AGNOSTIC FRONT Frontman Has No Beef With METALLICA Over Similar Album Title - Sep. 3, 2012
Back in the late 1980s, fans of New York hardcore legends AGNOSTIC FRONT were a bit peeved at METALLICA for releasing an album whose title was very close to that of AF's 1987 LP, "Liberty And Justice For..."

AGNOSTIC FRONT vocalist Roger Miret recently spoke to Artisan News about his feelings on the controversy nearly a quarter century after the two albums were issued.

Said Miret: "You wanna know the truth about that? We were in L.A. playing Fenders Ballroom and Kirk Hammett [METALLICA guitarist] came to the show with, I forgot who else… And we were talking about stuff. He goes, 'Hey, man, what's going on?!' I'm like, 'What's going on?' We're just hanging out backstage. And I'm, like, 'Yeah, we're just out here promoting our new record.' He goes, 'What's your new record?' And Stig [AGNOSTIC FRONT guitarist Vinnie Stigma] gave him the record. It was called 'Liberty And Justice For…' Six months later, [METALLICA's] record comes out and it's called '…And Justice For All'. We had it before them and I gave the sticker and everything to Kirk so he could check it out. But it's no big deal."

He continued, "METALLICA is one of those bands I really always liked lyrically. They talked about a lot of sociopolitical stuff — a lot of good stuff. And they were just stating what we were stating to larger masses. And it's cool with me — absolutely cool with me."

I don't think Kirk had any say with the album title, that was generally Lars & James territory. Also, it's not like an entirely unique album name. Lars mentioned in an interview in the 80s that the album was actually inspired by an Al Pacino movie called ... And Justice For All and they heavily borrowed the themes, ect from that movie (and Johnny Got His Gun -clips of which they ended up using in the video for 'One'-). The only album title Kirk has ever come up with was Death Magnetic and even that was lifted from lyrics by James to the song 'My Apocalypse'

WTFyoutalkinboutphyliss?

Agnostic Front IS what Metallica WAS.

They're perfectly content with making music on THEIR terms, touring on THEIR schedule & not worrying about sales from box sets/"collections"/S & M/feature film/Garage Days Rev'd & Inc/LuLu/Binge-Purge/Cunning Stunts etc, released every Thanksgiving.
Why? There's no market for their brand of street music & they wouldn't have it any other way.
Metallica's about as street as Wall St.

...but it's a non-issue. I guarantee, the title of AF's album had nothing to do with Metallica's choice of title. 6 months later, the Metallica album came out. That means at the point Kirk got their record, the songs were pretty much already written and they were already in the studio, etc. Plus, as skadi09 pointed out above, it's a stock phrase, it's not like they created something unique. Was the guy who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance mad at both bands? Were his fans "a bit peeved" at them?

I'm sure Metallica are breathing a huge sigh of relief, panic over Roger Miret is cool with a twenty year old album title. Phew.

Why in the world would he have "beef" with Metallica? He didn't come up with the damn phrase. If anyone should have "beef," it's Mr. Frank Bellamy. Although, I imagine he's not too concerned about it at this point.

yeah nothing to see here, Metallica have used well known phrases and names for song titles before

For Whom The Bell Tolls
Fade To Black
And Justice For All
Eye Of The Beholder
To Live Is To Die
Sad But True
My Friend Of Misery
The House Jack Built
Carpe Diem
Where The Wild Things Are

etc etc

Do me a favor and fuck off with this irrelevant shit, Blabbermouth.

The way the headline is worded you'd think Vinnie Stigma had an army of footsoldiers marching up the Bowery, ready to board attack choppers to infiltrate Metallica's HQ, but Roger stepped in at the last minute and said "Chill Bro, them California cats is ai'ight"

GARBAGE.

First, It's not the same title! ...and even if its was, I dont think it would've taken away any chances at success from AF.
And, like a poster said earlier, K Hammett has no decision power over the direction of the Metallica, period.

Bands have stole from each other for years, Whether it be album titles, riffs, lyrics etc. Just part of the biss. Look at Led Zeppelin for example....

it is all coincidence. (A song from Excel comes to mind though. You know, the one that has the riff that sounds like Enter Sandman?)

Either way, both good albums. The only thing different now is that AF is still going strong.

So the controversy is, there is no controversy...and B'mouth making a non-story from Artishit News non-story. I bet the interviewer was praying he was going to hate on Metallica.
Great albums from both bands.

I'm thinking that there's also a good chance that Metallica had that album title and cover concept in mind for a while.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. If it isn't an issue, then why the fuck are you still talking about it??!! Oh wait, I know why...because only a few hundred people know who the fuck you are and now a few hundred more know. And you probably want Metallica to buy you a car, or clothes, or gear. Shut up and be happy you even had a record...

I have a demo of the song "And Jusice for All" and the music is all pretty much done, but James is mumbling a melody, he's not singing lyrics, which means the music was already done before the lyrics were added. So yeah, it's possible he was inspired by Agnostic Front in part. The movie And Justice for All also fits like a glove. Maybe he heard the AF title AND saw the movie AND THEN made the call? Whatever the case, AJFA remains Metallica's most underrated album and easily has the best lyrics of any of their albums. It's hard to believe it's the same band anymore. They totally went backwards lyrically.
