METALLICA Frontman On Eight-Show Run In Mexico: 'I Don't Think We Could Do It Anywhere Else' - Aug. 16, 2012
METALLICA frontman James Hetfield spoke to the Mexican radio station Ibero 90.9 last month prior to the band's eight-night run at Palacio de los Deportes (Sports Palace) in Mexico City. You can watch the chat below.

"To play anywhere in the world for eight shows is unbelievable," Hetfield said. "I don't think we could do it anywhere else. Mexico City stepped up, and every [concert] we put on sale, there was another one [that was added] and another and it kept going. It was crazy! We probably could have kept going, as the passion here is unbelievable."

METALLICA's July 28 show in Mexico City marked the debut of a new 140-foot-by-50-foot stage that features "colossal components and striking visual elements spanning METALLICA's entire 30-year career."

"The stage that we're doing — the kind of the 'best-of' stage — is pretty dangerous and pretty unpredictable," Hetfield said. "There's a lot of things that can go wrong. [laughs] Pyro and fire and things falling and… I don't wanna give away too much, but there's a lot going on. A lot. So every show will be different of these eight, I think, just because of the fact that things will be working differently. We haven't really rehearsed a lot on this stage — maybe a week, production rehearsals — so it's gonna be crazy. It's gonna be a lot of fun."

A nine-minute montage of the "best effects" in METALLICA's new stage show — captured during the July 28 opening gig of the band's eight-night run in Mexico City — can be seen below. A post at the group's web site said, "What an amazing first show with the new mind blowing stage. During 'Puppetz', lighted crosses came up from the stage, 'Battery' saw pyro and coffins, then we had Nothing. 'Enter Sandman' was up next, and that's when shit really hit the fan! Loud bangs, random fireworks, falling towers, falling spot light guy, falling scaffolding, guy was caught on fire, then a complete blackout."

Video footage taken at the gig initially made it seem as if a malfunctioning pyro launcher caused two road crew members to be engulfed in flames during the song "Enter Sandman".

The show was stopped and the men carried out on stretchers, after which METALLICA resumed playing. A spokesperson for the promoter said it was "all part of the show."

METALLICA performed at the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco this past weekend and is scheduled to play two shows in late August in Vancouver, which will be filmed for the band's upcoming 3D movie.

hmm, well, let's see, if you were listening to Metallica 20 years ago that means you were at least 13 years in 1990- judging by the youngest aficionado I've seen capable of competitive critical judgement of music. That would make you at least 35 years old today.

No self respecting 35 year old man will come to blabbermouth to troll about Metallica, unless you're

A-) A complete loser with no life or
B-) A kid trying to be a smartass behind a keyboard on the internet

Now, you should be grateful that I'm leaning towards option B when it comes to judging you, because there's definitely nothing more pathetic than a middle aged man with such a sad life that instead of going out and getting an interesting enough life that won't give you the time or energy to give a fuck about trolling on blabbermouth about Metallica (i.e settle down, get married, be succesful in life, or at the least snort a shit load of coke every other day and fuck loads of bitches on a regular basis), you need to come here and do so to get some sort of satisfaction out of life.

Now, if this IS actually your case, then I feel so sorry for you that I actually apologize for my reply and I'd like to encourage you to keep trolling- I don't want to spoil the only pleasure you get out of life.

Please, go on.

Notice no one copies them now. Know why? Coz everyone with an ear and anyone who knows the first thing about music knows they suck and their shit only appeals to the lowest common denominator.

At least Testament is still playing REAL METAL. Something these pathetic clowns haven't even attempted since AJFA. And musically? Every member of Testament has more talent in their little toes than any of these fuckholes from 'Tallica ever could hope to have.

sadly @YouArePoorWhiteTrash is right. There is an awesome underground thrash movement in the West Coast with awesome up and coming thrash bands but it certainly is nowhere big enough to draw a band like Metallica here. Europe has both the best and worst of music, and unfortunately here in the States the more popular music tend to be stale and mediocre (at least to my taste)

I would agree with that statement from July 25, 1983 through their death on through August 12, 1991.

Just watched ""Best effects" montage"" and was pretty cool seeing the live effects. I've seen Metallica once and it was okay. People know all the songs that it feels you are at times listening to a karaoke session. True testament to their success.

Watching it though made me acknowledge the chance of another metallica are grim. A new metal band that could spend that much on good live production. I guess the closet is Lamb of Gob but even then. Meh. I still don't think they can pull that stuff off money wise / crowd pull.

Any BMer can think of a new metal band that came out in the last 5-10 years that can pull off that kinda production?

I am sure musically there is another metallica but the way people consume music these days would not sustain the interest long enough to allow exposure / build.

Perhaps the truth is the age has sadly ended which is a shame.

...production?

It's about the music, right? Everything else is glitter - a distraction to the music.

Or, maybe that music needs distractions nowadays.

The new Metallica is called Smash Potater.

Agreed. Though just a observation of the new bands coming out today (and not trying to be a dude that says only old bands are good, etc.). It will always be about the music. I love many of the "low budget" metal tours I attend and going even more apeshit to show my love and support for their art though it is just that grandeur / cash input I see being removed. My end is just the health of good (subjective) metal bands being sustainable. They are out there but when I see a band I love and the attendance lame I become aware of something/body taking a hit.

"The stage that we're doing — the kind of the 'best-of' stage — is pretty dangerous and pretty unpredictable"

I beg to differ. It my be unpredictable for HIM. But with this kind of completely over the top "staged" performance. It's anything but unpredictable for the audience. Every single move and every single moment is planned out around 10,000 pyro bursts and props and gimmicks and everything else. There will be absolutely no rocking the fuck out with this bullshit set up!

The only reason they could only do it in Mexico is because it cost way less to put on a production of that magnitude there. Stop trying to romanticize it, James.

Core this, Core that, fuck off with the labelling of shite music, tis gaycore.

Either music is good because you like it, or not because you don't. Why label it? that's gayer than the actualy bands listed on those 'labels'

Is it me, or does anyone else find it kinda strange that they would have two crew members burned by pyro and saying it's all part of the show, when 20 years ago they nearly lost James to that kind of shit?

I know it's probably water under the bridge but.... just sayin'.

That Metallica would never, ever, ever put on a show like this in the States. Period.

Just what do you plan on doing when you put out a new album and the fans in the US just ignore it like you ignore them repeatedly and you have to rely on Mexico for record sales? You'll fall on your face. Even the Big 3 shows...somehow you managed to do quite a few of them in Europe. Then you come to the States and play one on each coast and completely ignore the entire middle of the country?

I guess I can toss you in the same pile as I now have the Megadeth albums in now that Dave Mustaine has gone bat shit crazy. The one that never gets played anymore.

When you want fans, record sales and sell out tours just pack your bags and go to Mexico. And - STAY THERE.

So what they have done is all the stageshows that have toured over the years (including setting staff on fire) so that the 3d experience movie will be the same as when Garage Days came out and all the B sides and eps the hardcores bought as colletions were now sold to the general public...

Again, Metallica has no new ideas...SAD BUT TRUE
