'Behind The Suit And Tie' Record-Industry Documentary: New Trailer Posted Online - Aug. 10, 2012
Five years in the making, the recording industry documentary "Behind The Suit And Tie" appears to finally be on the brink of release. A new six-minute extended trailer can be viewed below.

Due in November via BigCartel.com, "Behind The Suit And Tie" "pulls no punches and features some of the prime movers in the heavy metal industry drawing back the veil of mystique surrounding the music business and addressing tough questions about the industry itself, how it's run and where labels see their role in a digital future," according to a press release.

Through a series of interviews with players from both indie and major labels, "Behind The Suit And Tie" "will showcase the truth of how the music industry is being affected by the downward spiral of CD sales and how new and up and coming artists must learn to adjust to changing times."

Commented creator/producer Robert Bolger: "Unlike most music documentaries more musician-focused approach, 'Behind The Suit And Tie' will spend more time with the people behind the labels.

The film will contain insight from:

* Carl Severson (Good Fight Entertainment, formerly of Ferret Music)
* Paul Conroy (Good Fight Entertainment, formerly of Ferret Music)
* Jason Lekberg (Eleven Seven, formerly of Epic Records)
* Burt Goldstein (MVD), previous (Big Daddy distribution)
* Eddie Trunk (VH1 Classic's "That Metal Show")
* Rob "Blasko" Nicholson (OZZY OSBOURNE)
* Adam Watson (Plastic Head Distribution)
* Bryan Mechutan (Demolition Records)
* Alan Becker (SONY RED, Distribution)
* Missi Callazzo (MegaForce Records)
* Ray Harkins (Century Media Records)
* Brian Slagel (Metal Blade Records)
* Doug Keogh (Roadrunner Records)
* Ed Rivadavia (RCA Music Group)
* Al Dawson (Earache Records)
* Pat Egan (Relapse Records)
* David Ellefson (MEGADETH)
* Gary Susalis (Music Choice)
* Ged Cook (Demolition Records)
* Ralph Graupner (Indevent Music)
* Lee Barrett (Ascendance Records)
* Ryan Forster (Moshpit Tragedy)

Sad thing is any clips filmed five years ago by the people above is now completely irrelevant. More advice from the experts at Roadrunner Records, anyone?

Having spent 20 years in the music industry before moving on to the next phase in my life, I will be interested in this.

I have been asked to write a book about the industry by a publisher about my time and what I wittnessed. I don't think this film will even touch the surface of how the industry works. For example:

When VH was starting to become huge... it was openly discussed replacing Mr. Roth.

You can have a number 1 album and still owe the label millions... look at VH and QR.

How the label pushes you to sound and look. Dokken was heavily pressured into their look for "Under Lock and Key". Warrant being told "there is no single on this album"... Cherry Pie.

One story to this day just still blows my mind. Their was a killer band out of Dayton, Ohio. They were signed to a record deal. After the band cut 9 songs they were told to changed their band line up because 2 of the 5 members did not look like "rockers". The band refused and were dropped by the label. They the band was billed for studio time, the dinner they label paid for when signing them, etc... The only label agreed to "forgive" the debt if the members David Schneider and Brad Papadopulos released all credit to the songs that were recorded. The label had several different bands record and take credit for the songs.

The screwing of artists has been going on since day one and will never change. You need many things to come together to have a chance at making it in the business. I find the process fascinating. 99.9% of all bands have a snowball chance in hell of making it. For whatever reason can you imagine how many bands we'll never hear. Depressing. Look forward to the documentary. If you want to read a good book on the biz, check into a book called Kiss and Sell, The Making of a Supergroup. It's a book by Mr Chris Lendt who was a major player in the management team of Kiss. A must read for any fan of Kiss. You won't put it down.

yep, they did this in Denton, TX many years ago. Reps show up eager to sign. wanted a band called Ten Hands; they wouldn't compromise. So they signed another local band, the New Bohemians, which they re-named: Eddie Brickell and New Bohemians. even got their drummer replaced. they got a hit and some good sales, but they destroyed the unity of the band.

Guess which band is still around? yep.

The only advices you can give to bands nowadays is this: learn to record, mix and master your music yourself. There's tons of documentation on this online, with time, small bands will learn how to craft a solid album and be totally independent from labels. Give your music away for free on your website. Bands can now build their own website and build a fanbase themselves with the social networks. I see absolutely no reason why any band would want to be signed with a label today. The biggest band all started hungry and did it for the love of music. That's the way it should be. When bands get big, they start to suck. Doing music should be a hobby, a serious hobby, but still a hobby. Not a job.

No, you grow the fuck up man! Hundreds of new bands form every damn day. If you think you can eventually be the next lamb of god, you're delusional. Kid should get educateged first, then get a real career and instead of wasting their time in their off-time watching tv, texting or playing video games, get a real serious hobby; making music. If you believe most little nobody bands should aim for their dream, I'd say they better invest into some lottery tickets, there's more chance of making it big.

Megadeth are preparing new songs and you haven't reviewed "13", is this normal? What's the matter?
