MEGADETH Taps Producer JOHNNY K For New Album - Aug. 22, 2012
MEGADETH has once again tapped Johnny K (full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with DISTURBED, SEVENDUST, MACHINE HEAD and STAIND, to produce the band's new album, tentatively due in early 2013.

According to MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine, Johnny "is arriving tomorrow to start pre-production" on the new CD. He adds, "This should be a very interesting record."

Mustaine recently told NME about the direction of MEGADETH's new material, "Some of it's a little darker, some of it's a little faster. Being in this position right now, not knowing where we're gonna go or what we're gonna do, it's kind of like the world's ours to do what we want. Are we gonna go back to the speed and thrash metal roots that made us who we are? Are we gonna experiment and rely on the melody that we've discovered in MEGADETH songs?"

Mustaine also spoke about how he likes to keep MEGADETH's music more melodic than that of most thrash bands. "We've tried to do that in MEGADETH, have a little melody so that it's not just the same old grinding music like everybody else has," he said. "We're just happy to get going and get to the studio."

Johnny K produced MEGADETH's last album, 2011's "TH1RT3EN", which was recorded at Mustaine's Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California. Mustaine previously stated about the recording process for "TH1RT3EN", "We've got a great new partner with Johnny K. I mean, I was satisfied with our last co-producer, with Andy Sneap, and Andy really took us — and he even admits — as far as he could take us, and it was great because we wanted to go back to the big leagues where we were, and we feel that Johnny is, obviously, a big-league producer; not that Andy isn't — don't get me wrong. But we feel that this record is definitely one of our best. It's a great feeling, because, you know, finishing some of the last record, I can honestly say, in my heart I knew that it wouldn't contend with some of the great records in the past, just because of the timing, the label that we were on and stuff like that. Lineup changes and stuff… But I really think that everything just lined up for this record."

"TH1RT3EN", sold 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart.

The CD marked the recorded return of bassist David Ellefson who was part of the band's classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band's legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with MEGADETH in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This was the first time Ellefson has played on a MEGADETH record since 2002's "Rude Awakening".

Megadeth's best lineup is and will always is going to be Mustaine/Ellefson/Friedman/Menza. Rust in Peace is a metal landmark.

WRONG. Samuelson/Poland/Ellefson/Mustaine was the best lineup. Rust can't even compare to Killing Is My Business or Peace Sells.

KIMB is more aggressive, but definitely not better. and Peace Sells is obviously a landmark too, but Rust in Peace is Megadeth's greatest accomplishment, and also early 90's thrash's landmark album. All the retro thrashers today are writing songs identical to that whole album.

...both "Peace" albums to be on an equal footing. Both are 10's, all-time classics and my 2 favorite 'Deth albums.

I really dug "Endgame" as well. I thought that was an excellent return to form. "13" not so much...I listened to it, but barely remembered it. I'll give it another shot...

I hear what Dave's saying about melody, but Megadeth is at their best when playing full-on thrash like the Peace albums.

Done and done...

Following a protracted period of basing his worldview on tin-foil-hat signals from the ether and a misreading of the teachings of some chap who was mostly on about loving the poor and being humble and modest, Dave Mustaine recently pulled his head out of his red-pubed anus just long enough to declare that any disparity between his current level of success and that of "The Danish Satan" was a plot engineered by the Obama administration that would ultimately lead to all his guitars being taken away and a New World Order government.

Really, what a fucking tool this man has become.

I heard Johnny K was taking Dave's payment and sending it to Obama

I always liked Dave's music and do not get too caught up in what any musician says, Liberal or Conservative. With that said, I wish Dave would talk less about everything: Metallica, politics, other bands, ex-band members, religion ..... he does seem like a real dick at times and is his own worst enemy

Mustaine has been lost since Countdown. I wish he'd just put out a good old school thrash album for once and stop beating around the bush flirting with this mainstream embrace wish. The last thing this band needs is another polished pop metal turd. I couldn't care less what he says about politics, never have.

After Dave Mustaine's terrible comments about the shootings, he and his band can go fuck themselves. I will NEVER buy another Megadeth recording, or pay money to see them.

Dave Mustaine is a hateful deranged piece of filth who no longer deserves the support of the metal community. He sure is NOT a Christian, and does not embody any Christian values.

He has balls, not like the politically correct pussies in other so called metal bands. I think Megadeth has gone a bit downhill with 13, but you never know with Dave, this next CD could melt your face. Peace Sels, Rust in Peace and Countdown were all good offerings, but so were The System has Failed, United Abominations and Endgame.

Now he's so right wing I don't even know him anymore. As far as a "classic line up" is really hard to comment on. Being a fan of the original group it's hard to go against that, but Rust In Peace is a masterpiece and even though not as metal Countdown To Extinction is not without its merits. Sad part is Youthanasia stunk and they never truly recovered. The point is moot now as that producer better take a fee instead of points because I sure as fuck ain't buying it and judging from other fans comments I think Dave finally committed commercial suicide.

I feel you but I disagree. Look, aside from music and singing what else is Mustaine and always have been? A BUSINESSMAN. Just listen to what he's saying now. It's all about business. Note how whenever he says something stupid and outrageous he always follows by talking music biz. He first looks at what is en vogue to talk about and what would raise eyebrows. In 1986, it was controversial to have a song about a bona fide satanic hexes and rituals and to criticize government, well, always popular, thus "Peace Sells". In 1988, there was a baited-breath expectation of nuclear holocaust, "So Far, So Good". In 1990, The U.S. invaded Iraq the first time and there was the IRA controversy with his dumbass comments, plus the former record's sentiment could be put to rest with the end of Cold War, thus "RIP". In 1992, foreclosures, uncertainty about America's future with a lousy president (George King the Senior), were the talk of the day, plus there was ethnic genocide all over Africa, vide "Countdown". "Youthanasia" may have been mostly about Dave, but "Cruptic Writings" raises issues like gun control in "Have Cool, Will Travel" curiously with lyrics suggesting a strong favor thereof AT THE TIME. You could go on and on. And today- it's cool to be Obama hater so he goes along with the trend. Money talks, bullshit walks. Don't deprive yourself of music on the account of his sleek marketing campaign.

I really could give two shits what any of the bands I listen to, believes in when it comes to Faith, Politics, or whatever, they are not my moral compass.
I listen to them because they make music with a pulse.

Maybe people need to sit down & re-read some of Megadeth's songs from the beginning & then ask themselves just whom those songs were about.

Then look at today & see if there is much difference in what America is doing from then till now.

Cuz from my window the guy in the office has changed but our policies are the same.

If you trust any government, you must not read History, & maybe that is why it continues to repeat itself.

I wish America would wake up and see that it's Obama and his commie nazi dictatorship and their suppression of guns and free markets that is leading to the decline in the quality of Megadeth's lyrics and music. Obammy is putting fluoride in the water, which is rotting Dave's brain. Alex Jones has a fascinating article on the subject. IT'S THE ONLY LOGICAL EXPLANATION PEOPLE.

instead of putting out albums like thirteen yearly, why not take like 2 or 3 years, get rid of the generic crappy songs (maybe release them as bonus tracks or an EP) and just release one really awesome metal album every 2-3 years instead of the yearly album where there's a handful of songs that rules but then you have to sit through a bunch of filler tracks.

although thirteen wasnt such a great album as a whole, there were some really amazing songs on it such as neverdead, whose life, public enemy, new world order and thirteen. neverdead had the best riff i ve heard from all the classic thrash metal band albums in recent years and the song was killer from start to finish. new world order had some great moments too like after the 2.30 mark when the song becomes fast paced all of a sudden with one cool riff after another followed by a solo. the new album should have more songs like these.

My favorite songs from this album were the songs written prior to 2011, with the exception of Never Dead. The rest are just decent or shitty. Johnny K had too much hand in writing the bad songs on this album. I fear there won't be another good Megadeth album unless Andy Sneap comes back into the fold.
