Norway's MAYHEM Working On New Material - Aug. 16, 2012
TeePee of Total Rock Radio conducted an interview with Jørn Stubberud, best known as the bassist in the legendary Norwegian black metal band MAYHEM (where he performs under the stage name Necrobutcher), at this year's edition of the Bloodstock Open Air festival, which was held August 9-12 at Catton Park, Derbyshire in the United Kingdom. You can now watch the chat below.

Asked if MAYHEM has begun working on material for the follow-up to 2007's "Ordo Ad Chao", Stubberud said, "I think that we are not a traditional band in that matter, that we make an album every year and then do a tour with that. 'Cause we don't feel it's necessary to do that — we do an album when we feel like doing an album. It's true — all the guys have some other projects also; like Hellhammer [drums] has ARCTURUS, Attila [Csihar, vocals] has VOID OV VOICES and SUNN O))). It takes time to come up with some good stuff, and we don't wanna rush anything. But we are now, actually, working on some new stuff. It's very hard to say [when the next CD will be released], but we are currently working on some new material and we have a plan to do something that will kick us in the ass a little bit. It's too long a story to go into that [right now]. . . We're waiting for the right inspiration, but having a blast in the meantime, too — travelling around the world and playing."

MAYHEM was honored in the "Metal" category at the 36th annual Spellemann awards (the Norwegian equivalent to the Grammy Awards) for "Ordo Ad Chao".

"Ordo Ad Chao" entered the Norwegian album chart at position No. 12, the band's highest position ever.

Sadly they live on in the hype provided by the media as their output is poor on every level...but if they can do so on that alone then good on them, bring back the tunes not the drones...now cue the trolls

Well, good morning to you too troll. Feel better after that pitiful rant on these black metal legends?

Poor output???? Right......even if one can argue that Chimera was possibly a par album, if still a return to form of sorts, there are three other mind blowing studio albums to consider.

De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Grand Declaration of War
Ordo Ad Chao

All three awesome, unique, and inspiring.

Can't fucking wait for a new album, but as has been pointed out, without Blasphemer writing the riffs....yikes.

as expected silly wee troll. If you read it, it is a statement not a rant. And if you were to learn the ability to read and then research your BM history there are few bands that site Mayhem as inspiration. I grant you that you might find some of their albums "mindblowing" however (and that is your right) to sit there listening to a grudge soundalike giving it wellie that sounds as I have just described then good for you....they have (and if you research their interviews from the early 90's) no musical ability and I cannot accept atmosphere over musical cakk.
They hold a place in metal I don't deny that but to hold them in such high regard demonstrates a lack of appreciation and understanding of our great metal universe (and black metal in particular) and its origins.
Oh and fyi, "awesome, unique and inspiring" are obviously the comments of an individual yet my comments were based on numerous reviews and sales....look it up and FYI read my post again because ultimately I do not knock them but now I must knock your troll like brain because you DID NOT READ WHAT I SAID YOU TWAT.

about time, jesus guys it seems like it's been forever, and i really didn't like Ordo Ad chao. an album like that that has less structure and more 'sound scape' should have been produced better. I know they got what they wanted with the necro sound and all, but that would have worked much better for the chimera album instead. i would like to see this band put out anything as good as De Misterius, Wolflair's Abyss, or grand declaration of war.

I'm hoping this will be good. Though I did prefer Maniac's vocals, Atilla brings a different sound to the group as well. Looking forward to this.

Necrobutcher has it right on the religious freaks. It's a shame he cannot nail it that well with the music of his band. They haven't released anything worth in a decade, at least.

Looking forward to this, I thought Ordo Ad Chao was absolutely amazing, it had that same black metal atmosphere whilst sounding totally fresh, bizarre and frankly, totally fucking terrifying. This band still rules and I'm really eager what happens next!

Love this band - Ordo Ad Chao is a masterpiece. The first time I heard it I was lost then by the 3rd time I was blown away! Atilla is the best vocalist they've had - plus he has a unique voice, godless Maniac but he was terrible (although he did get better on Chimera).
I can't wait for the new album- i'll buy it first day

Oh yeah & why the hate on Chimera? That's the album that turned me in to them - bought every album after that- their weakest was GDOW (& it wasn't terrible)

You think Grand Declaration of War is their weakest, you don't understand Mayhem yet.

Ordo Ad Chao was an excellent record. Attila's presence always improves a record. Keep the production good and lo-fi and keep up the good work.

They've been saying the same shit since Ordo was released! I have been waiting patiently and am now starting to lose faith that they'll put out another release before one of them dies of old age. I'd love to see Blasphemer back, but I also think there was a Maybe before him, then there could certainly be one after him. I just wish that Necrobutcher would take part in the song writing process a bit more, as he did in the PFA/Deathcrush days! Either way, I believe that if they actually release something, it will be great; I'm just getting tired of hearing all the same old shit, stringing all the fans along for the past 5 years like they have. Just do it!

Attila rules, Mayhem is legit again, the last tour was great and you could tell they were having fun and enjoying the music and the tour. Attila is a breath of fresh air, I could not stand that Maniac stuff.

We need a new Mayhem recording. I prefer the Maniac era better, but got a chance to seek the Atilla version last year and it was incredble.

They have produced some of the darkest and most erie music ever created. Maniac and Atilla are both great in different ways. Maniac has a piercing edge and Atilla has a haunting edge.

Blasphemer channelled the darkest essence of black metal. A friend once said to me that Wolf's Lair Abyss was the nastiest music he'd ever heard... in a good way. That's right!

I like the guy above who says Snorre Ruch should be involved. He also is an antenna for blackness and that's what Mayhem needs.
