ANTHRAX Guitarist On Why 'Mayhem Festival Cruise' Was Canceled - Aug. 19, 2012
Earlier this month, it was announced that the first annual Mayhem Festival Cruise — which was scheduled to set sail on Friday, December 7, 2012 from the Port of Miami, Florida and travels to the Bahamas, returning to the mainland on Monday, December 10 — was canceled.

Last week, Jason Simms got a chance to interview Scott Ian for an upcoming feature on ANTHRAX in The Oregonian. While Jason had Scott on the phone, he asked the guitarist for his thoughts on the cancelation, since ANTHRAX was to be one of the voyage's headliners. Here's what he said in its entirety.

"I saw the press release [announcing the cancelation], and we were as surprised as everybody else. We were literally out on the [Rockstar Energy Drink] Mayhem [Festival] tour when we heard that the cruise was canceled.

"It's a bummer. We were all really looking forward to it.

"It's funny because us MACHINE HEAD, LAMB OF GOD, we're all good friends, we've all known each other forever. None of us had ever been on a cruise before. We were all in Europe this summer playing festivals together and we were like, 'What do you think of this cruise thing? What's your take on it?' Everyone was kind of like, 'Alright, it's a little weird, we're going to be stuck on this boat for four days,' but everyone was excited that we were going to get to hang out and all get really shitty and have a lot of fun. I know all of us were bummed and I heard from the MACHINE HEAD guys that they were bummed.

"Yeah, I don't know why [it was canceled]. I can speculate and think that maybe in this economy, it's kind of tough to sell a ticket for that much money. You get all these bands and it's three days on a boat, if you break it down to what it's costing you per day, it doesn't seem like a lot of money. But I understand where we're at in this world in 2012. People just don't have that kind of money to shell out. I can only assume it comes down to that."

Mayhem Festival Cruise promised to offer fans a chance to experience a blistering 90-minute set from each one of six killer heavy metal bands — LAMB OF GOD, MACHINE HEAD, ANTHRAX, HATEBREED, SUICIDE SILENCE and KINGDOM OF SORROW — as well as additional showcase sets from Century Media, Metal Blade Records, Roadrunner Records and Sumerian Records artists, including GOJIRA, PERIPHERY, BORN OF OSIRIS, BATTLECROSS, OTHERWISE, GIRL ON FIRE, ANTI MORTEM, and GYSPYHAWK. Mayhem veterans JDevil (Jonathan Davis of KORN) and DJ Starscream (Sid of SLIPKNOT) were also slated to perform full DJ sets each night.

Unless you were independently wealthy or have disposable fundage I didnt see the average joe attending something this extravagant. That's not to mention the line up left a lot to be desired.

I was gonna say something along those lines. I don't think the average metal fan (13-2x) has that kind of money to spend on a cruise. The people that can afford that kind of ticket are more than likely, older generation that doesn't like metal.

70k tons of metal cruise you have 40 bands with each of them playing 2 times in the span of 4 days. And the shows are all day and night.
How many times was Anthrax going to play?

Just throwing this out. Is it possible that the fans of these bands just aren't as wealthy as other genres. These cruises take place all the time. And of course chicks don't usually like this type of music. Advanced ticket sales must have been crap. And was Randy B. going to be able to go ?

Heavy metal comes from the working class and it's working class music. I've been hoping for this since I started hearing about these cruises. Metal for the people, not the prancing capitalist class!

If you can afford to just up and go on an overpriced cruise, then metal's just not for you. Heavy metal comes from the mines, the steel mills, and even these days I suppose the shitty offices where you have to make your boss's coffee. People going on cruises are the bosses whose coffee gets made for them - the antithesis of heavy metal.

Probably because most of those bands have really young fanbases who couldn't convince their mommies that sending them on a cruise is a great idea. It is convincing since some of the cruises that specialize in underground metal reported success. These cruises and the ones with washed up legacy acts have a much older fanbase who'd be more likely to shell out the cash and get time off work to go on them.

this is bandwagon jumping idea with a shitty line up! nobody cares about it, therefore there were no ticket sales. If it were the economy as scott thinks, then why would the barge to hell be sellling so many tickets? why did it sell out last year?

Scott eiter is clueless or doesnt want to admit the obvious.

I think metal fans would pay for quality bands. NOT Anthrax. Anthrax is a serious joke. I wouldn't go see Anthrax for free and if they paid me to watch their tired old asses try to half ass play their songs.

G.E.B. you are a fuckin idiot of the highest order. 70k tons sells out every single year WAY before it sets sail. Just because your broke ass can't afford to travel, doesn't mean other people can't either. This is one cruise cancelled out of about a dozen that happen each year. The others sell just fine.

...he was the Eagles football team coach years ago. He choked on a pork chop sandwich at a public restaurant while listening to Anthrax music. After a restaurant patron saved him, it turned out to be none other than Charlie from anthrax. Buddy wanted to repay him for saving his life, Charlie responded, "NOT!" What does this have to do with this news story? In other news, Dave Mustaine said today, and I quote, "America, not Egypt, the chains are on!" Dio was 5 foot nothing but could sing well, he is buried on the mayhem cruise ship.

When I hit metal shows, it's generally with a couple friends (90% of the time these friends are dudes) The wives/girlfriends generally have other plans or stay at home. If it's a heavier group I think my wife may be able to tolerate (aka not a set full of blast beats, cookie monster vocals, and 32nd+ note guitar patterns) I will make an attempt...most of the time this would be a local show with a cover price under $10. I don't know how many people are in this situation with me, but I'd wager it's a fairly common one. Now filter in trying to talk your wife/girlfriend into a $1500 venture complete with at least a week of vacation time ate up.......yeah.

When you find a girl that likes the same things you like. Then, she wants to go to those shows just as bad as you do! The girl I'm with now would kill to go to one of these cruises and it looks like next year will be the year we schedule one.

I've done the whole being in a relationship with someone with different tastes in music. It doesn't work for me. Music is a huge part of my life, and shows/concerts ect. are just as important to having fun. Nowadays, I couldn't be with someone who did not share my muscal interests. Would never work out.

I was against the idea of those metal cruises from the start. People can barely afford spending money down the pub anymore, what on earth do these guys expect with their $1500 concerts? 'Walkingbeard' may have said it in a clumsy way but he's sort of right. Music needs to be brought back to the people. Metal came from third-rate suburbs. Posh kids and middle class hipsters didn't get it until the Norwegian black metallers turned it into elitist conservative bullshit.

Reason is simple - these bands plays too much everywhere, and everyone knows them very well. You can see them at festivals, or at local club tour. They are not fresh news. Second point - price is too high. Since most of these bands and greedy as fucks and their music sucks, it should be 3x lower minimum, maybe 500$.
Fans have spoken by not buying up this shitty offer, so now Robb and Ian can whine about it.
