Vocalist PETER DOLVING: Why I Left THE HAUNTED - Aug. 12, 2012
Former THE HAUNTED frontman Peter Dolving has posted a lengthy statement on his Facebook page in which he attempts to explain his reasons for leaving the band in February of this year. He writes in part, "I left THE HAUNTED back early this spring because I had fucking had it with dysfunctional bullshit.

"The day the Björlers [guitarist Anders Björler and bassist Jonas Björler] decided to tell tell us about the AT THE GATES 'farewell tour' (the farewell tour now on its third year), we were releasing and promoting 'Versus'.

"They told us that they would only do 14 shows. They are still touring....

"They have really cashed in to the fullest. Good for them. It's good to have money in a capitalist world.

"[Guitarist Patrik] Jensen is the one who saw clearly what was up.

"The moment they told us, his response was, 'You know this is going to kill THE HAUNTED.' The twins were both extremely defensive about it, and now we know why. They were lying out their ass.

"Jensen ain't no dumb-ass. He made another WITCHERY record, toured like a sonofabitch with his project and got a degree in the meantime.

"Good for him.

"It's good to have a degree in a capitalist world.

"I caught on slower, but I figured it was fucking ridiculously slow that making 'Unseen' took 2 years. I must have written 40 fucking songs for that record. Every time I presented something, it wasn't 'played well enough to really hear what's going on' or 'it's not THE HAUNTED.' Jonas presented some amazing ideas. But there was no heart.

"I am not a very cheerfulful person. I prefer working to hanging out. Because I love my work more than I love people. I don't lie or pretend it's any other way. But anyone who knows me will testify that I am not a lying, unloyal, uncaring, indifferent fucking prick whose emotional incapacities render me void of treating people respectfully.

"Rock and roll for me is about love, hate, life and how we live it. It's vivid, aware, right here. Indifference and shutting each other off is the diametric opposite. Watching your back because you care more about your pension plan than your fellow travellers, avoiding confrontations because one is lazy and a coward, etc., is just not fucking cutting it.

"They broke my fucking heart."

Read Dolving's entire statement at this location.

Previously a vocalist for MARY BEATS JANE, Dolving joined THE HAUNTED in 1997 and sang in their debut self-titled album. In 1998, he left the group to concentrate on a band called ZEN-MONKEY but returned in 2003 following the departure of Marco Aro (the vocalist which took over Dolving's spot after Peter's 1998 exit). He has since appeared on the studio albums "Revolver" (2004), "The Dead Eye" (2006), "Versus" (2008) and "Unseen" (2011).

THE HAUNTED's seventh studio CD, "Unseen", sold around 1,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The effort landed at position No. 33 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

"Unseen" was released on March 29, 2011 via Century Media Records. The CD was once again recorded with longtime producer Tue Madsen (MOONSPELL, DARK TRANQUILLITY, GOREFEST, SICK OF IT ALL) at his Antfarm Studio in Århus, Denmark.

You mean you didn't leave the band because you're presence consistently steered them away from the glorious heavy metal they were once known and praised for?

Maybe Anders and Jonas prefer playing with At The Gates because they actually want to rock, not play whatever bad pop music your silly ass keeps insisting on.

"The Haunted Made Me Do It" was the band's best album. I'll give you one guess why...

P.S. You wrote 40 songs for "Unseen"? Jesus Christ! I can't even begin to imagine how bad the ones that DIDN'T make the record must be...

yes the music of the haunted was without HEART & soul indeed..i told u before (in the haunted FORUM) UNSEEN record even on after the dead eye it was clear but nobody accept me..
& now i told u mr dolving i am that same shapaloutka that screamed about destruction of the haunted..now i beleive in myself & my taste of music..i was your loyal fan ..
the bottom line is why u tell us about having no soul in writing porssec & bjorler playing..u were most important part of the band with no soul no heart ..

Also @theblindingape, why couldn't the Bjoerlers respond? Do they not have phones? Do they not have email? Are they not on Facebook or MySpace? Do they not have a manager? Blabbermouth had every opportunity to contact them for comment, but chose not to. Lazy, lousy reporting is what this is, plain and simple.

I'm sure he has some legit reasons to leave. Good for him. Go take care of your life.

That being said, I will not miss this prick. I hated the fact that The Most Annoying Jackoff in Music was in one of my favorite bands. He was only one one good disc, and that was the 1st eponymous one. He had almost nothing to do with it besides shouting. The next two were almost as good because he wasn't in the way. The rest fucking suck. Hopefully we'll get a good one next time.

I stopped reading anything he said years ago, but at least now I won't have to skip over his crap while reading anything tagged with the almighty THE HAUNTED.

I forgot to add...

To the dude above slamming Peter because he's bi-polar, thank goodness you obviously haven't been affected with such a potentially nasty condition. That you haven't any experience whatsoever with someone who is bi-polar only bolsters your ignorance about it, yet somehow you aren't self-aware enough to realize this and slam your gums together anyway. Brain chemistry regarding such conditions is about as controllable *naturally* as gravity when zipping down the outside of a skyscraper after jumping.

Like Peter chose to be bi-polar. Do you honestly think someone would choose that? Really?

GAWD I wish ignorance was painful!

I also wish At The Gates would stop cheapening their "farewell" tour and either make it a full blown reunion with a new album or call it a day already!

He's a very unstable and irrational person. At The Gates was the Björler brothers band. The Haunted is their band. Without them these bands would never have succeeded in the first place. It's their company, their decisions. Jensen seems a bit smarter than Dolving, you always need to see to your own future. Being in a band that's not your own is always less secure than a normal employment. The Björler brothers probably didn't think that the demand for At The Gates would be that great and probably hoped that The Haunted would keep on selling records. Now everyone wants to see At The Gates and of course they need to make the right decision financial wise as any other businessmen would have to. Dolving is a bitter far left muppet who blames all his mistakes and failures on the evil capitalist world....

Is One Kill Wonder. Any person who likes this band believes so. This guy, this fucking guy with his diva artsy attitude is the real reason why The Haunted sucks now. Imagine this band with Aro, they easily could have reached the throne of thrash metal, but instead, they bring Dolving again, just to please his avant garde crap songs that no ones cares but him. The Haunted born as a thrash metal outfit, and that's all. The Dolving guy wanted to turn them into The Beatles or something. They just need to play metal. That's all about.

The Haunted sucked from day one. Watered down "thrash" crammed into pop song format, with the trademark Swedish melodic "death" elements and production that were so trendy a decade ago. Marketed to the fucking tits by the big independent european labels that are notorious for being 200% in bed with "magazines" like Metallian. FUCK. THIS. SHIT. I hope that entire clique of Nuclear Blast and Century Media and Metallian and company go down the shitter and get flushed for good!

Neil Young,

You used "bi-polar" in a derogatory fashion. If you were streaming a list of adjectives while slamming Kobe Bryant and "black" was one of them, it would come off like you meant for it to be harmful since it was mixed in with other words that obviously were intended to slam him.

On the other hand, if you were praising Kobe and "black" was included, it would come off like a compliment because it was lumped in with other words of praise.

There's really no other way I can think of to say that.

That's how your statement read, like it or not.

Peter brought the best out of the brothers and the brothers brought the best out in him. The Haunted's best stuff was with him, whoever says Aro is better is just plain wrong. That guy was very amature compared to Dolving. Also the at the gates reunion shit sucks, Lindberg ain't a pimple on Dolving's ass. ATG are / were pretty good but Lindberg's vocals always bored the shit out of me, he fucked up that crown album too. They only became "popular" in metal community way after the supposed influential album came out, most metal heads were too busy sucking on pantera's collective dong to notice those guys.

I can't stand him after commenting on one of his posts on Facebook about if you're a 'slave to the capitalist machine' or whatever bs he would say, you cannot find happiness. I said that was crap and that you can be content while being a cog in the corporate world, and he then deleted my post. At that point, I lost all respect for one of my idols for the past ten years, and one of the best frontmen I have seen (barring the last tour I've seen where the energy and enthusiasm for the music just wasn't there).

How about in every interview he gives where he slams capitalism? Is that good enough for you? Reference the above and his sarcastic mention of "in a capitalist society".

If he really hated it that much he would find a way to live outside that system.

Again, not preaching for capitalism - it has a lot of flaws - but I live my life so that when I criticize something I don't sound like a hypocrite. He should, too.

It didn't help that the personalites in this band clashed and differences couldn't be dealt with.

'live outside of capitalism' doesn't wash with me. It's pretty much impossible to live outside of capitalism. It dictates and controls almost everything. Even people that live in communes and are relatively self succient still rely on the system to some degree. if you live in the first world especially there is really no way out, unless you want to be poor, starving and/or homeless.

and besides, capitalism doesn't need 'respect'. what an absurd idea. There are lots of rich people out there that abuse the system and could give two fucks about it or the society's they live in for that matter. There are also rich people that have a problem with aspects of it even though they have benefitted on the whole.

It's not all or nothing.

I have toured with Marco Aaro, and he is s good singer and a cool dude to hang arround. This was back in the nineties. Marcos big "idol" was Peter Dolving, based on Peters work in Mary Beats Jane and The Haunted- especially Peters outspoken and personal lyrics.

As for the Twins, I have heard many a dude call them the "autists". I don't think they suffer from the clinical term autism, it's just a description of their personalities.

As for At The Gates, I think the bands current status has a lot to do with the success of In Flames, who did not quit like At The Gates, but decided to do a full blown attempt to be a pop band. People in the states wanted to track back the roots to In Flames and found At The Gates. Could have just as easily have been Entombed or Dismember or any other of the great swedish death metal bands of the early nineties. But the lights focused on At The Gates. I have heard Anders from In Flames say that people always asked about the roots to In Flames, and he would always answer At The Gates.

Big Fucking Deal...to me the roots are rather Candlemass...or Avskum. Mix that and you will have something remotely close to death metal. What the fuck does it matter?

In the 2000:s it was all about the Buck. People would literary step over dead bodies to make it. I know this because I have seen it. Just as Peter has seen it. It went from music to ALL business. And in the middle of all that you had The Haunted and At The Gates. Not because they were the ones who took it to the 100% business level, but because they were centered in a scene that went fucked by the Dollar.

I think you are a fucking moron to bitch about wich exact album from The Haunted or At The Gates is the best one, yada yada...the point here is that none of it would have ever happened if people would have been chasing money. It was a passionate thing, and it went totally down the drain. And HELL NO it's no Peter Dolvings fault. Can't you see how retarded an idea like that is?

As for Peter, I met him way back in the nineties, around the Mary Beats Jane period. Back then he was a very secluded person, even among people he knew. And I can relate to both the Peter of the nineties and the Peter of today.

In the early nineties it was all about the creative output, the art. A band like At The Gates was considered by many to be sell outs long before Slaughter Of The Soul. At a time when they probably did not even get food backstage. But in a way it was a more healthy scene than todays. The fans were critical and you would have to be at your best to cut it.

To see that scene be transformed into a rectified commercialized turd was a chock to many of us, and it is a bit painful to think about even today. But what I can say is that Peter Dolving is NOT part of the problem here, he is part of the possible solution. Believe it or not...

As the metal magazines and the commercial outlets got in control of what is hot and what is not, the young metal fans had a hard time figuring out what was really the facts in metal. So in order to
make things just a little bit better people have to step up and speak the truth. It will be choking to a lot of the fans, but it is what is needed. Because to us who believe in rock and roll it is not about money or good business decisions (to hear fans defending that sort of thinking wants me to puke straight out). It is a matter of life and death. It is not about entertainment either- that is what the record labels and magazines wants you to believe. No, there is a genuine belief in rock and roll as a supreme medium to communicate certain things. And the medium is getting fucked over and over.

We can't have businessmen forming metal bands for fuck sake!

Just think about it....

keep this to himself like he said? Guess the attention hunger in him hasn't died. Marco should come back. The attempt at gaining a more In Flames type popularity has failed. Before Peter, they were simply The Haunted and then became The Haunted featuring Peter. Good riddance.

These guys have been in this thing for a long time, but I haven't thought them relevant for quite some time. The best stuff out there is on a completely different level. At the Gates and The Haunted is just fanboy stuff now. Unseen is a pretty fresh sound and I actually like it, but it doesn't sound like The Haunted to me. Maybe Peter should go his own way instead of trying to force his viewpoints onto The Haunted. If he is really the main songwriting force like he says than he should just start a new band and do Unseen type material. They obviously are not interested and just because they avoid confrontation doesn't change the obvious. If they were into it they would be into it period. Everyone has a different way of communicating. They are communicating with actions. They are saying we would rather play old At the Gates than tour on Unseen.

...after that, not so much. "Unseen", in particular was atrocious.

I "get" what Peter's saying...but I think he's a bit misguided. He seems to slam the idea that people are playing in a band for "their pensions" and not for the sheer art of it.

Unfortunately, that's not realistic. It would be wonderful to be 21 years old forever, saying "F the music industry, my parents, the world" and not care about the future.

But everyone grows older. They get married, have kids, etc. 99% of everyone at 35 or 40 are not the same people they were at 21 (I guess Peter is in the 1%.)

I'm not going to speak for anyone in the band, but in this day-and-age, when even major names are struggling to make a profit, I would never begrudge anyone for going where the money is. What are they supposed to do, starve?

In that sense, Peter made the best decision for everyone by leaving. But he shouldn't expect everyone to blindly become a "starving artist" for some nobler purpose.

... is my favorite the haunted albums by far. They really tried to be varied and succeded on those. The others are just boring after a few spins.

But I get that I'm the only one here that likes those albums the best...

Those idiots saying Aro is better than Dolving, get out. Dolving's an awesome guy, fantastic singer and I wish him all the best.
