AC/DC's 'It's A Long Way' To Be Added To Australia's National Registry Of Recorded Sound - Aug. 28, 2012
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, AC/DC's classic track "It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Want To Rock And Roll)" is one of ten songs which have been selected for inclusion in Australia's National Registry Of Recorded Sound.

Each year, the National Film & Sound Archive (NFSA) asks Australians to nominate their favorite recording, with 10 selected by a panel of experts to be added to the National Registry Of Recorded Sound.

From 250,000 sound recordings held in the National Film & Sound Archive, only 64 have made it on to the register since it began in 2007.

"It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" was the first track on AC/DC's album "T.N.T.", released in December 1975. The song, which was written by Angus Young, Malcolm Young and Bon Scott, is notable for combining bagpipes with hard rock guitars, drums, and bass guitar; in the mid-part of the song there is a duet between the bagpipes and the electric guitar. A slightly shorter version of the song was released as the opening track on the international version of AC/DC's "High Voltage" album, released in May 1976.

That's something I'd never have called AC/DC, learn something new or stupid every day.

First time hearing this song you'd never think bagpipes would do anything for it, but it just works.

Bon Scott just fucking ruled.

Being 1975, they battled that mis-labeling when they first started out. Promoters, radio-types and the like didn't really know what they were, so being loud and brash they were lumped in with that movement. Loud and brash, yes - but punk, no. It took a bit for people to get it and realize they were so much more talented than hacks like Sid Vicious. While I can appreciate punk's place in music's hsitorical timeline, and Johnny Rotten may still be around trying to sneer and flip the proverbial bird to "society" at close to 60, his act and the original punk movement's attitude are now irrelevant. Angus and the boys' hard rockin' sound and fury will forever live on....

I'd say that AC/DC's stuff with Bon should be registered into the Library Of Congress. 'Back In Black', too. Bon Scott was a wordsmith par excellence, he oozed rock and roll and a stick-it-to-'em attitude, his voice has character and he was an original. With a charisma all his own. I should watch the 'Let There Be Rock' movie when I get home. Bon Scott Indeed Rules! Well said, Jack Tripper.

Bon is Australian and Brian is not, so you can forget Back In Black being registered as Malcolm and Angus are from Scotland. Yes Sid was a hack, but never forget the Sex Pistols Nevermind The Bullocks album is a punk masterpiece. Long live AC/DC!

For those wondering, the complete list of songs (prior to this year's induction) can be found at:
http://www.nfsa.gov.au/collection/sound/sounds-australia/complete-list/

Personally, I think they should have added this AC/DC song in the very first year of the list. After all, no other Australian artist has been bigger than AC/DC, not even Kylie Minogue. I realise the list is not just about the famous acts but still, the likes of Skyhooks and Billy Thorpe should never have been included first before AC/DC. Something from Back In Black - supposedly the second highest selling album of all time - should be added too.

One night Bon & Angus are camping in the woods, suddenly Angus feels hungry and asks where he can get some food - Bon says it's a long way to the shop if you want a sausage roll

Thanks Tripper I guess I was wrong, but it is Wikipedia. He grew up and spent most of his life there. I also figured Phil and Mark to be from there as well.

Mal, Angus and Bon were from the UK, yes... but that's about it. They immigrated to Australia when they were children...

My mum was born in England and immigrated to Australia when also a child... I'd never call her English to her face... it's almost an insult.

AC/DC the BAND is Australian. The original members, as far as anyone was concerned at the time, were Australian. Where you're born and where you're from = two completely different things.

This song is so true on many levels. Bands get overpaid, ripped off, etc...

Having worked in the music/tour industry for years I have watched bands suffer everything they cover in the song. For those of you that are to young to remember when they first came out, people had no idea what to do with this band. Mr. Scott did have a punk style to him. He was loud, proud, fight anyone in a drop of a hat, and in your face. But one hell a guy and he had the magic on stage, film does not do him justice. He was truly an original and truly missed. For those of use lucky enough to wittiness his greatness on stage were truly lucky.

People referred to them often as punk band. Early on in the States, promoters tried to put them on punk packages. But after Black in Black, it did not matter, they owned the tour industry from that point on.

RIP Mr. Scott
