Was SAMMY HAGAR Almost In AEROSMITH? - Sep. 4, 2012
According to The Pulse Of Radio, it was back in 2010 when AEROSMITH seriously considered replacing singer Steven Tyler, whose relapse into drug use and onstage injury led the band to cancel a U.S. tour and push back work on a new album. Although a number of candidates for the job were rumored at the time, AEROSMITH guitarist Brad Whitford finally confirmed one over the weekend on VH1's "That Metal Show": ex-VAN HALEN and current CHICKENFOOT vocalist Sammy Hagar.

Whitford explained, "We had to talk about it — maybe we could put a different name on it and bring somebody else in? We spoke to Sammy and he was really excited about it. I love Sammy. It was like, 'Oh, man, this would be so cool!' But it all started to come back together on its own."

Tyler and the rest of AEROSMITH did in fact settle their differences, and the band's new album, "Music From Another Dimension", comes out November 6.

Meanwhile, Hagar has continued to record and tour with CHICKENFOOT, which also features ex-VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony and RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Chad Smith.

That group recently announced plans to reissue its gold-selling 2009 self-titled debut as a double-disc set on October 16. The new version will feature bonus live tracks recorded on the group's recent tour behind its sophomore studio effort, "III".

They should have got the Crypt Keeper from Tales from the Crypt, no one would have noticed if they threw a few scarfs on the guy.

Agreed. another example of how the singer is the voice and fave of a band. You can usually replace any other member and do ok but its extremely difficult to replace a singer and have the same success.

... a cool collaboration. There's some Aerosmith songs I can't see Hagar doing, but others would have been interesting.

You couldn't have called it Aerosmith though, it definitely would have needed a fresh name.

LOL the trolls can't make sarcastic remarks about Sammy making 'pop ballads' on an Aerosmith story can they? At least Sammy writes his own ballads, doesn't buy them from Diane Warren & Desmond Child!

How is Sammy writing lyrics to Eddie's music "wrong"? Get over yourself. Putting labels like pop, fluff, and other nonsense is childish.

you're the one getting all uptight my metal friend. I'm sure Desmond Child and Diane Warren fans out here might tell you the same, get over yourself. Seriously, what the hell's the difference between Angel, or Dreams? Both are incredibly sappy, and cheesy, no? get over yourself I retort! . Because YOU like Sammy but not Desmond Child. No difference in the ballads. The cheese-o-meter's maxed at 10 on both artists, in this case.

and I like Asmith and vintage VH. Even like some of Aerosmith's 70's ballads. Can't get behind "don't wanna miss a thing" OR "love walks in" for that matter. I would assume Diane Warren did write those Hagar ballads.

I won't label the those songs, other than putting them in my personal category of "major sellout suckage". Rock, Pop, Fluff metal, doesn't matter, sucking is sucking.

Fine, as long as you acknowledge it's only your opinion. I wouldn't agree that they are the same, because Eddie had written those songs as full songs. They have synths, and are catchy. So they get labeled as pop crap. Pop music had never been successful and synths hadn't rule the airwaves, would they have been considered crap? What's the difference between writing a simple catchy song structure on a guitar or with a synth?

It's true the lyrics are simple, Hagar has never written with as much personality as Roth, but guess what? 99% of artists are like that. Less 'commercial' hard rock acts like Foreigner and Bad Company wrote the same bland souless lyrics, made for easy radio consumption. Hagar's clicheness actually made them more unique then most other artists.

of course its opinion, as we both know, 5150 sold through the roof. That stuff was huge, as was Starship, .38 Special, and Poison.

Because Eddie wrote them, doesn't mean they can't be bad. (and I'm a huge EVH fan)...and in my "humble" opinion, you CAN write a simple catchy song, but when you add electronic drums, keytars, a generic solo, write lyrics like "we'll get higher and higher, baby dry your eyes, because thats what dreams are made of", it jumps the shark, no? Eddie's solo in Dreams is Eddie trying to be flashy, he sounds like his own copy cats.

and like I said, I like Ballads, but the "power" ballad has all those elements that make it cheesy. Dated. Those VH songs are SO 1986. it could have been on Miami Vice.

the last paragraph is true, but that's why I don't listen to a lot of Foreigner(and they have some decent early stuff). Bad Co is flat out over played, their lyrics may be generic but sound like Dylan compared to Hagar...in any case, if 50% of those artist are like that, listen to the other 50% There's so much GOOD music to torcher yourself listening to Dreams or I can't drive 55. Its like forcing yourself to like Brussel Sprouts. :) cheers.

Not sure why this is newsworthy again all of the sudden.
They Had To get Steven Tyler back. There is no Aerosmith without Steven Tyler singing. It's a bit like The Stones without Mick Jagger. Impossible, or just an awful idea.

I could see Sammy doing a ripping version of Lightning Strikes... and maybe some tracks from Done With Mirrors... My Fist, Your Face, Shela,... sonically, it might work, but the reality is it would never work. There is no Aerosmith without Tyler, that is for certain.

Aerosmith should quit making albums and just tour these days.

Hangman Jury was the last great Aerosmith song and that was 1987.

Next time Stevie Ty jumps the boat for a reality show ( soon, i'm sure ) they should still make some music together..just don't call it Aerosmith. AeroHagar or SammySmith, yup!! For those who don't think he can do "Walk this Way", you never heard him do "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!)". Ok, it wasn't perfect..but considering his age, impressive!

Say what you will about Sammy but for his voice, and work ethic to hold up as it has in his 60s is impressive. More impressed with him than with Ozzy, Stones or anyone else in his age group. I'd still take classic Sabbath and Stones over any Sammy stuff but he has aged better.

Take the song Source Of Infection and just listen to those lame ass phoned in lyrics and then tell me all about his work ethic. Dave could've made that song a classic in 5 minutes. If you can't see where I'm coming from then you truly don't understand Van Halen or they're history.

You're an idiot and deserve to be insulted. How did Sammy ruin Van Halen?

Who plays guitar in the band?
Who plays keyboards in the band?
Who writes the music in the band?
Who wrote the keyboard love ballads?
Who's decision was it to replace Roth with Patty Smyth?
When Sam & Mike went out as the Other Half, who was bitching about "those guys playing MY music?

Edward Van Meth-head ruined Van Halen. No one else.

Sammy singing Aerosmith tunes would have been killer. Not many vocalists out there that could have pulled it off. They didn't contact Roth.

a point you are missing is Roth wouldn't have done the majority of those songs, or changed them to be less poppy. and wrote edgier melodies. and NOT have written all the lyrics about "love".

for crying out loud, Smthye wasn't in the band, nor was Townsend, and the list of others they threw around.

some of your points are indeed valid, but half baked...and no, Sam coudn't pull of the Tyler vocals. not close. even if you think Sam has a great voice(which he doesnt), its nothing like Tylers...Roth had his day. He's apart of some of the best rock songs in history. Sam was always a B or C level rock artist, a Billy Squier, Loverboy type.
