JACK RUSSELL Wants Legal Dispute Over GREAT WHITE Name To Go Away - Aug. 22, 2012
"The Classic Metal Show" recently conducted an interview with JACK RUSSELL'S GREAT WHITE vocalist Jack Russell. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On whether the reason he fell into a harder run with partying was due to the heavy emotional baggage that came along with dealing with the after-effects of the Station Fire incident:

Jack Russell: "You know, I have to admit that it has a lot to do with it. I've been through numerous counselling sessions about that. That was put on my shoulders. And at first, I made comments like, "Well, I've got big shoulders" and stuff like that, but in the end, nobody can handle something like that. It was a tragedy...so many people lost their lives. The ripple effect of that... you can't even imagine how big that is. And every time someone wants me to talk about the fire, I just can't anymore, because no matter what I say, I hurt somebody's feelings. I piss somebody off. I don't say something right, or somebody doesn't think I'm remorseful when I should be. You know, this was really, really hard on me. And I'm not saying that it wasn't hard on anybody else, too, because certainly it was harder on most people than it was on me. Nobody got out of that place unscarred, physically or mentally or psychologically or spiritually. It was a really horrible ordeal, and I'm sorry it ever happened. But there was nothing I could have done about it. And if there was, I would have."

On whether he can foresee ever repairing his friendship and working relationship with his former GREAT WHITE bandmates:

Jack Russell: "You know what? I like to think that time heals all wounds. I've been trying to keep my mouth shut. We all had a few things to say initially, and I said, 'OK, look, let's just shut it down with the words now.' And I was watching this video [interview with my former GREAT WHITE bandmates] the other day, and they're still going on and on and on, saying stuff like, 'Jack wasn't involved in the songwriting.' It's like, OK, well, I've got more songwriting credits than anyone else, so figure that one out. Then Mark [Kendall] was saying, 'Well, Jack's name must not mean much or he wouldn't have to use 'Jack's Great White.'' And I'm thinking, 'Well, why don't you go out as 'Mark Kendall' and we'll see how good you do.' Then the interviewer asks them, 'Since you guys own the trademark, how come it's such a hassle with the court and everything?' and they just kind of him and hawed. And I'm thinking, 'Guys, c'mon, you don't own the trademark, and that's why we're going to court.' Then they were about how their publicist is doing such a great job of keeping things from being confusing with all the advertisements. There was just one show in New Mexico where [the ad] had eight pictures, and they were all with me. So it's like, 'Guys, just shut up! You're not getting anything right, so just don't talk about Jack at all. Please!' That's all I want to say about that, But as far as wanting to get back together again, well, if they stop being idiots, who knows? But every time they open their mouth, they stick their foot in it. I'm just getting tired of it, man. I just want it all to go away. I want the lawyers to handle it, and the courts to handle it, and I just want to sit in my house, my boat, whatever.

On whether he feels that his value as JACK RUSSELL'S GREAT WHITE is diminished with the other version of GREAT WHITE out there:

Jack Russell: "Well, absolutely, because people still don't understand…. Not everybody reads all the Internet tabloids and all that kinds of stuff. They have regular jobs and they don't get on Facebook. They see GREAT WHITE playing at so-and-so. 'Oh, yeah, I love those guys.' They hear the songs on the radio and they don't know that there's some other dude singing. They go out [and see the show] and they go, 'Guys, sounds really not good. What happened? Oh, it's another singer. Oh, wow.' And by the time, it's too late then. It's important. And they say they're taking care of all this stuff to make sure people know. That's the only reason I didn't just take the nameGREAT WHITE when I left. And I didn't… And this is the thing… See, I didn't leave. And that is the big misnomer here. When I made my first press release, I said I'm taking the name of the band I started and moving on. At that time, I was the president of the corporation Shark Touring, which was the corporation that ran GREAT WHITE, that paid the bills. I was the CEO, and Mark was the vice president' we were the only two officers and members of the organization. Michael Lardie and Audie Desbrow and everybody else, they were all just hired musicians. So I fired them all. When I said, 'I'm taking the name,' that means, 'You're fired.' But they didn't wanna be fired, and neither did the manager, because that's his gig. . . I'm just so upset because every time I turn around, there's one more thing in the press, and it's not correct. I'm so sick of hearing Michael Lardie talk about how I didn't write any songs. Gee, Mike, I've got more [songwriting credits] than anybody. It's like, c'mon, man, tell your wife to quit writing what you're supposed to say and just be a man.

Jack: there was nothing you could have done about the fire? Your band was playing bars for a few years at the time it happened. How many gigs in bars did you play in with pyro? That's what I thought too, so see, yes, you could have done something-like question those behind wanting to have it during your show. I saw you in a bar once too, and there were barely any colored stage lights let alone pyro.

The way I see it a band hires someone to take care of that shit for them. And Great white did have a person that was supposed to do this. Jack didn't involve himself in things like the pyro because he wasn't supposed to have to. Do you think that Tom Brady of the Patriots worries about whether the stadium fire alarms are working before he goes out and plays a game?

If pyro is being used I think the band woudl have to know about it so they would know where it's unsafe to stand on the stage. Ask Hetfield.

Nobody gives a fuck if you give a fuck, honestly.
I love how all these youngsters have to come into articles about older bands and classic bands and show how they coudl care less. They're too cool for these old dudes' music.
There are a thousand of these new fangled shit bands that I could go into every article and say "who gives a fuck", but I don't. What's the point?

Well sure he does! It's cutting into what little attendance he has at his shows, not to mention the legal fees. I really thought it was over for all these guys after the fire, so it's amazing we are even talking about 1, much less 2 versions of Great White in 2012.

Gotta agree with my man Rockroadie1x above.... he , as I am obviously aware of the way things work.. Jack (Was) the leader of that band and he knew that they were breaking the law by bringing illegal pyro into that tiny tiny room ( I know I've been there)... therefore all the results of that illegal act could have been prevented if he had only come to realize what the rest of us know.. that they never were an "arena" act they were a bar band, and bar bands don't get to use pyro without the possibility and unfortunately the reality of the catastrophic outcome that they had at the Station. So I hope you live with the horrible knowledge that you are personally responsible for the deaths of 100 people and ruining the lives of 1000's , no matter that the lawyers were able to put the blame on everyone but you , go crawl away and die of old age... unlike the people who you did not give that chance to.
Oh and before all the comments come defending him come in I'll say it again, if you don't agree with myself and RockRoadie.. your WRONG!

That fire was the direct result of what goes on in the country all the time.
Poor local laws not kept up on by local municipalities.
It is the job of those in the local government to enforce those laws and regulations. With very few exceptions this is almost always the case with things like this. If the local authorities had kept up on it this would not have happened.
If they had made sure this bar had kept up on their fire code stuff this would not have happened. Instead - tragedy.

Then...drop the lawsuit?....
You are a shadow of a man, let alone a performer.
Are you still sitting in a chair to perform???
I say go out as Jack Russel, you've garnered enough publicity with this sham to get your name out by now.

You are so wrong on this that I feel sad for you.
The Band brought in illegal fireworks... what public office should have known that was going to happen?.. regardless of what fire codes were not in place that night the fact that THE BAND brought in illegal pyro and THE CLUB allowed them to use it was what caused the fire.. I am stage professional with almost 30 years experience and I held a pyrotechnics license in the neighboring state of CT at the time of the incident... the fact that the band themselves were not held responsible is the real breakdown in the system. I'll type slower if anyone still doesn't get this fact. I'm sorry if your a fan of Great White... and you can take that anyway you want it but they were accomplices in the deaths of 100 people and do not deserve any sympathy.. if there are 2 versions of Great White touring I would hope that would mean more money going to the victims families ... but that again is another great breakdown in the system because I'm sure that isn't the way it works.

i always believed, legally or not, the bar owner was to blame for the fire. he used cheap flammable packing foam crap for soundproofing, which he bought from a guy who lived near the bar; and it was on him for letting gw and other bands use pyro, which he should never have let them do. how was gw to know the asshole used packing foam for soundproofing? that bar was a firebomb waiting to happen ...

How about one side call themselves Once Bitten & the other side call themselves Twice Shy? It worked for back to back cd titles. LOL

Bar owners were at least partially to blame for sure... for mostly allowing them to use pyro at all... they too knew they were breaking the law.. but the legal system is so flawed that the company that MADE the foam somehow got held more responsible (fined) than the band that most definitely broke a bunch of laws by possessing/transporting/using any pyro at all without following not only any legal use of pyrotechnics but without even having a god damn fire extinguisher around to put out the fire the second the gag went bad.
Can you really blame a club owner for going to home depot and buying some foam to cut down on noise... that seems to be something that most of us would do in the same situation.. that being said, the fire marshall should have caught it and removed it before it became an issue , but again .... no band = no pyro / no pyro = no fire.
Fuck Great White in all their forms.

I saw both WASP (Helldorado tour) and King Diamond (House of God tour) at The Station before the fire at the Great White show and BOTH bands used pyro in that club - WASP had the flaming logo (it was set up in front of the drum riser, not above it like it usually would be), and King Diamond used his flaming coffin. I'm sure the CLUB OWNERS were the ones that okayed Great White to use the pyro since they let others do it previously. So - and I'll type this slow so your remedial brain can process it - IT IS NOT THE BANDS FAULT!!! They were just doing what others had done before them. So fuck you and the horse you road in on!

That's the opposite of what he's been doing. He hasn't shut up about it. I agree that Great White wasn't an arena band anyway. They were playing small clubs and bars so who cares about the name. This fire thing and this band name thing has gotten them more exposure than their music ever did.

I say put Clown to (actual) work by putting them all in one room together, Jack on one side, Great White on the other and the first person that opens their mouth..

WHAMMO!

And Clown knows a thing or two about smacking things with a bat doesn't he?
