SLAYER's KERRY KING Says JEFF HANNEMAN's Recovery Won't Hold Up New Album - Aug. 21, 2012
California thrash metal legends SLAYER have spent the last year and half touring without guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who is still recovering from necrotising fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease, which he is believed to have gotten from a spider bite. At last year's "Big Four" concert in Indio, California, Hanneman joined the band onstage for a two-song encore, but he hasn't yet been able to tour again.

Asked if Jeff's absence has delayed the recording process for SLAYER's new album, the band's other guitarist, Kerry King, told Artisan News (see video below), "Not yet. We've recorded very little. We got a little bit done. We had a 12-day window where we hijacked [producer] Greg Fidelman from METALLICA and worked with him a little bit. So we've got two [new songs] done; they've gotta be mixed. We've got two other ones that need vocals and leads. [There are] three other demos and three other [tracks] we still have to demo. But [this summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour] is the last thing we're doing, so hopefully we'll get [the rest of the album] done before we pick up and tour again in October."

Hanneman did not take part in the recent recording sessions, but his absence did not affect the new labum's scheduling since King typically records all the basic guitar parts himself.

Regarding whether he ever thought one of his bandmates would get sidelined by such a rare condition, King said, "You hear about it, but I didn't even think we had that kind of spider in California. And I really think at the end of the day it's a speculation, because his arm was so fucked up, I can't imagine them even finding where they think it started, if you had my opinion. But, you know, that flesh-eating stuff, you can get scratched by a nail, you can get scratched by anything, and if you don't take care of it, it's gonna turn into something like that. But whatever got him, that is what happened — he had had the disease."

Hanneman is being temporarily replaced on the road by EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt, who has been described by King as "the Glenn Tipton of our era — really good, really polished and nobody talks about him. To this day, nobody really references [JUDAS] PRIEST and Tipton that much as guitar players and I feel the same way about Gary. EXODUS have a huge following but a little more overlooked than METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER, ANTHRAX — the 'Big Four,' so to speak, so [it's great] to be able to bring him to the forefront and shove him down people's throats and say, 'Hey, this motherfucker kicks ass. Pay attention.'"

Kind words from Kerry. Hope he continues to sing Holt's praises after he leaves Slayer. Or is that Mustaine who trashes all his former bandmates? I get confused between their mouths.

King said, "Hanneman is currently not in slayer, Holt is."

Holt's gonna be in a situation where he's gonna be needed in both camps. Which way to go, which way to go. It's good that he got the opportunity to play in Slayer and get the exposure he deserved. Kings forcing the issue quite a bit lately.

He doesn't even KNOW what's gonna happen with Hanneman and it's almost like he's talking about him in past tense.

wow.

Fuck that it's always asked in a half assed way and answered in a half assed way.

1. Did Jeff write any songs or riffs?
2. Will he record solos?
3. Or will the album be made (written, recorded) by only 3 members of Slayer?
4. If so, why not let Gary contribute something?
And for the brave interviewer:
5. Is it really health at that point that prevents Jeff's return, or does he has more of an ultimatum to "really" learn back how to play guitar or are there other problems with him that we don't know about?

It would be awesome to get these things clarified, I think Araya is less okay with Jeff's abscence, but for Kerry it got more of a currently normal situation until they (he?) decides to revoke it, time passes and many people feel there's something more to this whole thing. They rush with writing and recording a new album like suddenly the world would end when there's no new Slayer music this year, which is especially suspicious if it turns out Kerry will write all music on the CD.

The real shitty thing is if they had a problem with Jeff's playing or Jeff's habits, and just in his life-threatening condition they found a perfect opportunity to deal with this.

I have serious doubts he got this disease from a spider bite. If he went to the amazon for a month I could understand. You very rarely get bitten by such a spider in California. He might be very unlucky OR he had some habits/did something wrong which triggered the whole thing and it was left uncared for for too long...

Whatever it is, I have a really bad feeling over this. Jeff might be out of the picture sooner or later and that would be really bad news. He always wrote better material than Kerry and the absence of his contribution to this album just won't do it for me. No Hanneman = No Slayer

Brown recluse. They are nasty little bastards and can easily cause this kind of problem. It's why I smash spiders as soon as I see them in and around my house. We have some nasty stuff in the southwest and I'm more concerned with brown recluse than I am with black widows.

I don't follow this band anymore, so I have no idea, but is it possible they are contractually obligated to put an album out and can't for Jeff? But if that's true, it would beg the question, why is Que.. er, King always dodging the question?

Jeff has been gone a long time, and it looks as if he may never be healthy enough to tour with Slayer again. The interview asks about the future of Slayer, not Kerry's personal relationship with Jeff. I think Kerry kind of sounds like he is looking ahead in case Jeff can't return. I truly believe Holt could fit in perfectly, and would stay in Slayer as long as they wanted him. If they are under contract to put out a CD, Holt deserves the opportunity to play on it. Just my 2 cents?

When asked if Jeff's absence has delayed the recording process, King's response is, "Not yet." I may be reading too much into this, but it seems that King is looking for an excuse to kick Jeff out of the band.

Kerry King is just honest. If Hanneman is still in bad shape, he gives way to someone else. Slayer's most important and irreplaceable member is their drummer Lombardo after all.

A nail, huh? Sounds like Kerry is pretty much trying to intimate that Jeff got it from a needle.

I had my suspicions...the spider story seemed too unbelievable.

Jeff's always been a reclusive guy, but in the last 8-10 years he's been pretty much invisible, and his live guitar work indicated that something hasn't been right with him.

I just hope he's on the mend regardless of what happened.

And I can't see Gary joining Slayer...he's a natural band leader, and Exodus is his baby. I doubt he would want to subordinate his songwriting and guitar-playing, both of which are superior to Kerry's.

I've seen Slayer with Gary live twice, and he was down WAY low in the mix. His leads were almost inaudible compared to Kerry's.

Dave is more important than Tom and Kerry??

Were you in a coma during the '90s?

Dave's an important part of Slayer, but even a drummer as badass as him is replaceable under the right circumstances. Paul Bostaph proved that.

Without Tom or Kerry, it ain't Slayer.

If Slayer is built around a ,business model' like a lot of bands are these days, they can vote Jeff out of the equation easily. I seriously doubt Tom would support such a move and Lombardo, since his return, has the power to do whatever he wants as he knows Slayer needs him right now.

My prediction is:
Kerry records all guitars for the new album. Jeff gets listed in the album anyway. Another tour with a stand-in guitarist (whoever it may be) and then Slayer calls it quits. Countless compilations and live stuff gets released. We learn later that Jeff had nasty drug habits and Kerry wanted him out. We also learn from Tom that the feeling in the band was ripped apart years ago after Bostaph left and that kerry keeps going with Zakk Wylde on some trendy tough-guy music. Lombardo keeps drumming for various projects.

Sad but potentially true.

Well I laughed when he talked about a nail, a spider or... I had Henneman's problem and a big problem it is. I fell on icy stairs and open my leg up on the metal stairs. 4 months later i had the flesh eating desease. Pain and skin litteray falling off my leg. Within 2 days in had it from my ankle to the knee and they almost cut off my leg.

That being said, it took me 6 months and a couple surgeries to have a leg that was somewhat functional. 1 year later, I could start walking again normaly but with some pain but i felt ok after 20 months.

Good luck with your guitar playsing , and i sure hope that KK will have the patience to give you time to recover. If not, he is an ahole...

P.S. I do understand that they should continue while waiting for Hanneman, but give Hanneman his place back when he is ready for it.

I had to watch the interview twice because I didn't hear Kerry say any of this stuff:

"kind words for Gary"
"Gary was in, Jeff was out."

Kerry did seem non-committal about the source of Jeff's disease though, obviously something is there that isn't being talked about.

I've been a huge fan of Slayer since I first heard Hell Awaits in 1985 and even back then it wasn't a secret that King & Hanneman didn't get along. After the tour they would move to different cities and only speak to each other while recording or on tour. Jeff and Tom were best buddies though, pill popping coke heads from way back and as proof, Tom recently said something to the effect about Jeff's absence, "Man all the work we did and now it's paying off and you're missing it!"

King also probably isn't too impressed with Jeff's recovery strategy. Flying across America in Nov 2011 to follow around Ruyter Suys and 'Dick Delicious and the Tasty Testicles'. Obviously there to bone her etc but he's a rock star and that's what rock stars do: cheat on their wives with other rock stars. Anyway, here's the link: http://www.dickdelicious.com/index.php/2011/12/dick-delicious-winter-world-travesty-tour-southeast-tour-diary/

About spider bites and the possible symptoms:

That tells me that the story about Jeff's absence from the band is simpy a true one. And there's lots of ways in which such a bite might end; I guess Jeff's one is one the most severe.

Lets hope he'll recover soon and rejoins the band on stage and above all, that the new album won't take too long!

I'll make a re-post:

SLAYER Frontman: JEFF HANNEMAN Will Return To The Road 'When He's 100 Percent' - July 5, 2011

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=160323

...he was really, really bad. So we'll wait for
him to get better, and when he's a hundred percent, he's gonna come out and join us."

Araya told Billboard.com that SLAYER will not return to the studio
until Hanneman has fully recovered.

"There's no way we'd go into a studio without him," Araya said. "As a band we're not going to do something without him. He's an integral part of the band. We require his musical skills, his writing skills. He's an integral part of the band. So we're going to hold off until he's at 100 percent and can join that process and be part of it."

So, MY QUESTIONS to King would be:

1. How many riffs and songs Jeff has written for the new album?
2. Has Jeff recorded anything for the new album?
3. Will you keep waiting for Jeff's full recovery before you record or will you ask Gary Holt to make his contributions?

4. Besides Jeff's current health problem, are there any other problems with Jeff that are holding him off from recording and returning to Slayer?

I wouldn't have to be a "brave interviewer" to ask direct questions. As a fan of this band, I would like to know and ask so that I could know. There's nothing to be afraid of when interviewing Kerry King - he's just a human like the rest of us. Kerry King can have a bad mouth if he wants to, but it's just talk. And even if he stormed out of the room or smacked the interviewer in the head because of the questions, so what?

If he wasnt shooting dope, drinking like a corner bum and following around god awful overweight pig and was actually focused on recovering and rehabbing, He could be back in the band if he wanted to by now. Its not like he doesnt have the resources for good doctors or the time to rehab.

Either way, if he wanted a vacation or left the band to do heroin, the drama has created some nice mystery buzz about the new album.

I might be in the minority but I would love to hear a Slayer album with Gary Holt.
Gary is a great thrash guitarist and he has been tearing it up with Slayer.
I seen them last year and Gary was killing it.I would even say he was better than Jeff and I love Slayer with Jeff but they gotta keep moving on.
Hope Jeff gets better and comes back but if he doesn't Gary should stay with Slayer and still keep Exodus going.

There's nothing nice about this. We're talking probably the LAST album from Slayer and whether or not Jeff has written any of the music and whether or not he will record parts on the album...and will he ever return and if not, what's behind it? What is the general situation with Jeff? Is he out because he's still recovering? Or is he out for other reasons as well?

Why are they continuing to make the album without him, after Tom having clearly stated that they will wait for Jeff? If they are doing this without Jeff for an indefinite time, they should just pull their pants down and admit it for fuck's sakes.

Some journalist has to get with Jeff ans ask him questions. Then the same journalist should go to Kerry, Tom and Dave and see if they tell the same thing. I am sure there,s something nasty hidden from the press at the moment and Kerry does control damage until the new album is out.

Is it that hard for journalist to ask clear question and try to get clear replies or are Slayer's PR filtering what's asked and what's published?

Yeah, I find a little weird that every time a band member is asked about Jeff, they're like, "I haven't heard from him or spoken to him but he's recovering" or stuff like that. One would think they would keep more contact as band members, as friends, specially in a situation of one of them being sick, I don't know. Is there something they're not telling us about this?

I've seen Slayer once with Jeff and the second time was with Gary Holt. It didn't sound like anything was lacking with Gary, in fact I thought they sounded better! I would totally go to another Slayer show if Gary continued to play with them.

I'm not here to jump to any conclusion, but could it be Hannemans bad habbits got worse after the bite during his recovery?

Come on Jeff, post a statement on the official website!

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Hanneman

"Hanneman wrote the music for most of the band's fan favorites, songs such as "South of Heaven", "War Ensemble", "Raining Blood", "Angel of Death", "Mandatory Suicide", and "Seasons in the Abyss", which have all become staples for live performance at Slayer shows. Hanneman's favorite album is Reign in Blood, and he enjoys performing the songs "Raining Blood" and "Angel of Death."[1] He has contributed lyrics and music to every Slayer album, forming a music and lyric writing partnership with Araya, which sometimes overshadows King's creative input.

Hanneman has contributed both lyrical and musical material to every Slayer album and wrote the songs "Raining Blood", "War Ensemble" "South of Heaven" "Seasons in the Abyss" and "Angel of Death", which are played at almost every live Slayer show.

Oldschool right here, buddy. You and I are probably two of the very few Oldschool mutherfuckers who cut our teeth on cassettes of Unleashed in the East, Show No Mercy(vinyl), Raven, etc. on this site. Let's be patient, youngsters. I hope Jeff comes back soon coz you and I both know that Jeff writes the best shit. Kerry has his moments too, though (Ghosts of War). Stay heavy and healthy, buddy.

Old school? Besides the fact he sounds like a 50yr old man trying to sound like a teenager, you seriously think this guy really doesn't have time to share the 'inside' information he has? lol Please.
