DEF LEPPARD Guitarist Interviewed On Florida's 98.7 THE GATER (Audio) - Aug. 10, 2012
On Thursday, August 9, DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen talked to the 98.7 The Gater radio station in West Palm Beach, Florida before kicking off the second leg of the "Rock Of Ages" tour with POISON and LITA FORD in Sunrise, Florida. Listen as Phil calls in from the beach and shares how Florida has been a key state in his life, from events including his wedding in West Palm Beach and how radio requests in south Florida helped launch "Pour Some Sugar On Me" back in 1987. Phil also mentions how "Hysteria"'s recent 25th anniversary might warrant adding some songs to the set lists on upcoming dates of the tour.

In a recent interview with MusicRadar.com, Collen spoke about recording "Hysteria", the multi-platinum album his band released 25 years ago. "I can remember being in the studio, what guitars we used … I think I remember what we ordered for lunch on some days," he said.

Collen said the band's goal in the studio was to fulfill producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange's vision of making a hard rock version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller". "Mutt wanted to open us up to any kind of sound, make us like a hybrid in a way, and we thought that was really exciting," he explained. "A lot of rock albums can sound thin and reedy. But listen to hip-hop albums and R&B records — they sound huge! We found that we could get a lot of crossover appeal by making the songs big and open."

Attempting to follow-up the seven-times-platinum "Pyromania", DEF LEPPARD were hard at work recording their next album by Christmas of 1984 when a tragic car accident would leave drummer Rick Allen without his left arm. It would be another two and a half years of intense work in the studio before "Hysteria" would finally be released to a long-awaiting fanbase.

"[When I heard the finished product for the first time], I thought, 'If it sells one copy and my mom's the only one that buys it, I'll be happy,'" Collen said. "It was the best thing I'd ever heard. I was completely satisfied. I was so proud and pleased. I can still listen to it and feel the same way."

I understand what they were going for, Mutt has always had a vision of what he believed DL should sound like. I prefer the sound of their first 3 albums to Hysteria. I think they would have had the success they had if they would have just stayed the same path musically. I worked their first 3 tours of America. I loved their live sound, but I think Phil was a huge change in the DL sound. Miss the orginal line up...

The Hysteria tour was a heart breaking time for me. I was a huge fan of Steve Clark and watching this man decline while on tour was tough. Everytime I brought up his health and problems... "Don't rock the boat. The band is hotter than ever. The boys would have to stop the tour." I wish I would have rocked the boat. Steve was battling his demons and having trouble living up to his Dad's expectations. He was the most misserable rock star I ever meet.

RIP Steve Clark

I could always tell by looking at the guy that he always seemed miserable and I know he was a fan of the drink, but could you elaborate more on this "father's expectations" business?

I've never heard this angle of the story...

Well said. That's true: Phil's first writing with the band was 'Hysteria'. The album's sound is a big leap from 'Pyromania', as that one was to 'High 'N' Dry'.

The thing that always annoyed me about 'Hysteria' are those melting-sounding, Gary Glitter/T.Rex sort of backing on vocals that almost sound brain-damaged or just odd.. The drum machines and the overall sheen of he album: it was a long, expensive battle to make the album they made. A long period of inactivity at the time..

I miss Steve too. People like him and Kurt Cobain: I always wished they could buy themselves the time and focus to get away from anyone toxic so they could get healthy. Steve's jealous father.. How can anyone seriously hate on their own child for doing what you hope they eventually will, which is becoming a better success at life than your own? R.I.P. Clarky. As long as there is music, you will live on forever. Peace.

I've seen few of your posts and you seem to have worked with a lot of bands. In what capacity did you work with all of these groups? What was your gig?

I started off my career working in management of a record company. I was responsible for helping marketing bands, finding new talent, radio time, and trying to secure tour slots, etc... Then I worked for several major promoters and then as a consultant. Then moved on to my current professional career.

It some times pays to be an older rocker. The industry has change so much, but not always for the best interest of the bands. It is a job for younger men... I traveled all the time.

I always tell people becareful of meeting your idiols. They might after you meet them.

Def Leppard put out 3 great hard rock records, and 2 decent bubble-gum pop rock records:

On Through the Night
High 'N Dry
Pyromania

= 3 great, hard rock records.

Hysteria
Adrenalize

= 2 decent bubble-gum pop rock records.

Slang

= 1 piss poor attempt at grunge

Euphoria
X
Yeah!
Songs from the Sparkle Lounge

= garbage

Def Leppard haven't put out a decent record in 20 years.

I agree about the first three albums, but I completely disagree about Adrenalize, Slang, and Euphoria.

Play all of those live, and kick That chick on guitar to the curb.
