KILLSWITCH ENGAGE Bassist: Singer HOWARD JONES 'Didn't Quit' - Aug. 17, 2012
Bassist Mike D'Antonio of Massachusetts metallers KILLSWITCH ENGAGE told BostonGlobe.com that the band's split with Howard Jones was necessitated by the singer's struggle with personal issues, including diabetes that had gone untreated for several years. "It became very apparent we had to move on without him," D'Antonio said. "Howard didn't quit."

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE earlier in the year announced the return of Jesse Leach, who sang on the band's first self-titled album, which came out in 2000, and on their landmark 2002 Roadrunner debut "Alive Or Just Breathing". Leach left the band in 2002 and was replaced by Jones, but his work on "Alive Or Just Breathing" has always been revered by diehard, longtime KILLSWITCH ENGAGE fans.

"We heard Jesse was coming back in the band even before he said he wanted to be back in. He did eventually contact us, and said he was excited to come back," D'Antonio told BostonGlobe.com. "But there was this little management voice in the back of our heads saying, 'Make sure you make the right call on this.'"

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE is hard at work on material for the follow-up to 2009's second self-titled album. The new effort is tentatively scheduled for release in early 2013 via Roadrunner Records. Basic tracks for around 16 songs have been laid down, and vocal ideas for two songs have been recorded, with one of them, "No End In Sight", having recently leaked online.

"I didn't write much for KILLSWITCH [in the last couple of years] because I didn't know what was going to happen with the band," D'Antonio said. "But I did write with my old OVERCAST bandmate (current SHADOWS FALL singer Brian Fair) in our side band DEATH RAY VISION. That got me back to my roots of playing really aggressive music, and that aggression bled all over the stuff I started writing for KILLSWITCH."

To all you 'diehards' out there, Jones was the best thing that happend to this now terrible band.

End Of Heartache is a great record.

I agree...he added a uniqueness to them... Now they're just yet another screamo band. All those bands look and sound alike.

Howard commercialized their sound. Jesse is a hardcore/metal singer and will help bring this band back to greatness. Alive or Just Breathing destroys anything Howard did with them.

Might I actually dig the vocals again? I always thought the music was pretty cool, but they have gone kinda radio metal lately. Maybe it will be a bad ass album.

That's some first rate liberal thinking right there. They fired him because they needed to keep producing, simple as that. It's business, not feelings and emotions.

No, they fired him because he was being a lazy loser who was not doing what he was supposed to. The diabetes claim, maybe its true and maybe its not, is just another ploy for howard to get sympathy. Bet the band all rolled their eyes when he pulled out that one.

Cool for those of you sticking up for him though cause rest assured his big ass is reading all these comments while downing some cheesecake. Dude had a really good voice, its too bad he screwed up his chance.

Well... Maybe let him go because he refused to get it properly under control. Not many things in life are black and white (no pun intended).
Anyway I agree with a poster above, Jones was unique. I didn't like the operatic vocals at first but it grew on me and TEOH quickly became one of my favorite records.

Because he was a shit bag. His vocals sucked. So glad they got the real singer back Jesse. Also so glad not to have to look at a black guy in KSE. Too many of blacks and gay people everywhere these days bing rammed down our throats.

I like Howard and wish him nothing but the best, especially with regard to his health, but Jesse is the true voice of this band. AOJB is light years beyond TEOH, both musically and lyrically.

When AoJB came out, it was very original at the time. They are now not just another "screamo band". Actually, based on what you said, they now sound like what other have tried to copy for ten years now since THEY, along with Jesse, released AoJB.

The End Of Heartache was certified Gold by the RIAA on December 7, 2007. Alive Or Just Breathing still hasn't. Just like most of you all say, the masses don't lie.

Jones > Leach

Agree that 'AOJB' is their masterpiece, and Leach is a great voice for the band. But when he left Jones gave them a unique soulful voice that made them stand out from others in the genre. Yes, the formula kind of ran out of steam, but it's not fair to just blame Jones. I am excited to see what they come up with now that Jesse is back, but people need to accept that Howard took them to the level they are at now!

One previous comment nailed it. Killswitch Engage of the gazillion -metalcore- bands out there was special because of the Howard Jones element, which made them unique. Now is just a bunch of guys who want to return to compete with all this emo crap metal core bullshit. I still don't convinced at all of Jesse Leach. Maybe if Adam D. just keep his project Times of Grace with him , and searched a similar guy with the vocal range of Howard, that would be perfect.

and im happy about it. I really felt Killswitch was on a downward trend after the release TEOH. There latest self titled album IMO was the biigest low point. It really felt that the band just wasn't into anymore. I'm glad Jesse is back because i'm hoping he will breathe new life into this band haha. I'm looking forward to what they come up with.

As Daylight Dies was so, so bad. I remember at the time being aghast at how generic it sounded. Personally, I do not rate Howard at all. He sounds too much like a crooning pop singer. The bite, bile and aggression that metal needs is absent. Even his screaming sounds forced, and just like an interruption before the next big chorus.

Jesse, ten years ago, sounded angry, wounded and melodic all at the same time. The clincher now is how he sounds today and how they use his voice. The key thing on AOJB was the SPARSE use of melodic chrouses. When they came, they hit you square in the eyes.

Will they deliver? I'd say the odds are 50-50.
