'Trampled Under Foot: The Power And Excess Of Led Zeppelin' Book Due In September - Aug. 29, 2012
Faber has set a September 6 release date for the "Trampled Under Foot: The Power And Excess Of Led Zeppelin" book by British music critic Barney Hoskyns.

The 624-page book is described as follows: "A unique look at the history, adventures, myths and realities of this most legendary and powerful of bands, it is a labor of love based on hours of first-hand and original interviews. What emerges is a compelling portrait of the four musicians themselves, as well as a fresh insight into the close-knit entourage that protected them, from Peter Grant to Richard Cole to Ahmet Ertegun, giant figures from the long-vanished world of 1970s rock. Featuring many rare and never-before-seen photographs, it is also the first book on LED ZEPPELIN to cover such recent events as their triumphant 2007 O2 Arena gig and Robert Plant's Grammy-winning resurgence of recent years."

In a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, Hoskyns stated about "Trampled Under Foot", "Most [existing LED ZEPPELIN books] recycle tales of groupies and mudsharks and chucking TV sets out of windows. For me, this is terribly boring. I wanted to demystify the band but, at the same time, I uncovered stuff that's even more shocking. ZEPPELIN were the biggest band on Earth in the 1970s and were a law unto themselves. They drove through red lights in limousines, there were many brutish incidents of physical violence. Any mess was cleaned up very efficiently."

He added, "[I interviewed] nearly 200 people [for the book] and I had earlier interviews with [Jimmy] Page, Robert Plant and [John Paul Jones] in the bank. The sheer number of interviews persuaded me to repurpose it as an oral history, without an overarching narrator."

Really? Cutting Bonham out of the cover photo you chose? I know he's dead, but come on.

For all we know, Bonham may be on the back cover.

I believe there may be a slice of Bonham's shoulder there on the far right of the cover, and maybe a lock of hair...but then it could be anything. I could be stoned.

I read that 'When Giants Walked The Earth' by Mick Wall and it kept fucking me off with these sections written in the first person by the various key players. Totally fucked it.

But I don't feel that book made me think any less of the music, and that's what counts. It's not like I considered buying a dozen eggs to purposely make them rotten and use them as steenky missiles in a random attack on a crowded bus stop, just to, you know, lash out at society in general.

The Northern Summer is almost over. But there's still time for some rotten egg Summer fun peoples.

Do it.

Play your Judas Priest backwards, and then egg those bastards. Do it.

...and was a bit disappointed. All the "2nd person" pieces were just silly (IMO). Obviously, he was trying to get us inside everyone's heads, but I don't know if that was accomplished.

Hammer of the Gods was way better.

I can't imagine that this book ^^^ will shed any new light or tell any new tales that Zep fanatics haven't already heard 20 million times.

LZ are legendary because of the time period that they wrote(stole)/released their music. If "Crunge" was released today it would be the biggest fucking laughing stock in music history.

a time when people listened and artists took chances, and weren't pigeoned holed. Today, kids have the attention span of knats, they'd laugh at the Crunge because they've been force fed Nickelback and Green Day. (and all their copy cat bands). I suppose the Beatles, Stones, Floyd etc would be laughed at as well?

Nickelback is fake corporate rock, Green Day is a real band. Don't put those two together just because you don't like Green Day's music, they write actual songs which Nickelback does not.

I don't know if they would be laughed at, probably they would because they sound old or "retro", but to deny that the Crunge is a piece of shit song is just ridiculous. The rest of the artists you mentioned are actual songwriters. Led Zeppelin were pioneers of hard rock and metal, but they did not make that much good music, though they influenced others to do so.

Green day is corporate shite as well. Mall punk. They have a knack at writing catchy stuff at best, others could say the same about Nickleback.

Crunge is a fun little take on James Brown. Its tagged on at the end of the record, and you are picking maybe their most silly song of their collection. Its a fine little funky piece to me, but they were also weren't taking that song all that seriously, they used to jam the riff live previously...arguably their worst song though. I suppose I could do the same for any artist. Beatles certainly did some tongue and cheek songs.

the first 2 Zep records they stole, for sure. They certainly made those songs their own, but should have given proper credit. They wrote plenty of other great songs after that were their own...stealing was wrong for sure. I won't argue that...if you don't like their music later that they created, then that's opinion, nothing I can argue there either. I flat out disagree though.

Um, you don't you shit, but it's nice that you can delude yourself into thinking your opinions are fact.

Just because Green Day are "catchy" does not make them "corporate". Considering your other bullshit comments on this site I wouldn't expect you to be able to comprehend that, but whatever. Nickelback write songs for the radio, nothing more. Their lyrics are complete generic bullshit, their guitar riffs/melodies are non-existant.

Green Day have catchy hooks yes, but write actual lyrics, and write real songs and meldies. If you knew anything about their discography or their songs you would not talk that shit. Just because you turned on the radio and heard a couple of their songs and thought they were corporate does give you the fucking right to state that generalization as fact.

I didn't, I purposely said, you have your opinion, so I won't argue that, but my OPINION was different, I was trying to be unoffensive to your opinion. I could say the same the way you phrased your wording of LZ, they didn't have good tunes...you're entitled to that. I disagree, and while I'd rather listen to GreenDay over NB, I find them equally as vanilla. I do know a good chunk of their music, at least their first few CDs...I did say they have a knack at writing good hooks.

All I was responding to was your first remark, which was not written as an opinion. You said 'green day are corporate shite'. That's all I took offense to.

To be completely honest I do like some of Zeppelin's music, it's just a lot of their music (like Crunge) I just just find to be complete shit. Maybe I'm just irritated that I can't 'get' what everyone else gets about them, outside of a few tracks. I've listened to pretty much all their songs, and a lot of them multiple times. Songs like Dazed And Confused and Going To California people say are classics, I just don't get what's so amazing about them. That's why I said to me it just seems that they came out as one of the first bands with that sound and that's why they remain so popular.

Yeah, but Sebastian Bach from Skid Mark is having someone write his book, and so is Corey from SuckNuts, and so is EVERYBODY else!!!

At least LZ has some REAL fun stories to share!

Maybe we'll get lucky and the bass player from Enuff Z Nuff will get someone to write him a big book too.

That was a joke. A bad one.

There are a glut of Zeppelin books out there right now, but I read this guy's book on Tom Waits and it was excellent. If this is anywhere near as thorough and interesting, it could be a great read.

If my calculations are correct that makes...let's see...carry the one...move the decimal over... that's now precisely 45,236,349,431 books about Led Zeppelin.

Green Day not as big a fan. 'The Crunge' is great and fun song. LZ pretty much created metal, the first 2 albums actually came out in 69, before Sabbath. Probably my favorite band ever, actually.

First 2 records stolen? Seriously, everybody steals from everybody else if that wasn't the case their would never be any new music except weird experimental shit that sounds like it should be in the Star Wars universe. Even back in the days of classical musicians, Mozart himself admitted to "borrowing" some ideas here and there and made variations based on other melodies/pieces. Regardless, Led Zep deserves to be forever enshrined as one of the most influential innovators of our time alongside Hendrix, Clapton, The Beatles, The Who, Stones etc...
