IN FLAMES Won't Start Thinking About New Studio Album Until Next Year - Aug. 25, 2012
PureGrainAudio's Mitch Lafon conducted an interview with singer Anders Fridén of Swedish metallers IN FLAMES at this year's edition of the Heavy MTL festival, which was held August 11-12 at Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. You can now watch the chat below.

Asked of IN FLAMES is already thinking about writing the follow-up to last year's "Sounds Of A Playground Fading" or if the band will continue touring in support of the latest CD, Anders said, "We'll probably continue touring for whole next year, and then we're gonna think about what we're gonna do. I mean, we already have some stuff in our heads, but the actual writing process is something that we do when we get off the road; we need to focus on that. The thing is that you have so much [free] time, really, when you're on the road, but we can't focus; I don't know what it is with us. There's so many distractions around you. I'd rather go out and have good food and good beer than sit by a computer and record. I do have my own stuff with me — I have a Pro Tools rig, I have a small, little keyboard where I can play… I do that. And I write, basically, for myself, just to keep sane. But, actually, IN FLAMES, musically, we need to relax a little bit and then start thinking about it."

On the topic of whether it's still important for a band like IN FLAMES to make full-length albums as opposed to putting out singles and EPs, Anders said, "For me, it is, definitely. I think about the album format. And I think today, it's actually more important than ever, when it's so easy to just release singles and small snippets of music and it's out there. I think it's important to still have that feeling. Maybe kids growing up today don't have that, but I'm too old school in my thinking — I'm used to that, used to the vinyl. I wasn't that fond of the CD format, because it was so easy to skip music — even though I have, like, one million CDs. But I'm more of the album type of guy."

IN FLAMES' tenth album, "Sounds Of A Playground Fading" (Century Media), sold around 14,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 27 on The Billboard 200 chart.

IN FLAMES' previous CD, "A Sense of Purpose" (Koch) opened with 20,000 units to land at No. 28. This was slightly less than the opening tally of "Come Clarity" (Ferret), which shifted just under 24,000 copies in February 2006 to enter the chart at position No. 58.

The only thing they should consider is their next jobs. This band has been the Swedish Metallica since 2002; a monstrous disappointment to a great early legacy.

Thx SO much for this!
Info regarding what a band won't start thinking about for months, in ANY capacity, is always a fascinating read.

Good... they deserve another year to ponder about how horrible their last couple of albums have been.

Until they go back to what gave them the right to be where they are now i think it's safe to say nobody really gives a fuck if they start working on a new album tomorrow, next year or never.

I disagree. Year 2002 and RTR accordingly gave them the right to be where they are now, and that was the turning point, i.e. they became mainstream, they abandoned the original MDM roots and jumped on the modern rock/alternative/pseudoMDM bandwagon, old fans turned away and new fans appeared. So them going 10 years back would effectively mean repeatedly churning out late IF era music, which is a bad thing.

There guys simply need to return to their very roots, period.

As long as they stray away from the sound they had on A Sense of Purpose I might be interested. While nothing they've released in the past 10 years has been stellar by any means, I feel that Come Clarity was their highest point in that time frame and A Sense of Purpose was their lowest point. Sounds of a Playground Fading was solid overall even when considering the poppy final track.

But then again, they will never make another Jester Race, Colony, or even Clayman for that matter...

Maybe you should start thinking about returning to a good band again and not worrying so much about trying to fit into a scene or selling records.... it isn't working! Pussies!

...the new album "Sounds of a playground Fading." So I can't comment on it, but I do have every other one. Every album from this band offers something a little different. Even with out one original member remaining, they don't deserve the shit from you brainless self absorbed nit wits. I might add, In Flames are mightier than Jester Race, so take that album out of the player and spin something else from the. Most bands would give a left testicle to have written In Flames first 5 albums.

that some headlines lend themselves more easily than others to humorous bashing, and I am hoping that this is mostly the case here. I can't believe that that many people on this site actually dislike In Flames THAT much. C'mon....

This band released album after album of amazing melodic death metal for years and deserve more respect from the metal community. I guess all of you only listen to the most extreme, one dimensionally predictable metal bands around and throw them away as soon as they lighten up a bit for evolution and creative reasons.

They have changed and evolved over the years and now sound more "accessible" and less "metal" than earlier works, but for many of us, the newer stuff is still solid work, too, and certainly not worthy all of the childish bashing. If this story were about some less successful and "real" tough guy metal band you'd all be singing their praises, please. Quit this poser act all ready.

In addition, Anders is a damn good lyricist. I hope he shows his chops a bit more on the next album.

Thing is, In Flames will never be what they once were. Theyir fan base is huge now, why would you abandon that? If you read reviews online majority are written by kids just getting into metal and they love new In Flames

They sell a lot of albums in the US because of the high mainstream volume of musical bad taste.

and everything they have been involved with......Lunar Strain to Sounds, Passenger, Dimension Zero, Hammerfall and Gardenian. Oh and its Jesper that left the band.....not JESTER!!! Nic is a good replacement because of his years involved with the band in various instances.

If all the bands stopped at discs you like and continued making the same disc.

Don't like it? Go away then. Go find some other cult band to be the sole fan of.

This band used to put out solid melo-death with every album, now all they write is shitty, generic radio rock. A damn shame really.

A Sense of Purpose was an incredible album and the new one is very good also. Jester Race, Colony, Clayman, and Whoracle, which is my personal favorite, were great albums also. Sure, Come Clarity was pretty bad, but it was the only one that really stunk. Once in a while good bands make bad albums sometimes. Look at Iron Maiden's Virtual IX or whatever. I still actually think there is some great stuff on even that album. My point is that In Flames has done some changing, but I think we will still see some very stellar stuff from them in the future. You have to look at the big picture with these guys. They have put out way more great stuff than bad stuff.

I agree on the fact that they are still awesome, but `Come clarity? stinking? `Sense of purpose? incredible? Methinks it is the opposite, just my opinion.
