Hear METALLICA's Cover Version Of DEEP PURPLE's 'When A Blind Man Cries' - Aug. 20, 2012
Eagle Records has announced the release of "Re-Machined - A Tribute To Deep Purple's Machine Head" album on September 25.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of this landmark album and in recognition of the influence of the band, and of "Machine Head" in particular. Some of rock music's biggest names have each contributed a version of their favorite track on the album to create "Re-Machined - A Tribute To Deep Purple's Machine Head".

There are two wildly differing versions of the album's most famous track "Smoke On The Water", one from guitar hero Carlos Santana with vocals by Jacoby Shaddix and one from alternative rockers FLAMING LIPS, and METALLICA have contributed their own special take on "When A Blind Man Cries", a track recorded at the "Machine Head" sessions but originally released as the B-side to "Never Before".

IRON MAIDEN's "Space Truckin'" cover was actually recorded back in 2006. Lead singer Bruce Dickinson explains, "Initially we didn't think we'd be able to contribute anything due to our touring commitments. Then we remembered 'Space Truckin'' which we'd recorded as a single B-side during our 'A Matter Of Life And Death' album session, but never used. However now, thanks to Kevin Shirley's remixing skills, we're able to include it on 'Re-Machined'."

Drummer Lars Ulrich of METALLICA, who are also recording a song for the upcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album, previously said, "We were asked if we'd contribute to the anniversary of 'Machine Head' — we can't turn that down. We're circling the Dio and PURPLE catalogs and hopefully we'll come up with something that is worthy of these wonderful men."

Initially released as a limited edition Classic Rock "fanpack" on September 3, this is a truly unique release that will appeal to rock fans everywhere.

"Re-Machined: A Tribute To Machine Head" track listing:

01. Smoke On The Water - CARLOS SANTANA
02. Highway Star - CHICKENFOOT
03. Maybe I'm A Leo - GLENN HUGHES, CHAD SMITH, LUIS MALDONADO
04. Pictures Of Home - BLACK LABEL SOCIETY
05. Never Before - KINGS OF CHAOS (Joe Elliott, Steve Stevens, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, Arlan Schierbaum)
06. Smoke On The Water - THE FLAMING LIPS
07. Lazy - JIMMY BARNES, JOE BONAMASSA
08. Space Truckin' - IRON MAIDEN
09. When A Blind Man Cries – METALLICA
10. Highway Star - GLENN HUGHES, STEVE VAI, CHAD SMITH, LACHLAN DOLEY (exclusive track)

Several of the tracks — including METALLICA's cover version of "When A Blind Man Cries" and CHICKENOOT's redntion of "Highway Star" — can be heard at UltimateClassicRock.com. "When A Blind Man Cries" is also available for streaming in the YouTube clip below.

I'd put money on it that 99% or maybe even 100% of the people who already posted had never even heard this song before - its not on the original vinyl. It's been available on different releases but you have to seek it out. Metallica did a really nice tribute of the song. Do you all think that Kirk really gives a rat's ass what you think? The answer is no - he laughing all the way to the bank with his hot wife in Hawaii as he's walking down to the beach to surf - after getting home from 6 sold out shows in Mexico City. The BM haters are just pathetic. Sitting in mama's basement, picking your zits, watching porn, and having an Internet connection doesn't mean you have an opinion that actually matters. You should actually stop smoking dope, go back to school and start contributing to society instead of being dead beat Obama entitlement losers.

Get so fucking sick of the ignorant commentary on here. It's why I usually just read the actual article and then go away. MetalSucks is the same way, except the writers are even more pathetic.

It's cool that metallica is achieving a relatively honest sound these days, it really doen't sound ultra produced beyond capturing a good representation of what a mic'd amp or drum kit sounds like (in a good room with good gear) . But there limitations as players are really showing. Great they're being honest and at their point with as much money as I assume they have, and the amount of fans who would but anything they make, they just don't sound like they're trying. While I'm not super familiar with the original Deep Purple track, I'm a casual fan and this really doesn't seem to do them justice.

I love the original and its intensity obviously cannot be matched, but it's a pretty cool cover.

I hated Ulrich for declaring metal dead back in the press then in '96, but right now they're almost as good as in 1993 if they hit a good day.

Fresh sounding and direct, this is a good version. Metallica sound like a "regular" rock band, and that's a good thing.

Jame's singing is incredible, to say the least. I still prefer the days he barked out his lyrics ala Ride the Lightning, but this is a professional band. A few years ago I was speaking with Mr. King Diamond (no joke here) and he said that Metallica's soundcheck/warmup before a show blew him away. He said they were as professional as any rock band ever was.

Why so many Tallica Haters? It's because they are successful and can do anyting they want and most Metalheads hate mainstream. If your 10 year old cousin likes Metallica, how can a hardcore headbanger like them? Right?

Look Metallica's best stuff might have been in the past, but that goes for Maiden, Priest, Megadeth, Slayer...etc. Let go of the hate and if you don't like them, just don't support them...and shut up!!

Hetfield sounds amazing, and amidst the annoying unnecessary snare rolls you can actually hear quite a lot of tasty drumming by Lars. Rob sounds solid. My only complaint oddly enough is Kirk (especially towards the end of the song.... lay off the wah a little bro)

I didn't like anything about 'Lulu', but I thought James sounded good and strong. This vocal performance reinforces that for me, and am looking forward to hearing what he comes up with for the next album. Sure do miss the big, heavy drum production Lars used to have, ala 'Black Album'.

Strong vocal performance? You can hear him making snorting and slurping sounds in a few places (example 1:12) and generally sounding like an amateur having a cold trying to do a country song in a karaoke, his voice trembling from difficulty. There's no obvious out of tune singing probably only thanks to studio tricks, but the vocals sound forced as hell.

They should really tune down permanent, there's so many stuff nowadays where it sounds like he's singing far above his range. I'm not a fan of downtuned guitar sound, but even Zep did it for Plant and it worked - singers get older, voices get lower, instruments accomodate.

love the original, the cover is good, quite faithfull to the original in the first part but with done metallica-style in the 2nd part. not sure if I like the change of tempo but overall it's a good cover. I'm really looking forward to Bonamassa's take on Lazy and of course the old purple man Glenn Hughes' Maybe I'm A Leo... was always wondering why they didn't play this live when he was in the band, it suits him, at least in theory.

everyone defending metallica's version and how great they, read this:

maybe some us of just don't like them. i personally think hetfield's vocals suck, starting on and justice. and hammett's wah use? it deserves all of the criticism it gets. he's not a bad player, but folks use it as a crutch. don't give me that "it's just his style" crap. it's laziness.

If any of you kids ever managed to listen to the original Purple song, you'll realize Metallica had an interesting take on it. It's a side of them we rarely hear and they manage to get away with it well. Lars even managed to get his playing in place on this one. The snare is obviously mixed too high but that's another story.

Good cover!

The production sounds terrible. There's clipping, and its way too compressed. It really shows at the end when lars starts playing a little harder and distortion comes in. They need to get the hell away from fidelman if that's who did this recording.

As a long time Metallica fan and fan of Metallica covering other bands/artists, i must say this.
James vocals are either autotuned or edited to hell with Melodyne.
Lars butchers Ian Paice´s drumming.
And both the rhythm and lead guitar work is way far off from the original and rather bad.
The only member that does OK in this cover as a musician is Robert Trujillo.
The sound, recording, mixing and mastering is just awful loud and compressed to clipping and it sucks out all the dynamics, life and soul out of this originally Great Great dynamic and soulful Deep Purple song (and one could think that the lead vocals place in the mix in metallica has been replaced by a clipping snare).
And since they decided to record a Deep Purple cover and decided to keep Jon Lords part in it then why in hell didn't they use a real Hammond Organ in stead of a lousy keyboard.

Totally irrelevant song and cover! One hearing and that´s enough. Everyone will forget this version as soon as possible. Lars don´t try to even more reinvent the way you play the snare drum... that´s getting worst and worst since St. Anger. I will say it again - go practice and study, or take your retire.
