PAUL STANLEY Rules Out Reunion Of Original KISS Lineup: 'You Only Get So Many Chances' - Aug. 12, 2012
KISS guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley told The San Diego Union-Tribune that the band can continue in the future (and theoretically forever) without him and fellow KISS co-founder Gene Simmons.

"The band is bigger than its members," said Stanley. "And it only takes, in this case, four like-minded people with a similar outlook and talent to further the cause and continue KISS. It makes perfect sense to me. It may not make sense to other bands, but we're not other bands. We don't live by those rules. We never have."

Asked if he is concerned that he and Simmons, both 62, are growing too old to rock 'n' roll all night, Stanley said, "I'm damn good at what I do. But do I think I'm the only person capable of doing what I do? Absolutely not. I'm not talking about a clone (of me), but somebody with the same passion, drive and love for the music I love. So, can I envision a time when I won't be here anymore? Absolutely. It's not tomorrow, or next week. But when it happens, I would be celebratory. Because it would prove that I was right and that KISS is exactly what I believe it is: an ideal, a way of performing, a point of view. It's an attitude, and the respect and love (we have for) our audience."

Despite the fact that KISS's 2000 tour was billed as the band's "farewell" trek, the group carried on, with drummer Eric Singer and guitarist Tommy Thayer filling the roles of Peter Criss and Ace Frehley, respectively.

Asked if another reunion of the four original members of KISS be possible, Stanley told The San Diego Union-Tribune, "Never! You only get so many opportunities and so many chances. And while I don't wish [Frehley and Criss] any ill will at this point, you know, most people are fortunate to win the lottery once. When you win it twice, and throw it away, the opportunities are gone. Plus, everything that those guys did, unfortunately, jeopardized what I do. Those who don't learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them. … The intent and spirit of what this band was founded on is more intact and alive today than ever. And it's not because of the individual founding members or any of that nonsense, but because of people who have the passion, the love and commitment to live up to what KISS is."

Regarding why he and Simmons never fell prey to drugs and alcohol, Stanley said, "For me, the idea of self-preservation has always been key. We don't even have to go to Jim Morrison or Hendrix. We can go back to Billie Holiday. Time and time again, the drugs will either kill you outright, or kill your spirit, your creativity, your joy in life. It becomes a life sentence, without bars. I never wanted to sign up for that. There's nothing romantic about that. And the only people who see that as romantic are often the critics, who sit on the sidelines and like to romanticize while their heroes deteriorate, and somehow, that validates the art of the addict. I never bought into that."

Well, not really. Velvet Underground was never a sober band and they were billions of times better than KISS. Same with Hendrix, The Doors, The Band, Cream, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc. All far from sober, all better than KISS.

I think it's important that he is putting some complex emotions and feelings into a seminal thought. You know he's very lucky to have that wisdom and the show will not go on, if you're unfortunately, an addict. KIDS, beware!!!!

I remember going to see them live in 2000 on the Farewell tour. Great show with the original 4. Bought a t-shirt that I still wear on occasion. I took the farewell seriously though, even if they didn't. Haven't seen 'em since, never even bothered to listen to the last record, nor will I give this one a chance.

Now that Ace is clean, Paul doesn't want to be overshadowed. As for Peter, well I recently saw this video... maybe he's better off toiling away in obscurity.

They know they can have smaller shows and make more money with the two scabs than if they had bigger shows and had to pay Ace and Peter. That is all it comes down to. It's all money. If so many KISS fans weren't so stupid and stopped going to these half ass shows Ace and Peter would be back.

I've also been a fan since 5 years old I'm 42 now and i agree the other two members should have their own identity. The cloning idea was lame. Enough said. What really shits me is the same old set lists you guys have been repeating over and over. I've seen you guys perform more times than i can count and the highlight of every show were the older songs that i hadn't seen played before but sadly that seems to be a thing of the past. I still make the effort to spend my hard earned cash to travel from Australia to the USA when we don't make your touring cycle and I'll see you guys again in NY in a few weeks but if you lazy bastards aren't willing to put in the effort anymore then i won't either. I shouldn't have to go to special events like the KISS cruise to see at least one classic song played when the back catalogue is as vast as it is. WAKE UP TO YOUR REAL FANS!

Yes, very well said. I wouldn't have a problem AT ALL if Singer and Thayer were new characters. It was kinda strange when Singer popped in as "Catman" and Ace was still there. Seemed temporary...but to keep it going AND make new albums with them. I've also grown tired of paying to see them live with the same set list. Would be hard to imagine them not playing Detoit Rock City of Dr Love... but why not try it. Each tour half tunes they've played live, the other half old tunes never heard live. I wonder if they could do it over again if they would have retired the Spaceman and Catman characters... that would really solve all of the true fans concerns (all concerns other than the $4000 book, crappy Monster album cover, etc)

With what Paul was saying. The sum is greater than the parts. Creating new characters would have turned this band into a farce (even moreso). Somehow i dont believe you old school fans would accept a giraffe boy or mouse man with open arms. I think paying homage to the original characters of the space ace and cat man with respectable and sober musicians is the smarter way to go. Face it guys, it will never be the same Kiss we grew up with.

I disagree with that. I think they don't want the new fans to even realize they made any changes in the band, its just "spaceman" and "Catman". Characters. It is what it is, but its still not cool. No, they don't need to create a character Sober Man, but its really just a Vegas style show at this time. To the point Paul's considering plugging in a new Demon & StarChild. Bands aren't characters to me. as mentioned, it takes away from Paul's contributions. No, i don't understand Paul's point at all. It is at that point a show. No creativity.

the spirit of KISS is not intact. it's a betrayel to the real KISS. be honest and say you just want to keep putting the costumes on and being the starchild since it makes a lot of money. you aren't fooling half of us. so i guess you still can make a good living so that makes it the kiss spirit to you, mr. eisen? sad. you couldn't give me free tickets to see KISS with imposters. and by imposters, i mean all 4 who are in the band now. we miss you, ace & peter.

Face it people, even though Kiss had a reunion in 1996, they still hated each other. They only did it for the money. And when you're in a band, only driven by money, it sucks all the creative out of you.

Kiss could never have done Sonic Boom, or any other album, together with Ace and Peter. It's a shame, but it's true. That's why Ace and Peter almost didn't play anything on Psycho Circus, and that why it only lasted for 5-6 years.

KISS are a better band now than if ace or peter were still members. And as a fan Im glad that the farewell tour wasn't KISS s last. AC/DC, Ozzy , Black Sabbath all did farewell/last chance to see them live tours. No one ever hears nearly the grief thrown at them. I saw KISS two weeks ago and they were killer ...

Stanlet, of course, is right about the drugs and what they lead to but he is ABSOLUTELY dead wrong if he believes that KISS could go on without any original members. It's bad enough that 2 original memebrs are barred from any reunion but a KISS without the two of them? I don't believe it.

Blah, blah. Yeah, I've heard the theory. Too bad it bears no resemblance to reality. As a band they're no better or worse. I've never much had any opinion positive or negative about Thayer.

I'm a relative newcomer to Blabbermouth and the news stories concerning Kiss are one of the constants. This issue is one of the polarizing stories in rock. It never fails to create a response. Kiss is near the end. Enjoy what we have. They"ll come together at the RHOF ceremonies without Tommy and Eric(probably Bruce too). Everyone will hug and all will be forgotton.
