onstage, ran around for a couple of seconds and then proceeded to place a hat on top of Erna's head. It was at that point that a couple of security guards came flying from both sides of the stage and tackled the fan, prompting Sully to stop midway through the song and instruct the guards to back off.

"Way fucking unnecessary, guys," Erna can be heard saying in a fan-filmed video clip of the incident (see below). "Put him down. Seriously, that's crazy. The kid put a hat on me. It's okay. I don't need a fucking medic. Let him go back and enjoy the show. It's called fucking rock 'n' roll."

A couple of seconds later, Erna and his bandmates continued the show from the second verse of "Awake".

LAMB OF GOD frontman Randy Blythe recently spent five weeks in a jail in the Czech Republic where he is facing manslaughter charges in connection with the death of a fan more than two years ago.

Blythe, 41, is accused of causing the fatal injury that occurred at LAMB OF GOD's May 24, 2010 show in Prague. The singer allegedly either pushed or struck a 19-year-old fan named Daniel N. — a guitarist in a local metal band — and that person died almost a month later of bleeding in the brain.

A number of rockers have come to Randy's defense, with many of them citing the 2004 shooting death onstage of PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott as the reason why musicians are so defensive nowadays about fans invading the stage.

DISTURBED drummer Mike Wengren told The Pulse Of Radio not along after Dimebag was shot that his death had cast a shadow over live performing. "I think one of the most scariest things is, you go up onstage, and there's this energy transfer between the band and the crowd, and you almost feel invincible. You feel very empowered. Never in a million years would anyone ever think something like that was even possible, and I think it just caught everyone off guard. It's pretty scary."

Speaking to Metalholic.com, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH drummer Jeremy Spencer said, "I think for fans these days, especially after the 'Dimebag' Darrell incident, I just think don't [go up] on stage unless you're invited — I mean, that's the only time. Because everything changed after that day. . . These days, it's almost better to stay off the stage unless you're invited, I think. That's my take on it, anyway."

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH bassist Chris Kael simply tweeted, "Everything changed on December 8, 2004. #stayoffthestage #FreeRandyBlythe," while ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian wrote, "It's complete and utter bullshit for him to be treated like a criminal for something he didn't do. Now fans can see firsthand why there's no stage diving anymore. Especially in the post-Darrell world we live in . . . Of course it's sad that this person died, it's a tragedy, but it's not Randy's fault."

Video below: GODSMACK performing "Awake" in Pittsburgh (The incident in question occurs around the 18-second mark.)

I say beat the fuck out of every stupid asshole who climbs onstage uninvited and then excort them to a jail cell after they get out of the hospital. They have no business being up there and it is not fucking ok no matter what the dwarf singer says. It's time to put a stop to this bullshit once and for all!

I say, just throw a roll of razor wire across the front of the stage, like you see on top of the prison fences.

Not only will it keep idiots off the fuckin' stage, it will also look cool as hell for a Metal show.

Or, put a chain link fence in front of the stage like Megadeth's 'Wake Up Dead' video.

Do you want to deal with stage jumpers and get a message across that it's NOT alright to do shit like this because of what happened to Dimebag, or is it only ok when a band member fucks up a fan?

Get your stories straight.

Judging by the timing of his comment, I think it had more to do with what the security was doing after they got the guy off the stage, than the tackle itself. Erna appears to look over at the area where security had taken him and then stopped the show.

It must suck to do security at shows. Not only do you have to put up with the jerk-of fans that:

(A) Can't handle their booze.
(B) The fans that don't know how to have a good time without starting a fight or breaking things at the venue.
(C) Groups of fans that try to push the security to become physical, so they can scream brutality and file a lawsuit.
(C) Rockstars getting on their high-horse acting like the security is the problem.

If a fan jumps on stage and you go after him, then you have a rockstar berating you in front of the whole crowd making you look like an idiot, when you're just doing your job.

But if you don't go after the fan on the stage, then the same rockstar will be screaming at you saying you didn't do your job and something could've happened, then they always have to throw the Dimebag incident out there.

My attitude is, If you cross the barricade and go on the stage: You're fair game for the security and whatever happens is your own fault. If you get seriously hurt or even killed, Too bad, You shouldn't have been there.

I'm not a fan of Godsmack myself, but right fucking on to Sully! People are just too ridiculous about fans nowadays. In the beginning a band will play shows where they have people piling of the stage, stage diving, whatever....and then at some point they get to a point where they are so detached from their fans that they feel they need the fucking Oakland Raiders to protect the band from them. It's gotten out of control. Buck up all you pussy bands out there....it's Rock N' Roll, not Adult Contemporary!

Guess I'm too old-school, being "bred" in the Hardcore scene in the mid/late eighties, but I have a new found respect for Sully. The Dime tragedy will forever loom but being a drummer myself and having the joy of fans "digging" the show and "slamming and diving" was,is, and always will be "acceptable conduct."

Nothing wrong with stage crashers. It's not theatre or the opera, its a rock/metal concert and their behavior is to be expected.

Now as far as all the gun comments go I think its bound time that all concert venues have metal detectors. This way no one has to worry about the event of a stage crasher as much.

I thought it was cool of him, and of course I agree. As I've pointed out several times, stage diving and that sort of thing has been going on for -decades- and out of -billions- of shows and concerts, one guy got got murdered, and one kid died (under circumstances still unknown). People need to stop overreacting about this horseshit.

EXACTLY! I remember when shows were crazy! When it was expected for people to jump on stage, and get a little nuts! Not sit there like Yanni playing in Japan where everyone is sitting there on their hands. The Dimebag shooting ruined everything because now everyone acts like scared little babies and act like "people get killed and assaulted on stage all the time!" It just doesn't happen! Consider how many punk, metal, hardcore shows of all kind happen on a daily basis, and have happened for 30+ years and you can add up all of the serious assaults that happened on one hand. The flip side of the coin is you have a bunch of self righteous fans who want to be all like "fuck those stupid assholes, they should no better". Maybe it's because I remember going to metal and hardcore shows before there was a fucking 6 foot barrier between the fans and the stage, but things have just gotten terrible. The rock n' roll experience has become so sanitized, and watered down. It's sad to think the police state we live in where peoples fear of what might happen has bled into live metal shows, where meat-headed bouncers who have no interest in the music, or band, but love kicking the shit out of anyone who steps out of line. All they are is rent-a-cops with a hard on for beating peoples asses.

The stage is a bands' domain. If you are an audience member and you choose to go onto the stage while the band's playing, you have asked for what you have coming.

Unfortunately, the aforementioned Dimebag and other incidence have highlighted the dangers of letting inebriated troglodytes jump onto the stage. 99% of the time it may be harmless, but the 1% of the times it's not the price is too great.

Finally a fuckin reasonable person. Many bands could learn something from Sully. No reason to beat the fuck out of a fan or throw them out or kill them. Yes Randy I'm pointing at you fuckin fan killer and all the other moronic musicians and security that treat the fans shitty at concerts. If people get excited jump around or even jump on the stage why act like pussies about it or try to hurt them. It's rock and roll grow a pair. As long a concert goer is not hurting other concert goers/fans or band members or anyone let them have fun and jump around. Godsmack handled that situation with total class.

People, times change. Yes stage diving, slam dancing and all that has been around for decades. There's a new breed out there, each generation of rock/metal fans seem to get more crazy as a majority. In the past decade a new trend started ( mostly with emos ) where they think doing lame ass karate moves in a pit is acceptable. We're also in a time of war and political unrest..that drives people closer to the edge. The thing that's scary about the Dimebag situation..its not like just a few soldiers are coming back with mental issues they didn't have previously have, it's a fucking majority.

I side with Sully here...The guy was on stage, and they unnecessarily roughhoused him, when they simply could have done their job and put him in the pit. I'm sorry, but if Randy can sit over a month in jail for a little shove to a person who made 3 attempts, and was acting more "weird" than this dude who put a hat on the singer's head and was going back off. Sully didn't say not to touch the guy, he just said that was too much. Put him in the pit and let the show go on. I don't care if you're a security guard or a fucking cop, you don't have any more of a right to slam someone down and act brutal towards them without probable cause than a performer protecting themselves. I'm firm on the idea that these assholes shouldn't be allowed to jump onstage, they're there to watch the damn show, not be in it...but I don't think security should be able to treat the fans ANY way they want, and it's justified...Randy's hand touched the fan's shoulder, and they randomly pick him up on manslaughter charges.

I dunno, security at alort of these shows often go above and beyond whatever "force" is necessary.

Alot of them get pumped up and go work these shows HOPING someone tries something so they can "bash some heads!"

Overgrown bullies hoping to kick some ass alot of them are. Cops are like this too. That's why you see cops often escalate a situation themselves. 'Cause they get bored and wanna "crack some skulls".

I agree with Sully! No big deal. The problem was after the kid left the stage. Sully tells the security to put him down. Maybe they were going to slam him or something. By the way, what do you think Nikki Sixx would have done? That kid would have never made it off stage as ANYONE who touches Nikki's wig gets knocked out! Nikki would have knocked the kid down then pummeled him with his bass. BLOOD EVERYWHERE!!!!
