ERIC PETERSON: 'If TESTAMENT Sees Darker Days, I Don't Know If This Lineup Would Stick' - Aug. 13, 2012
Classic rock program "Radio Fireball" in Jönköping, Sweden recently conducted an interview with TESTAMENT guitarist, founder and main songwriter Eric Peterson.

Asked about what he sees for the future of TESTAMENT's current lineup, beyond the band's new album, "Dark Roots Of Earth", and tour, Eric said, "There's definitely some politics in the band now. I think if the record does good — which I think it will — it'll see TESTAMENT be doing another record. There's some people in the band that are, you know, I think aren't a hundred percent there unless, you know, it keeps going good. That's pretty extreme, but, like for me, I'm down for whatever. I started the band, I'm totally into it. This is what I do. I think, you know, if TESTAMENT sees darker days, I don't know if this lineup would stick."

"Radio Fireball"'s entire interview with Peterson will air today (Monday, August 13) at 6 p.m. CET and can only be heard in the Jönköping area.

"Dark Roots Of Earth" sold more than 20,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No, 12 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD arrived in stores on July 31 via Nuclear Blast Records.

TESTAMENT's previous studio album, "The Formation of Damnation", opened with 11,400 units back in May 2008 to debut at position No. 59.

"Dark Roots Of Earth" was produced, mixed and mastered by acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap (ARCH ENEMY, NEVERMORE, ACCEPT, EXODUS). Special bonus tracks were recorded, mixed and mastered by Juan Urteaga (MACHINE HEAD, EXODUS, TED NUGENT, NIGHT RANGER) at his Trident Studios. The cover artwork for the effort (see below) was painted by Eliran Kantor, who has previously worked with ATHEIST, SIGH, ANACRUSIS and GWAR, among others.

...it's about the fact that there's NO money.

Everyone seems to assume it's Alex that Eric is alluding to. That maybe right...dunno. But womever it is...if he's got a wife and kids, and can make more money doing something else, then I can't blame him.

Seriously - to invest so much time in creating something that you know everyone is just going to take for free is ridiculous. The ONLY way to make money is to be away from family and friends for months at a time. As much as I love metal, I don't think that would be for me.

Bottom line - the current state of the music industry is forcing everyone to make a lot of tough decisions. So don't be too quick to judge.

Just sayin'...

epac... all good & true points.
when I say 'goddamn money' that's essentially what I mean... the lack of it or there not being enough to go around, hence causing tension in the group. Whatever the case, more often than not, it boils down to the goddamn money whether you're talking an international metal act or a family of 4 scraping by and the parents fighting like mad... it usually all boils down to one thing... goddamn money.
The love of the craft only goes so far when you've got mouths to feed and a roof to keep.

...and to KarlMarxAbortion... I pay my bills with my devistating good looks, holmes. ...and a little bit of that goddamn money too.

Its not a good thing right now for Musicians out here!

Buy The Music,Buy the Shirts,Buy the Tickets and go to the shows when in town.
If all would support Metal we would see another flood like the 80s and be on top again! Those days gave us Metalheads good times to be had!! The Best!!

I know what i will be talking about with Eric when he gets to my home state.

Buy Buy and BUY Metal !!! Damn! People !

You are correct. I am seeing Testament again with Anthrax next month. Saw them headline last February and Last November with Anthrax. I support them through and through. We need more like you and I.

I have been to over 20 concerts already this year. I continue and will always support these bands.

I don't care that Eric was being honest with his statement; it was still a dumb thing to say publicly, especially on the heels of a new album that actually charted decently upon debut.

It's obvious Alex isn't into this 100%. He'd rather be playing jazz full time.

I think we know who he's talking about. But I'm not understanding why this comes up during Testaments moment of glory.

Personally, I think Chuck and Eric put together some of their best albums when it was only Chuck and Eric. (Low, Demonic, The Gathering) It seems these guys feed off hard times better than great times.

"metalli-syndrome", I guess you can call it.

Just enjoy the success you currently have, and what happens..happens. Fuck.

Why's everyone ripping on Skolnick? Out of all of them, I would think he is the most well-off. I bet he made decent cash touring w/ TSO. I'm sure he made way more than any of the guys in Testament ever did. So if he's with Testament, I would think it's because he wants to be there not for a paycheck.

Could be wrong though

I don't think it's about the money either. Nobody joins Testament to get rich. To make a living, maybe. Skolnick has done a lot of other stuff and it's for that reason that he can afford to just get up and walk out whenever he wants and for whatever reason he comes up with.

I think it'd be just as weird if Marty Friedman rejoined Megadeth. Dave Mustaine throws one shit fit and Marty can pack up and go back to Japan and go co-write another #1 hit or something, no skin off his nose.

almost any thrash metal release outside "The Big Four" i can think of. it's doing great.

sucks to hear about Skolnick (if that's who it is) but the guy's heart is in jazz.

can't blame a musician for having a passion that doesn't align 100% with his bandmates; he doesn't want to just play metal full time.

that said, they can thrive without him. Testament is a song-based band, not a showcase for Alex's solos. plenty of guys out there who can solo well over this stuff.

riffs > solos, in Testament and all metal

I am not the least bit surprised by those comments. These people are all adults now and do actually have families to support. I get it. Kudos for Peterson to come right out and say it though. He was a little PC about it, but still... to just come out with the truth, it's a good thing.

Skolnick is an incredibly talented guitarist and always has been. However he has always said over the years, he enjoys metal, but it doesn't define him and he will always be interested in playing other forms of music. He likes the variety. Good for him. Would I be sad to see him go? Yes and no. Yes because he is so talented and has such killer leads. No - because like so many others I think some of Testament's best work was done without him in the band.

There used to be bit of beef between Peterson & Skolnick back in the day over not just the musical direction of the band but things like the "harmonies" and what was "musically correct". Skolnick is very educated and wants everything perfect, in key, etc.... Peterson, just wants shit cool. It created a bit of tension back in the day. Peterson certainly has come a long way musically and I think Skolnick sees that and respects it, but you gotta wonder if there are still some underlying tension between the 2 of them.

Just my 2 cents.

Eric and Chuck both has full time jobs (at the same place if I'm not mistaken) - Skolnick hasn't, he's devoted to music, and has to pay the bills like everyone else.

However, he could be referring to Hoglan as well. If fact, I would bet on it. Hoglan did leave the band (or rather, declined the invitation to join) right after Demonic came out, and that was at a time when Testament was perceived to be a band whose career was coming to an end. We all know Hoglan is really just a session player in any band these days (if you could consider any band to be his "full time gig", it would be Dethklok).

So give Skolnick the benefit of the doubt. I don't think he would have come back to begin with, if his heart wasn't in it.

Although I'd like to see this line-up stick around permanently, I wouldn't stop listening to them if they had to make another switch.

They had nothing but all-star talent formerly of other thrash bands play with them in the 90's and those albums were solid (Low, Demoninc, The Gathering ... even First Strike).

I think both Skolnick and Christian are concerned by that statement. Anyway, we can consider ourselves lucky to have the original line-up (minus Louie) back together and playing such a cool heavy melodic trash. This is what Testament is at the end : melodic. For some people "the Gathering" is the best album, for others (like me) it isn't and stuff like Disciples of the Watch, Trial by Fire will remain their pinnacle. Skolnicks solos are part of the Testament sound.

Skolnick sure as hell didn't come back for the money even for one album. Billy and Christian aren't going anywhere, so it's gotta be Hoglan.

BUT, why do we jump to conclusions? There's no inflection in the written word - during the actual interview did he sound pissed? Concerned? Accusatory?

Regardless, Hoglan was approached by Testament because he was the guy for the job. They got him to record the new album and then to tour. Mission accomplished, I'd say.

I don't see him mentioning any names and it sounds to me like he is implying 'multiple' band members. It isn't wise to come out saying this publicly but Erik is probably just pissed at the band's history with money issues.

Testament has always been upset at the fact that they never achieved Metallica status and sales. I believe personaly that they made more awesome music than Metallica and should have been placed as a BIG 4 member instead of Anthrax. Testament has always had very poor marketing skills so I blame their label/managers/producers for their money issues in their earlier years.

You reach a point in your life/ career were you HAVE to put a cash/time value on your skills. When your young and carefree you just want to party, play for free, or whatever. As you age the REALITIES of life are such that the older you get the more responsibilities you have and bills need to get paid and retirement planning needs to be a PRIORITY. Wake up musicians!! I get the fact that music is your life and ya ya and the roar of the crowd is priceless ya ya but picture yourself in your 50 60 70s with no retirement plan no savings no health care no investments nothing! Lets face it there is NOTHING financially enticing about being a metal musician except maybe if your Metallica or some serious high ranking marquee level band and have some smarts about how to invest your money wisely. A lot of people in this scene want something for nothing and people needs to stand up to that bullshit and say "fuck you"! Any other industry or genre of music you could be making a decent living but why not in metal? People need to raise the bar on themselves and not be afraid to split if there not getting what they deserve!

if this is true. After all the band has been through seemed like they solidified the line up, albeit Hoglan perhaps. I can't imagine this being Alex as he chose Testament and his Trio over TSO as the later consumes so much time preparing for the season. I'm sure he knew going in that Testament wouldn't bring in the big numbers like TSO. Who knows though, I hope it's not Alex leaving again. Love the new album. And again, I say what's wrong with Chuck telling the tale of his people?

Testament is way better/heavier when Eric doesn't have to compromise his writing/ideas with sckolnik. Hate to say it but I like the non sckolnik records better & I idolized sckolnik in the early days. Best guitarist in early thrash but metal has evolved beyond thrash & Peterson knows how to combine new & old.

Long live testament in all forms!!!!
