'Satanic' Heavy Metal Concert In Egypt Prompts Police Investigation - Sep. 3, 2012
According to Ahram Online, a lawyer for the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) filed a complaint Saturday to Egypt's interior ministry against El-Sawy Culture Wheel, the prominent cultural centre in Cairo's upscale Zamalek district, accusing it of hosting "Satanist" rock bands and events. The suit says an August 31 concert at the center was attended by people wearing t-shirts adorned with what the lawyer, Ismail El-Weshahy, described as satanic shapes and symbols. El-Weshahy said that one of his two clients, both of whom are members of an independent anti-corruption NGO called 'We're Watching You," had also filmed a group of people who he said were performing satanic rituals in the center.

In response, the Culture Wheel issued a statement in which it denied claims by El-Weshahy and his clients.

"In our ten years of activity, the Culture Wheel has not hosted any kind of practice that could be called Satanic," the statement said.

Wael Osama, a founding member of the Egyptian heavy metal band ENRAGED, defended the musicians from El-Weshahy's allegations.

"El-Weshahy made grave legal accusations against the metal bands. We should be concerned about the reactions of the public. After all, we recently saw what happened to the young man who was walking with his fiancé in Suez and was killed by radical Islamists," Osama told Ahram Online.

"I tried to use the media available to me to explain the metal subculture to the people of Egypt," he added. "I feel sympathy for this lawyer, since he may not be familiar with the metal subculture, and therefore may find it strange to see young people headbanging and wearing black."

In 1997, Egyptian police arrested some 100 heavy metal fans, including several who were jailed for weeks, over accusations they belonged to a Satanic cult aimed at spreading drugs and sexual freedom.

The Muslim Brotherhood is who der Obama and Hillary supported in Egypt. Not surprised by this at all. Get ready folks, it's gonna happen in the USA soon enough. The thought police and cultural activists have only begun. Another Obama term, your real liberty will be taken even more. What, don't believe me? It will happen under the umbrella of political correctness, hate crimes and diversity. Offending people (or possibility of doing so) is what will end up getting the cultural police in action. I know, sounds like a conspiracy - it is not though, read any of the writings from the leading leftists of the last century, it is all laid out. The Christians are not the enemy people - a big govt, out of control is what you need to be afraid of. Sneak peek can be found in the new State dept magazine, The State. Nice little article about historical phrases that we should not use because they are "offensive" - written by the Director of Diversity for the State Dept and adviser to Sec. Clinton. Words like "handicapped" "black and tan" "rule of thumb" and "hold down the fort" are all listed. Seems tame, but the underlying message is not - we care about the content out of your mouth and thoughts in your head and will begin letting you know what we think of that and tell you what you can and can't say. Right now there is no penalty, but what about in the future? And if you don't think extreme metal, especially the stuff with political content, can be construed as offensive or hateful (even if it's not), you need to rethink things. And leftist have long advocated censorship for radio (talk radio) and news - all in the name of equality. The PMRC was amateur hour, the leftist in power now have years of practice and theory on this. I'm not saying Mr. Romney is better, but his record does not indicate or support this kind of behavior or support of an ideology of censorship, only time will tell. We know where the current guy stands on this and that is scarey. I've never been afraid of the govt. like I am these days. It might not matter who is in power anymore, it has just gotten to big and to out of control. Both parties scare me.

@deepunderdirt

The difference between Republitards & Democunts is the same as the difference between Coke & Pepsi, sweet fuck all. They're all greedy parasites who'll shit on the Bill of Rights then wipe their arse with the Constitution if it'll make them an extra dollar. The only one who seems to be any different is Ron Paul & you can see from how he's been treated exactly what the corporations that own the US government think of anyone who wants to rock the boat. Do you seriously think that some new flies on the giant shit that is Capitol Hill will make a lick of difference?

Is playing metal easy in Egypt? NO.
Are hardcore muslim fundamentalists on the rise?
Yes, just like the hardcore christians.

Some people here make a lot of bold, generalizing statements.
So, how many of you have been to Egypt?

If not, please read it, I am not here for trolling.
I have been there 6 times, 5-6 weeks in last winter alone. Red Sea, Assuan, Luxor, Sudanese border, Western desert, Cairo, Sinai, you name it. 4,000 miles.
I WAS on Tahrir square, reporting from there on the political change, doing interviews - yes, also with the extremist minority(!)
So, did you also see the "no scarf" graffitis and the girls cheering?

Egyptian people are, for most part, very gentle and decent. And they are not all the same. You have Arab Egyptians in the north, Nubians in the south (who grow tasty weed by the way...) who have elements of central African culture, the bedouins in the desert are different as well. Did I mention the koptic Christians?

Now they have the Muslim brotherhood in the government, many people there don't like it and I don't like that either, even if they were friendly, offered me dinner, a place to sleep and good discussions when I met them. And of course they have the best command of English and the best manners.
They sure as hell don't send anybody off to kill, but to me they are dangerous because of their mentality, giving the country a bad name, ruin it and with the poverty making its way NOW the real bad guys have a chance to take over.

So, why did they choose to vote for the Muslim brotherhood?

Because there was no alternative, no credible party to govern a country like Egypt. Hosni Mubarak, who was supported by every Western government incl. the American, was peaceful on the outside which granted him cruelty on the inside. He had arbitrary people and political oponents beaten up, locked up, vanish, make their families pay, taking enormeous taxes from tourist guides and others. It was so bad people were just HAPPY he is gone. No matter who takes over after. And the Muslim brotherhood gave loafs of bread to the poorest of the poor who are living in the cemetaries of Cairo (picture a population of 20+ million) when Mubarak did not give a shit.

Every 5th Egyptian relies on tourism, and as every holidaymaker now seems to fear for his life. The pyramids, the historic sites are empty, people are desperate. Only the scuba diving industry is happening, but that's a mentality thing. BTW, do you have a clue how many Americans are working in the 400plus dive centers between Sharm el-Sheikh and the Sudanese border? More than in the Florida Keys, that's for sure. It's a big country.

Many statements I read here are water on the balance of the islamofascists and the sad thing is you don't even see it yourself.
If it was only some metal board just like this, it would not matter. The sad truth is that you tell your neighbors and teach your kids to not make a difference and hate them all. Just like the fundamentalists. You're just the same breed.

All people want the same, love, a certain amount of money to get by, a home, and so on. It does not matter if they're muslim or christians, atheists, or true worshippers of the almighty spaghetti monster in the sky.
It is ALWAYS the few nutcases giving a country/region a bad name... Hitler, Kim Yong Il, Castro, Chavez, Bush jr., enter a name of your choice

Those poor people over there are just now getting a taste of what the "Brotherhood" are going to do. What did they think was going to happen? More religion means less freedom, more oppression, less knowledge, less education everywhere, every time. These people fought and died for a freedom that they will never know with a muslim ruled government. What the hell were they thinking? The metal community should all take a stand and tell the people in Egypt that they have there backs and do something. Tell the Muslim Brotherhood to give them their freedom and let these people worship music for a change instead of false gods and fairy tales...

I cannot believe Hetfield's orange juice's has been thumbed down so much. The guy has been there, knows the country, and yet you couch potato bastards who probably don't even own passports think you know better?

You give America a bad name... Do you honestly think you don't have to learn things to know things? Because that's how it fucking works

There are more spree shootings in america than there are suicide bombings in egypt, and yet you talk shit about their culture and religion (even though millions of egyptians aren't muslim!!! The more you know. Google "egypt christian muslims shield" and prepare for a surprise)

People say americans are ignorant and arrogant, but I think it's only a few morons with big mouths and to much free time that are giving the rest a bad name

I know what you mean bro. I mean, what about that beheading of an infidel they had on Fox News recently. Some guy converted to Cristianity and they aired his beheading on live TV, I heard it was almost two full minutes of slow sawing with a knife to remove the head, before they held it up in the air and said some dirka dirka shit to the camera. No, wait, that was in Egypt, by the Muslim Brotherhood...on Arab television...silly me.

Thekarlmarxabortion - you are a prejudiced liar, egypt is 10% christian,, they did not behead a guy for converting live on TV... You have never been to egypt, you know fuck all, you have to make things up to back up your twisted worldview because it is totally insubstantial

Cite your sources. In any case, I never said no violence is carried out in the name of islam, but you obviously didn't quite understand the point I was trying to get across - you are probably so super smart that you have come full ciricle and have reached the point where you don't understand simple things anymore
