BLACK SABBATH Are 'All Just Normal, Nice Guys,' Says Keyboardist ADAM WAKEMAN - Aug. 10, 2012
MTV Hive conducted an interview with keyboardist Adam Wakeman (BLACK SABBATH, OZZY OSBOURNE, HEADSPACE) prior to BLACK SABBATH's August 3 headlining concert at this year's edition of the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, Illinois. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

You're several decades younger than the guys in BLACK SABBATH. What's hanging out with them on tour like?

This year, we've only done two shows with SABBATH. It's such a different ballgame to being in Ozzy's band. Ozzy's band is a band, and it's all great. With SABBATH, I'm kind of like the hired keyboard player, shoved off the stage. So it's a bit of a weird one with me, especially after being in Ozzy's band for my ninth year now. The first two years were actually spent with SABBATH. So I was really young, then. But it's great — they're a really nice bunch of guys. When I first started doing it in 2003, when [drummer] Bill Ward was doing it, as well, we rehearsed for a month in the studio in White Horse, and we'd all go out for walks and stuff. Spending time with them — I was surprised at how little they spoke about music.

What are they like to hang out with? Is Ozzy eating crisp apple salads, watching the History Channel, and going to bed at ten o'clock these days?

He's obviously left the curtains open! That's exactly what happens. He's mad on the history and documentary channels. With the SABBATH guys, it's been a while since we've all been touring together. I think with the Ozzy thing, it's slightly different — we tend to fly everywhere, so we're all on the same plane, and there's a good camaraderie. With this, Tony's [Iommi, guitar] coming from England, I'm coming from England, Geezer's coming from Los Angeles, Ozzy's coming from England or L.A. — their schedules are ridiculous. We try to get together for a dinner when we can. I haven't seen Tony since we played Download on the 10th of June. But Geezer's been on the Ozzy tour, so I've spent a lot of time with him. They're all just normal, nice guys. Like the old-school rock royalty that they are. I've played with quite a few pop artists in my time, and very few of them come close to the kind of class of the older generation.

There has to be more to the story. The more I wonder why there is really nothing on youtube of Bill Ward in the last decade and the more I watch footage of him with Sabbath when Martin was the vocalist, the more I understand it. Perhaps he just doesnt have the chops to carry it off well now.. His playing was horrid on that pro-shot video with Tony Martin and that was a LONG time ago too! That "could" explain the lack of communication to a degree. It would be tough to communicate that if the other guys think or even know it's his playing.

he's right. they probably are just normal, nice guys. i'm a long time fan but i do like to bitch about some of their decisions or tmake fun of them on this website sometimes. it's so hard not to, you know? but if we were in a room with them, they'd probably be nice, normal guys and we'd all probably be polite to them and honored to be in their presence.

i'm... i'm resigning from blabbermouth.

Shut up and get back behind the stage, no one cares about the keyboard player. I don't think Sharon is paying you $75.00 bucks a show to talk.

You think she pays that much for the hired help? Oh he has been employed for 9 years now, I guess he's been getting cost of living adjustments.

with a pretty severe inability to communicate well if you take what the majority of their various ex-bandmates have had to say (Dio, Martin, Nicholls, Ward, Gillen and on and on).

I love the sound but not so much the melodrama. I doubt Wakeman is allowed to write on the album either (Nicholls contributed much during his time in the band).

Well, they are British. Not known for communication skills. And it's megalomania, not melodrama.

You mean those handfuls of dates in 94 in Brazil? Bill hadn't played in ages.

I saw Bill play in 99 with Sabbath at the Shark Tank and he was a-fucking-mazing. Also was the only Sab I'd never seen play live. Since I had a side view seat I could see him, Iommi and Nicholls play perfectly. So great.

That's the lineup I'd like to see again.

Perhaps you should change your name to San Diego Man? Kidding aside... you lucky bastard, that must have been a cool tour.

So even if Bill played great on the Born Again tour, which he wasn't on, that is 29 years ago when he was still at least chronologically a young man.

Hey I want to see Bill play with Sabbath again, even if they have to do something like the Moody Blues do and have another drummer onstage (or since this is Sabbath, behind the stage) doing the hard work while the original guy taps along gently to the beat. But Bill apparently has more pride than the Moody Blues drummer.

Free Bill Fuck!

One of my favorite stories, my pal was in New Jersey at Sam Ash where Heaven And Hell or it may have been just Tony did an instore signing. All the Iommi model guitars were bought to get signed by the customers and Iommi refused to sign guitars. Everyone returned the guitars to the store and the owner got fucked from all the BS of processing refunds and pissed off people. Guess Tony was worried about the 3 people who would sell it on ebay. Now that is abnormal And assholish

Well the 3 people that bought Iommi model guitars weren't paying attention because Iommi said all along he would only sign copies of his book.. Most people on book tours insist on this..

I agree it probably wouldn't be too big a deal for him to sign a couple of guitars..

The whole idea of autographs is ridiculous anyways..
