DEF LEPPARD's PHIL COLLEN: 'There's An Integrity We've Got That A Lot Of Other Bands Haven't' - Aug. 9, 2012
In a recent interview with The Patriot-News, DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen was asked if the band was working on new material. "Yeah, some really cool, hard-rock stuff," he replied. "I don't know when that will be out. It's a matter of fitting in when we can record. I don't think we'll go into a studio. You can pretty much do it in a trailer. We've recorded a bunch of stuff while on tour. That might be the way to go ... to not take a whole block [of time] out and say, 'We're going to record for a year.' That's the way the industry's gone. It's more singles-based. You don't have to put an album out, you can put a song out here and there."

Asked if he thinks a band like DEF LEPPARD could make it big today, Phil said, "No, definitely not. The times have changed. It was a time and a place and you have to be aware of that. The fact that we're out there still touring and writing new music is fascinating to me in this environment. I think we're really blessed, actually."

On the topic of why he thinks DEF LEPPARD is one of the few bands from the '80s that have a large, devoted fan base, Phil said, "There's an integrity we've got that a lot of other bands haven't. They go away after awhile, and we've never stopped. We do new songs. Writing new material is the lifeblood. We are real, we walk it and talk it. The fact that we've known each other for so long and gone through so many experiences, good and bad, it keeps us very tight."

Regarding the secret to keeping a band together, Collen said, "We're from a working-class background in England. I've known lots of bands and they're weak in the way they approach things — they get so upset over the slightest little thing. I think there's something about [our background] that keeps you going. The things that make other bands split up don't even register with us."

On the topic of why he thinks DEF LEPPARD is one of the few bands from the '80s that have a large, devoted fan base.....because they put out a couple great albums right before I joined the band.

The integrity to refuse to release a record that the fans who made you rich an famous would actually buy or listen to??? Turning your back on cool catchy hard rock for bland pop and ballads? Not one good rock record since adrenalize (and that was average). Integrity...sure. And dont tell me sparkle lounge was good...I almost threw it out the window driving down the highway.

Def Lep was always one of my faves for years. There not holding up for me like I was hoping. There is still time DL for some of us older fans. I have played the Radioactive disc for friends of mine who were not into Def Lep and most of them were very impressed. All Lep has to worry about is the hardcore fans that have been with them since the beginning. The pop fans aren't going anywhere. More High n Dry and Radioactive type material.

Integrity? Like bringing in boy band writers for your X cd? Gimme a break! Def Lep died with Steve Clark! R.I.P. to both.

Well said. Steve was the heart and soul of that band. He never would have made another "sell-out' record. And they did die when he passed.

The thing is, is that Steve Clark naturally wrote very catchy guitar riffs and lines that have the appeal of being commercial (memorable melodies), but with the added texture of guitars making it rock and roll. It's unfortunate that he's not around anymore. He always was my favorite member of Def Leppard. Steve Clark was the integrity in a lot of ways. It's just not the same musically. Vivian Campbell and Phil Collen are a different team than Steve and Phil. Songwriting-wise, a massive chunk of magic went with Steve Clark's passing. I wish for Def Leppard to find some good songwriting mojo again. You are still missed, Clarky. Always will be the coolest cat in Def Leppard.

Your type of integrity is easy to maintain when every album since Pyromania has been pop rock and top 40 friendly in sound.

They fired Pete Willis for being a drunk, yet Steve Clark literally drank himself to death. Makes you wonder how much booze Willis can handle.

rycheskull you are correct. Sometimes I suffer from head up the ass syndrome like many others on this site. Funny thing is I knew that didn't look right. Oh well. Love that disc. Very Zep like. To Lep fans who have not heard Retroactive, check it out. You will be pleasantly surprised. Thanx rycheskull.

Did he join a new band? He surely can't be talking about Def Lep! After High and Dry, cred was gone. Long gone. Although they did make a legendary switch to the big time commerciality, that was fine, but cred Phil???

On your retroactive comment. Of course that was a cool unreleased song album as most of it (five songs or more) were Steve Clark leftovers and unfinished songs they finished up. That shows what Leppard were when they rocked and had a legend in the band. Nothing they wrote since even comes close since Clark was the heart and soul of the band.

Went to see Def Leppard last night with my 15 year old son. What a great show. All the haters on here, go post on the next Slayer record, or whomever you love to listen to sells 20 millions copies of a recored, or hell, even 10 million, then you can talk shit. Till then, stfu and bow down to legends. I'm like most people who thought it really sucked when Steve Clark died. He was stage presence. With his Gibson slung low, his high-stepping, long blond hair, he had the stage. He wrote some incredible riffs and music. No band can return to their glory years. Most have a peak of 7. They have endured and have written some great tunes since then. Listen to "Scar" on X. They will never go back to the HND sound or Pyro. It's not happening ever again, get over it. Last night they put on an incredible performance. Playing a variety of songs that encompassed their entire career. From HND, BOTH and HND(Saturday night), Switch 625 and Collen giving a shout out to his friend Steve Clark RIP. From Pyromania Foolin, Photograph and BGAG. Of course they played alot from the Masterpiece that was "HYsteria". Hell, it had 7 top 40 singles, unreal. Gods of War, Armageddon it, Hysteria, all of them were played. They did an acoustic set, Playing 5 tunes that are rarely played. What a GREAT time it was, a whole lot better than the last concert we went to which was Kiss and the Crue. I felt like I gotten my money's worth of entertainment last night. While Motley was pretty good, Kiss just went thru the motions it seemed. My son was blown away by just how good the band sounded and looked. True!

Also, when did rock become about legends???

Rock is supposed to young and fresh. Very few artists manage to keep the freshness in their music. DL is not one of those bands.

You don't become a legend by surviving. DL has sold millions of albums because old farts that still think they're cool, still buy their albums.
