METALLICA's Cover Version Of DEEP PURPLE's 'When A Blind Man Cries'; Official Stream Available - Aug. 29, 2012
METALLICA's cover version of DEEP PURPLE's "When A Blind Man Cries", which will be included on the "Re-Machined - A Tribute To Deep Purple's Machine Head" album, is now available as an official stream via METALLICA's YouTube channel, Metallica TV. Check it out below.

Eagle Records will release "Re-Machined - A Tribute To Deep Purple's Machine Head" on September 25.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of this landmark album and in recognition of the influence of the band, and of "Machine Head" in particular. Some of rock music's biggest names have each contributed a version of their favorite track on the album to create "Re-Machined - A Tribute To Deep Purple's Machine Head".

There are two wildly differing versions of the album's most famous track "Smoke On The Water", one from guitar hero Carlos Santana with vocals by Jacoby Shaddix and one from alternative rockers FLAMING LIPS, and METALLICA have contributed their own special take on "When A Blind Man Cries", a track recorded at the "Machine Head" sessions but originally released as the B-side to "Never Before".

IRON MAIDEN's "Space Truckin'" cover was actually recorded back in 2006. Lead singer Bruce Dickinson explains, "Initially we didn't think we'd be able to contribute anything due to our touring commitments. Then we remembered 'Space Truckin'' which we'd recorded as a single B-side during our 'A Matter Of Life And Death' album session, but never used. However now, thanks to Kevin Shirley's remixing skills, we're able to include it on 'Re-Machined'."

Drummer Lars Ulrich of METALLICA, which is also recording a song for the upcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album, previously said, "We were asked if we'd contribute to the anniversary of 'Machine Head' — we can't turn that down. We're circling the Dio and PURPLE catalogs and hopefully we'll come up with something that is worthy of these wonderful men."

Initially released as a limited edition Classic Rock "fanpack" on September 3, this is a truly unique release that will appeal to rock fans everywhere.

"Re-Machined: A Tribute To Machine Head" track listing:

01. Smoke On The Water - CARLOS SANTANA
02. Highway Star - CHICKENFOOT
03. Maybe I'm A Leo - GLENN HUGHES, CHAD SMITH, LUIS MALDONADO
04. Pictures Of Home - BLACK LABEL SOCIETY
05. Never Before - KINGS OF CHAOS (Joe Elliott, Steve Stevens, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, Arlan Schierbaum)
06. Smoke On The Water - THE FLAMING LIPS
07. Lazy - JIMMY BARNES, JOE BONAMASSA
08. Space Truckin' - IRON MAIDEN
09. When A Blind Man Cries – METALLICA
10. Highway Star - GLENN HUGHES, STEVE VAI, CHAD SMITH, LACHLAN DOLEY (exclusive track)

A 26-minute "behind-the-album" video can be seen below.

Several of the tracks — including METALLICA's cover version of "When A Blind Man Cries" and CHICKENOOT's redntion of "Highway Star" — can be heard at UltimateClassicRock.com.

Lars is butchering Ian Paice's part with his absolute lack of groove, nuances and dynamics.

Kirk's guitar solo is actually pretty sweet. Agree about Lars' drumming, though. And I will forever hate Bob Rock for making James think he is a "singer".

After listening to that, I went and listened to the original...I suggest you all do the same.

I didn't notice Lars doing anything wrong or anything with the playing, it's just I don't enjoy James' voice anymore.

I wouldn't say Lars is doing anything 'wrong', it's just that he never changes up his style even when the rest of the band does. Loud, heavy song, he plays loud and heavy. Soft, mellow song - he plays loud and heavy.

Most drummers would try mixing it up with lighter strokes or even brushes to enhance the soft/loud dynamics. On the other hand, Lars' 'style' (or lack thereof, depending on your tastes) is prt of what makes his sound so easy to recognize. You could stick Lars in some other band, and, like it or not, you'd know it was him right away. I'll give him credit for that. Most drummers aren't so unique that you can tell them apart when they're playing someone else's music.

Well, James doesn't have that unique voice he had pre-Justice anymore, so has has to actually try to sing, and it's always sounded awkward when he does, unless he just growls. What can ya do?

This is actually a very good performance aside from Lars, who has absolutely NO feel for playing drums anymore.

Talk about flat and clumsy. The dynamics are nonexistent, he can't create a groove on his hi-hat to save his life, and his snare sounds like a wet cardboard box.

Just awful.

There's nothing wrong with Lars playing... but is poor and without doubt he don't have groove. How I told before, he needs to take a number of classes with John Tempesta, or another groover drummer.
I was wondering if Lars would evolve as a musician, as everyone does. Because no sense to regress as he did from the Loads for today. Respect for the fans would get over yourself ... always and always

This would be cool sounding if the drums had the right feel & groove. Sounds clunky & lazy. The rest of the guys actually sound pretty good on this one.

Good stuff. I think Laes should have stayed quite a ways back in the mix at the beginning of the song, but he comes across well after the first guitar solo. I liked what (Kirk) did at the beginning - not sure if that is a phase effect (I think it is) - probably phase/ chorus - whatever - I like it.

James' voice comes across well on this song - well suited match up. The whole band coming together in a beefed up crescendo is a nice touch. Good job.

When is James going to have the balls to tell Lars he sucks as a drummer? He needs drum lessons from Chris Adler.

It actually seems like he is getting worse not better. I loved the concert when Slayers drummer filled in. He played metallica songs better then Lars could ever dream of.

Lars is killing me with those incapable boring snare rolls. Just a sad drummer. He's obviously a competent drummer and progressive member of Metallica but a world class metal drummer he is not. Just watch any of the Lombardo or Jordison stand-in videos.

Some singers can't be copied, Ian Gillian is one. Perhaps Dio another. Covers don't always work. Bad covers are worse than no cover. Generally speaking, stay away from them. Write your own stuff, period. Comtemporary blows.
Look at the crap bands on TV talk shows and Carson Daly.
What a waste of equipment.

This cover sounds very uninspired, stiff and clumsy.
Lars has no feel or dynamic in his playing and his DM snare roll fills are very very old and boring.
The solo´s are pretty bad and sound like they weren't worked on to fit the song and practiced before the recording.
Hetfield´s autotuned or melodyne edited vocals are horrible.
And the production is way to loud & compressed and it clipps, and i cant understand why they choose to have such a weak guitar sound because MetallicA used to be band that had the crunch.

Hetfield's voice is getting annoying. I liked it better when he did not bother to sing. Now, anyone who knows a bit of drums know that Lars is playing like a rookie. He does not know how to replicate the snare drum stick, as does the original Gillan. This is a basic principle. Who will tell him? Does he read us? Will James will not tell him? Does he not see the faces that Trujillo does when he goes so much wrong in the parts that precede solos Trapped Under Ice, Ride The Lightning, or Disposable Heroes and so on.?

I am not a deep purple fan but Metallica's covers suck as bad as slayers covers. These guys shouldn't be allowed to cover anything at all. And yeah Lars is one shitty drummer when you compare him to others.
