Video: TESTAMENT Guitarist Recording Harmonies For Cover Version Of IRON MAIDEN Classic - Aug. 14, 2012
Video footage of TESTAMENT guitarist Alex Skolnick tracking harmonies at Spin Studios in Long Island City, New York for the band's cover version of the IRON MAIDEN classic "Powerslave" can be seen below. The song is included on the CD/DVD and vinyl versions of TESTAMENT's new album, "Dark Roots Of Earth", which sold more than 20,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No, 12 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD arrived in stores on July 31 via Nuclear Blast Records.

TESTAMENT's previous studio album, "The Formation of Damnation", opened with 11,400 units back in May 2008 to debut at position No. 59.

"Dark Roots Of Earth" was produced, mixed and mastered by acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap (ARCH ENEMY, NEVERMORE, ACCEPT, EXODUS). Special bonus tracks were recorded, mixed and mastered by Juan Urteaga (MACHINE HEAD, EXODUS, TED NUGENT, NIGHT RANGER) at his Trident Studios. The cover artwork for the effort (see below) was painted by Eliran Kantor, who has previously worked with ATHEIST, SIGH, ANACRUSIS and GWAR, among others.

Skolnick is vastly underrated. Easily blows away all his peers in the original genre.

Wow, that sounds awesome.

Probably my favorite solo that Adrian ever played in Maiden, and Alex made it sound brilliant.

He's recording a solo, not harmonies.

Nailed what?

That is some impressive shredding yes, and if it was Skolnicks own track, I would even call it very tasty, but this has as much to do with the original Powerslave solo as AC/DC has to do with Yngwie.
I gotta admin i prefer covers note by note.

I definitely don't prefer note by note covers. Personally, I don't see much point in covering a song if it pretty much sounds exactly like the original. If you want a cover that sounds identical to the original, then why not just listen to the original instead?

To me, a great cover is keeping the essence of what made the original so great, whilst also stamping your own unique mark on the track. If it sounds too similar, or too different, it won't work. The key is finding that balance between making the song sound like your own, without changing it so much that it almost resembles a different song. Testament got the balance just right on the Powerslave cover. It sounds awesome!

You can tell he loves what he does for sure. Also, I love how that Lexicon 480L gleams in the light. 8)

Long live Testament!

Great player, great tone. Sound like this cover is gonna be killer. Loved that he didn't need to drown the tone in a ton of delay or reverb.

Fuck Chuck Billy though. He stinks and air guitars too much. His ego mic is lame too.

The cover is absolutely brilliant, and I'd never thought I'd say something like this, but he absolutely kills Adrian and Dave's solos in the original, incredible.

It is always a pleasure to watch musicians of this caliber at work. It's also refreshing to see that even they have to work at something to make is right. You and I only hear the finished product so it's easy for us to assume that they pulled solos like this out their ass with little to no effort when in fact it's a quite painstaking process.

Holy shit Alex! I make those same faces while taking a shit!
And thrashing!
Great work and great cover of a Maiden classic.
How can you have a top ten guitar player list and You not be in it?
Keep up the good work and we appreciate you paying homage to our other hero's.

E~
