METALLICA Frontman Gets Pied For 49th Birthday; Video, Photos Available - Aug. 11, 2012
Video footage and photos of METALLICA frontman James Hetfield getting covered in silly string and cream pies for his 49th birthday at the conclusion of the band's August 2 concert in Mexico City can be seen below. This was the fourth show of the band's eight-date run at Palacio de los Deportes (Sports Palace) .

METALLICA's setlist for the August 2 concert:

01. Creeping Death
02. For Whom The Bell Tolls
03. Fuel
04. Ride The Lightning
05. One
06. Cyanide
07. The Memory Remains
08. The Four Horsemen
09. Sad But True
10. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
11. ...And Justice For All
12. Fade To Black
13. Master Of Puppets
14. Battery
15. Nothing Else Matters
16. Enter Sandman

Encore:

17. Helpless
18. Seek & Destroy

Two members of METALLICA's road crew caught fire during each of the first four Mexico concerts, as the two stagehands were seen struggling with a malfunctioning pyro launcher during "Enter Sandman" when both were suddenly engulfed in flame. As James Hetfield called for the band to stop playing, other crew members doused the men with fire extinguishers and took them off the stage in stretchers, with the band resuming its show a few minutes later.

A spokesperson for the promoter said the stunt was "all part of the show," and in fact METALLICA has staged this type of "accident" before during its 1997 tour, on which the show ended with the stage seemingly collapsing around the band as one crew member caught fire and another dangled upside down from the fallen lighting rig. The effect was caught on the band's "Cunning Stunts" DVD.

The show on July 28 marked the debut of a new 140-foot-by-50-foot stage that features "colossal components and striking visual elements spanning METALLICA's entire 30-year career," meaning that the "accident" stunt could be back for an encore.

At a press conference before the show, frontman James Hetfield said that the band was focused on "staying alive" while performing alongside the "dangerous elements" of the new production, with bassist Robert Trujillo adding, "Like James said, it's very dangerous — we've got stuff flying every which way."

A post in the "Tour Journal" section of METALLICA's official web site related that "shit really hit the fan (during 'Enter Sandman' with) loud bangs, random fireworks, falling towers, falling spot light guy, falling scaffolding, guy was caught on fire . . . then a complete blackout."

Following its Mexico City stand, METALLICA next plays the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco and then two shows in late August in Vancouver, which will be filmed for the band's upcoming 3D movie.

James getting creampied would have been more appropriate for his birthday.

Metallica may not make great albums anymore, but they still bring it live.

And their setlists are filled with the Black album and before.

Still, I wish they'd drop Sad But True, Nothing Else Matters and Seek and Destroy.

I really wish they play Four Horsemen at a show that I attend.

...of course, Id just have it full of everything up until Justice, but still, that would have been a good show to be at.

...yes,yes, go ahead and hate on Metallica, but remember : No one has taken metal to the masses like Metallica. .....except maybe Maiden.

True, but Metallica still gets the edge in that department since Maiden hasn't permeated the pop culture the way Metallica has. Thay are still a band with a purely metalhead following. Back in the 80's it was very close between the two bands for me, as to which my favorite as, but since then it's been clearly Maiden.

damn, did you guys hear Lars double bass during One. That was sweet, I hope he keeps it up (though I'm sure after their break from touring his skills will dramatically regress)

I've been a metallica fan ever since they blew off REM and loosing my religion in le combat des clips on musique plus (same as mtv but in quebec) with one. The guitars, the attitude... everthing was so grim and black. It was metallica in 1989 and that was the metallica I grew to like.

But, I must admit everone needs to change. People can't go on like that for ever with all the drugs, the boose and bitter towards the world.

They changed and we can't do anything for that. We have the choice to love them or hate them. We have the choice to buy the records and go to concerts or to bitch about the fact that they are not the puppets or AJFA band. One thing is for sure, they will not change for us and i respect that.

I find it kind of nice that they see life and live life differently. They have families, their attitudes changed and the music 2. I guess it's called evolution.

If you ask me if i prefer old metallica or the new metallica... well I can say that I love metallica but not everything... But who am I to judge them... ??

become more like Kiss every tour. All about the explosions and pyro and lights, and no one getting excited until they play one of their old songs. I guess you have to keep increasing the visual stimulus when you can't play your old shit well anymore and your newer songs all suck.

That bukkake on James sure is appropriate, as I look at the Load album cover again.

For all the shit people have talked about Metallica over the years, myself included, you've got to hand it to them. 49 years old and still out there touring and making music. That's amazing. God bless em man. Instead of bashing them for everything they do, appreciate them while they're here. And never forget how they influenced you, and what they did for music. They're still here to honor their fans, and play music because that's what they love to do. And for that they deserve our utmost love and respect, which I certainly give. Thank you for everything Metallica. Happy Birthday James.

belated birthday, James. You and Slayer have always been and always will be cherished times remembered. From headbanging and wearing out my Kill 'em All cassette, to always buying your shit on the first day (LULU and St. Anger, not-withstanding) you guys have always made my life happier. I hope you had a great day, man. You weren't spoiled rotten growing up and have well deserved success, imo. I hope you live many more years and keep giving us heavy, uncommercial metal up the masses asses.

This is a longstanding tradition since Metallica got "sober".
They do this instead of getting him a stripper/hooker.

We are now living in the world of Metallica - Rated G
