MASTODON's SANDERS: 'I'm As Excited As Anyone Else' To See Where Next Album Takes Us Musically - Aug. 25, 2012
Onslaught Radio conducted an interview with bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders of Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON earlier today (Saturday, August 25) at the Reading Festival at Little John's Farm in Reading, England. You can now watch the chat below.

On the band's ever-evolving sound:

Troy: "The four of us in the band, we always embrace change and we never wanna write and record the same album twice. So we want each album to be a different and fresh chapter in the MASTODON catalog. That's our intention — to write and record a new-sounding album every time."

On MASTODON's plans for a new studio album:

Troy: "The future is very unknown, I think. After these two festivals — the Reading and Leeds — we'll take some time off and start working on new ideas. And I'm as excited as anyone else on this planet to see where we'll take it musically. I have no idea."

On whether there is pressure on MASTODON to write music that will please fans and critics:

Troy: "We never really tried to cater any riff, any song, any sound to please any [particular group] of fans, any type of journalists, any critics or anything outside of the four of us. Once the four of us leave our practice space after writing a song, or even a riff, or even one line of lyrics, or something, if the four of us agree on it and are proud of it and are happy with it, then that's all that really matters. Because we need to be happy with it ourselves, 'cause we're going to be married to this music for life. And we really just write the songs, and we do everything to ultimately please ourselves, and if it carries over to anyone else around the world and they like it, then that's just a wonderful dessert at the end of a giant, delicious buffet."

really with the exception of a few crappy covers this band has yet to disappoint with a studio release. Look forward to the next tour. They really do keep outdoing themselves live. Saw them on the Crack in the Skye tour and it was pretty good, but they were amazing on the Hunter/Heritage tour. Keep it up!

I thought The Hunter was their weakest effort to date, but still miles beyond the other garbage that gets played on the radio these days.

Even though all there songs sound exactly the same. At least they kept me awake during the coma I went into once opeth came out during their tour together.

BTW Ghost blew both Opeth and Masterbate off stage!

One band with no talent blew away 2 bands that are very skilled musicians? You sir are very simple minded to say the least.

I have a pretty cool/funny story from when I went to see Converge/Priestess/Mastodon in St. Louis on February 3rd, 2007. Blood Mountain.. it was great, but I hate Converge and during their set I noticed Brent Hinds walking through the crowd so I took the only chance I had and went to chat with him for a minute. Later after that, he walked to the bar and asked the bartender for some tissues, put them in his ears and proceeded to walk to through the middle of the crowd. Priestess was pretty good, but Mastodon killed it, even finished with Hearts Alive. After the show I got to hang around with Brann and chat for about 15 minutes about all sorts of things music. I asked where his RR kit was and he said "Oh, it's over in Europe. I'm having another one made soon". The way he said that was funny. Then got to hang with Bill for a few minutes, chat, autographs on tickets, the works. Fucking great time. A year to the day I went to see Down in Indianapolis and got a pick from Rex. 2 killer shows.

Mastodon really are one of the most creative forces in metal. I feel sorry for metal fans who don't see this. Each to their own, but Remission, Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye and The Hunter each have so much uniqueness and character.

Sure, maybe they don't have stadium headlining potential, or aren't trooo enough to please the trolls, but their take on metal is unquestionably their own. I salute them for it.

Looking forward to new material!
