THE SMASHING PUMPKINS To Perform On 'The Tonight Show With Jay Leno' - Aug. 22, 2012
THE SMASHING PUMPKINS will perform "The Celestials" from their current album "Oceania" this Thursday, August 23 on the "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno", their first national television performance since the album's release.

The band is coming off a successful tour of Australia, New Zealand and South Korea that ran from July 26 to August 14. They headlined festivals and, at their own shows, performed the acclaimed "Oceania" in full, followed by a set of classics and deep cuts.

Although the material on "Oceania" is part of the PUMPKINS' in-progress 44-song cycle, "Teargarden By Kaleidyscope", frontman Billy Corgan told The Pulse Of Radio why he decided to carve "Oceania" out as its own album. "We decided to release 'Oceania' as a standalone project because we'd been doing a song at a time as part of the 'Teargarden By Kaleidyscope' project, and we found that because of the voracious nature of the Internet, our songs were being swallowed up so fast that people didn't even know that they'd come out," he said. "So when we looked at it, we said, what can we do that will garner at least some length of attention? An album, of course, would do that, at least for that one hour hopefully."

"Oceania" follows up 2007's comeback album "Zeitgeist" and is the first PUMPKINS record to feature the current lineup of Mike Byrne on drums, Nicole Fiorentino on bass and Jeff Schroeder on guitar.

Oceania technically is within the middle of Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, but we get what you're saying. Thank god they save the musical spots on The Tonight Show for the last five or ten minutes. Watching that robot Jay Leno is excruciatingly fake and boring.

Let's see, he replaced his female bass player with another female bass player, never mind a person's bass abilities, he specifically wanted to hire a female bass player.

He replaced his second generation Asian guitarist with what another second generation Asian guitarist, never mind a person's abilities, he specifically wanted to hire a second generation Asian guitar player.

Even his new drummer slightly resembles a younger version of his former drummer.

Or am I just seeing things?

This is not SP. This is a Billy Corgan solo project. You'll never reproduce the magic that was the Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie era lineup. I love Billy, but those original SP albums were great because of his band.
Same goes with Danzig. The 1-4 albums are the best because of his band. Sometimes, members are interchangeable. Not the case with the Pumpkins. Not the case with Danzig.

I feel exactly the same way, but with one big difference: GISH is THE record from this band. Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie are great records, but they had FIRE on Gish, which they never had after that. Iha's solos on that album are killer, as are the songs.

This is NOT Smashing Pumpkins. That was a BAND. This is a dude who hired people on, and yes, it DOES seem to me he tried to directly "replace" each of the original members, which is kinda creepy.

Billy Corgan is an awesome song writer. Everyone knows probably hovered over james and Darcy when they made those first three albums. It's always been his project. His solo album was awesome. I wish he would have kept it up. He chose to get new people. Hate to say it, but I really think the songs would sound slightly the same no matter who was in the band. The new drummer is actually pretty awesome.... I never thought it would be anything without Jimmy, but proved wrong again. Oceania has a real dingy prog-rock feel to it. Hope to hear more.

Oceania sounds like a record made by a proper band. That, and the songs are really happening. It's a very cool album.

Obviously he's replacing his band with similar members like that. Not to mention he's a huge douche. Just look at that shit about him saying Soundgarden is reforming just for the money. Pumpkins = Way overrated. Radiohead = Way better.
